one big theory is that the entirety of DHMIS is an in-universe children's TV show created by Red, Duck, and Yellow, aided by Yellow's dad. the dad, being a sharky businessman, manipulated the show's themes to fit his agenda, upsetting everyone, and using his son against his will. when Red literally pulls the plug on the operation, the new set you see at the end is a cheaper rendition of the one seen in episode one, and everyone is their favorite color as they stated back then. Red is blue, Duck is red, and Yellow is green. they're running the show their way now, even if on a tighter budget.
The whole show (this version of it anyway) is a cautionary tale about putting advertising in children's media. Red Guy had an idea for a wholesome children's show that no one believed in, so Roy (Yellow Guy's dad) offers to fund it, but in doing so he gets creative control, inserting product placements for his own merchandise and products and changing the content without Red Guy's knowledge (one of the most obvious examples is making the teacher in episode 4 a computer instead of a globe). Red leaving in episode 4 is because he realizes he can just make the show himself, and the phone calls in episode 5 are him trying to let his friends know about it. In this episode we see Roy finally learn the error of his ways when we see how negatively the show is affecting his son, so he shows Red how to pull the plug. The new version we see at the end is the independently produced version, with a much simpler set due to the lower budget. BUT they all get to be their favorite colours mentioned in episode 1.
The prevailing theory is that Don't Hug me I'm Scared is about how big studios ruin small dreams. The show was Red's idea. But the old man corrupted it making it into a horror and ruining everyone's lives.
The popular theory, as told by MatPat, is that the events of Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared were made by Red Guy. As you saw in his office scene, he wanted to do something creative, but everyone rejected him. Yellow Guy's dad Roy accepted it as long as his son could be involved (really, just an excuse to abuse and punish him). The show is made, the scary shit is the clashing of ideas between Red Guy and Roy, especially too much product placement of Roy's brand. Episode 4, Red Guy's head popping is a sign of him leaving. Episode 5 and 6 continue with Roy having full control to torment his son on the date that always pops up, June 19th, which in some years is Father's Day. When Red Guy finds himself back in the void of the show, he's trying to save Yellow despite Roy trying to get him to come back. Once he pulls the plug, the show starts over on a new day and all three characters are the favorite colors they said in the first episode. So now the show is back in the safe hands of Red Guy, now Blue Guy, and Green WILL be a creative color. A pretty solid Film Theory right there from MatPat.
@@The_Lord_Vader MatPat's theory was entirely focused on the RUclips series. If he made any about the TV series version, I missed those. If he made a theory video trying to connect the two versions, that would be interesting.
@@tokubrony9447 I don’t remember his theories on the “show” show, probably something about (SPOILERS) Some old grandma and her relationship with yellow guy, I really noticed yellow guy is a core character that has the world revolve around him. I feel the plots are way different currently at this point in time unless there are massive retcons or massive reworking that somehow connect the two shows.
Red guy's head was blown because he discovered that he could make the show without Roy. That's what the ending was, the show rebooted on RUclips/something similar with far lower budget but with more creativity
In the end, they all became their favorite colors from the first episode. The red guy became blue, the bird became red, and the yellow guy became green.
The fun thing about dhmis for me is that most things don't have concrete answers. And then you watch it again, watch theories, try to connect the dots, talk to the fandom where everyone puts down their theory, and every theory is valid. But the more you analize it, the more you realize the subtle messages, the heavy criticism towards some things on our world: In episode 1, many found it to be a metaphor of how people are taught they can only express themselves a certain way (throughout the episode, the notebook criticizes yellow guy's painting and even his favorite color), in episode 4 some people found it to be a criticism towards how we are alienated by the digital world and ignore everything else. If you analize them, each episode has at least 1 critique. The more you analize, more cleverly crafted jokes and critiques you can find. I really reccomend the tv show, the episodes are usually around 20 minutes long and the creepy stuff is more uncommon, however the episodes are full of ideas where you have to read between the lines and also just silly stuff that's random but also pretty funny. I really reccomend it, it's truly an experience I've never had before. You might have been frightened by the webseries but trust me, the tv show is really cool and has less scary things. Try reacting to episode one at least, so you can understand what I'm saying, you can decide if you'll keep reacting to the others after the first experience :] Love your videos! Hope you two liked watching the weird and spooky puppet show
I've always loved this series, both the RUclips and TV version, because they've always been a huge source of comfort for me. Hopefully you'll end up watching the TV series whenever you have time because it's so good:D
I've never seen anyone blame the yellow boy before. Fair interpretation since the people who wrote it didn't clarify anything. The correct interpretation is the one you've got. Sort of a thing that happens with absurdism. Surprised neither of you acknowledged the humor through any of this episode. There is a lot of humor interspersed throughout the whole series that I don't think gets enough love. I get that it can be easy to gloss over if you are trying to force the chaos to fit a certain view though. It's a fun series with a fun aesthetic. Not enough absurdist horror in the world. Hope y'all do the show too eventually.
