    Bought my mx 518 in 2005. Been using it every day since.
    I always said that the only way I would replace this mouse would be for another mx 518.
    And now logitech answered my prayers.

      This mirrors my story exactly. I have also attained and used the Legendary for a couple months. Other than an issue with something on the underside of my example snagging and causing friction (and yes I have kept it thoroughly clean and tried to feel for the exact source and been unsuccessful) and an occasional two stage click feel to the left mouse button, which I may contact support about, it has come to feel just as good as my constant companion of the last 14 years.

      My MX 518 is close to 10 years now, and still works well, it's really a supremely reliable computer mouse. Only issue I have with it is that it's started to emit a low volume high frequency noise lately, probably a capacitor or something that's worn out.

    MX518 and the G400s are some of the best mice ever made, it's good to see Logitech releasing the Legend since I personally know a lot of people who were still sticking with the two prior versions.
    My MX518 lasted me damn near a decade, and the G400s was racking up in age, too. Now I got the Legend, I'm hoping to see it last as long as its grandchildren did, since it's still the same exact mouse, just with tiny upgrades

      Same - except I ordered a backup 518 about 8 years ago when one of the buttons on my original got a bit imperfect.
      But there's an important distinction, there were at least 2 separate production runs of the 518. It's most obvious on the underside, as the sticker is radically different. The later version has slightly firmer buttons and is a bit heavier. I thought my spare was a counterfeit, but images from Logitech and other sources showed that both were legitimate.

    Watching this with an original G500 laser right in front of me. Don't see myself changing anytime in the next few decades either.

    • @JETWTF
      @JETWTF 5 лет назад

      I hear you on the sensor location, The G500s I am using has the sensor there and it really does help, plus the DPI buttons are on the left side rather than scroll wheel being between them I never accidently adjust my DPI like I did often enough with an MX 518 to appreciate the buttons being moved. Then there's the weights that can be added to make the mouse heavier if you want and more buttons for the thumb.

A Corsair M65 and a Logitech G502 Proteus. I used the Corsair first and loved it but 6 months later the middle button died..just like the old Logitech. So got a free replacement but started using the G502. Still using it. Thank you my lovely wife. She passed Jan 3 2019 of this year and the world sucks now. Negative acceleration is for trackpoints, balls, and other non-mouse pointers btw

    • @ningcheng_shu
      @ningcheng_shu 5 лет назад

      You may find negative acceleration useful when you need to move your mouse quickly from the edge of the mouse pad to its center during a game. In that scenario most gamers would wish the cursor remain at its original position.

    • @BSEUNHIR
      @BSEUNHIR 5 лет назад +2

      @@ningcheng_shu Nah, that's where you pick up your mouse to avoid cursor movement. For that, you want a short lift-off distance.

    • @ningcheng_shu
      @ningcheng_shu 5 лет назад

      A short lift-off distance and a short landing distance are exactly the purpose of the negative acceleration. If set up correctly, the negative acceleration could help greatly in that scenario. Sure, you pick up your mouse to avoid cursor movement, but human hands don't work perfectly as a robot. When you pick up your mouse, and when the mouse lands on the mouse pad again, there will be a sudden jerk of mouse movement registered. Compared with your ordinary mouse move during the game, the jerk of mouse movement in that scenario is much faster and that's the time when the negative acceleration kicks in to help inhibit the resultant cursor move. Every gamer could tell you when you picked up your mouse from the edge of the mouse pad and put it back to the pad's center, bloody hell, the cursor moved, and you had to aim again! Say it again, it's the NEGATIVE acceleration not positive, to shorten what you called "lift-off distance".@@BSEUNHIR

    • @ningcheng_shu
      @ningcheng_shu 5 лет назад

      @@BSEUNHIRIf you don't understand or don't agree to what I am saying, that's ok. The best way to sort out the problem, is just turning on "negative acceleration" function of a capable mouse and see the difference during the game. If you are not a gamer, the "negative acceleration" is a complete rubbish and should be turned off, as it may increase the work load of your hand during the daily use of mouse.

    • @ningcheng_shu
      @ningcheng_shu 5 лет назад

      @@BSEUNHIRTo clear this out, what positive acceleration does, is when sudden movement of mouse detected, the driver will increase the distance a cursor moves, compared with the situation of no positive acceleration. Negative acceleration is just opposite to the positive acceleration-when sudden movement of mouse detected, the driver will reduce the distance a cursor travels. As not every Logitech mouse is capable of setting up negative acceleration whereas positive acceleration is ubiquitous, with a mouse without the negative acceleration function, the positive acceleration is often simply called “pointer acceleration” or just “acceleration”. Whether or not a mouse is negative-acceleration capable, has nothing to do with the hardware, I think. It just depends on whether the manufacturer bothers to write a suitable driver software for that function. So, if you don't game, you should always turn on the positive acceleration to save your hand. If you are a gamer and have a mouse capable of negative acceleration, you should tinker with setting up the negative acceleration to reduce the unwanted cursor move after you quickly lift your mouse up at the edge of the mouse pad and put it back at the pad's center, during a game. You might like it.

    This is pretty much the best review of this mouse showcasing the full history and specs of the old and new.
    Some things that were missed:
    The low poll rate of the original MX518 compared to modern USB mice capabilities.
    I believe the original MX518 was 125hz max. Whereas the newer ones are 1000hz
    Also the full range of DPI of the new and old one wasn't mentioned other than their "max" dpi.
    The Hero sensor does 100dpi lowest I believe. The original 518 is either 200 or 400. I don't recall. Gotta scrape it out my old parts bin to confirm.
    16k Dpi max on Hero. 1.6k Dpi max on old 518 sensor.
    The most important part was the straight horizontal line smoothing. It was indeed the bane if its existence. I recall that being a serious issue back in the CS 1.6 days.

    Also, max DPI settings is amazing for games where you are supposed to move something that is moving slow. I used my max DPI settings in BF Bad Company 2 whenever I drove a tank. I started gaming with the MX500 and continued upgrading through 510, 518, G400, 400S, and 5 which were awesome, but I honestly loved the G500/500S the most. I've now had both G502s and they're great too, but I'd for sure switch to a remake of the latter (with new tech).

    I've had THIS G400 for 5 years, I've honestly been getting worried about what I would do when it broke. Also my third sensitivity button is the return to default, it has those exact mouse gliders (I actually don't like them, they need to be taller and more rounded as the straight sides have caught on certain surfaces), I have a 5th DPI setting in the software, no angle snapping, and windows is creating my mouse acceleration to the best of my knowledge... So this sounds like a G400 with a new sensor to me. No other change I can think of, sweet!

There is something about these mid-range mice's no frills approach that I really appreciate.