Can't wait for your reactions to the tv show! It's a bit less fucked up(though has its gross moments)and more funny and a little more linear. I would very much request you react to it! Lol, love the song fitting so well as Red Guy switches the teachers. "You made me die!" Remember, the clock made them rot at a fast pace. Lol, love the song being cut off at the end. "What's your favorite idea?" In the end, I think it means the world is fixed. They became their favorite colors, there was less clutter in the place, and the notepad was more silly looking(it was the only one not shown as Red Guy flipped through the previous teachers this episode). But that's my interpretation.
Ok, I think the plot was that, the red guy was working in an office and was really bored. So he started to get an idea for a tv show, he went to the pub/club thing and no one liked it except "the yellow guys dad" who was a producer. He started to produce the show, but he also changed it a lot from the red buys vision so in the end he pulled the plug out and started to produce his own show, and you can see the lesser quality of the show, compared to the first episode, the background has less props and details. I think I watched Film Theorys series on the episodes or something, they explained it a lot better, but that's the gist of it.
My interpretation on this series is that it's a criticism on children education, both at school and at home, mixed with some other themes. Not on the mood to elaborate, sorry. But I like how everyone has their own unique interpretation for it (that's what defines art to me).
I've only ever watched in as a surreal weirdness. Never tried to make a story or theory or analyzing meaning and symbology for this. It's great seeing you guys pulling out the yarn and push pins.
There is a lot of discussion around this series, and the creators purposefully left these things open to interpretation. While, there does seem to be an overall narrative, this series seems to focus more on communicating its themes rather than laying out a single set story. A big one I found is "Trying to explain complex ideas by oversimplifying them". By taking out any nuance or ambiguity the original idea had, you end up confusing your audience more often than not, or giving them the wrong ideas.
You guys are not going to be able to know the full lore unless you watch the TV show. If you don’t watch the TV show, then you’ll basically never see the end of the lore
There's SO many things you can read into when it comes to this little RUclips Horror series. And it'd be so much fun if you watch the Official TV show, your reactions are so funny.
1:38 I-...No, that is his dad. We've seen them standing together in episode 2- Also, he only ate Duck after being tricked by the Health teachers, he did not eat Red Guy. Also also, I recommend checking out Film Theory's original theory on this show. It's what most of the fandom agrees makes the most sense.
If y’all ever need ideas for something you can watch together that’s not a high pressure show/series, watch the old Barbie movies. I highly recommend diamond castle (aka the sapphic Barbie movie) and the Fairytopia movies (mainly Magic of the rainbow, but it’s the third one so if you want full context watch the other two first
There is a teory that the yellow one, the red one and the duck are the same person but each one represent one part of his life and all the episodes are about him dealing with the trauma that his dad caused him
just so you know what all of this is and means is purposefully all up to interpretation, there's no right answer to what's going on. the interpretation I personally subscribe to is that it's about being autistic and being taught things in ways that don't work for you, Patricia Taxxon's interpretation
Are we sure the Dad isn't intervening, to help them escape? After all, his appearance to Big Red broke the spell so to speak, and got him to pull the plug.
I Think its importent to say that this is interbretiv art. So there is no true meaning. But by analising it and coming to your own conclusion and theory you are Being CREATIVE and i Think that is pretty cool!
Although a lot of the fanbase really likes the MatPat theory on this I much rather prefer the theory created by InsideAMind. Anyways it doesn't really matter, the creators intentionally left it vague with countless interpretations that can be made about it so don't go thinking your theories are any worse than the general publics!!
You guys should watch the TV show! It's way longer, but way less scary and has significantly more humor!
