  • I've just spent a week in London so grabbed that opportunity to tweak the spec of my shed studio. I say tweak, we went from a stereo set up to a permanent 5.1 with a totally new camera system! So I thought it was high time to take you on another studio tour running through an inventory of divorceware and changes to my workflow.
    Is there anything you'd like me to focus in on specifically, if so please leave in the comments below.

    I came to your channel via LABS, and all those delightful freebies they supply on a regular basis. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour, but must confess that a lot of the gear you discussed has names and descriptions that went clear over my head. Not your fault, I'm not a trained sound engineer, just someone who fell under the spell of synthesisers, drum machines, samplers et al a long time ago(late 80's when I got a C64, it's MIDI controller keyboard, and the rudimentary internet), and have ended up with serious G.A.S over the last decade when I finally had the means to acquire things like a Yamaha D17, and on through Kawai, Novation, Korg, Roland, Akai, Alesis etc. I'm so glad your shed looks like it does, my converted garage has a similar vibe although most of my equipment and instruments are not exactly "pro" level. I hadn't played in bands until about 9yrs ago as I approached retirement from "thedayjob", and I was curious about what that would be like. Since then have spent time in a pro studio, rehearsal studios, played gigs in sheds, back gardens, clubs, pubs, theatres and festivals since, but get the most satisfaction from making my own music in my studio at home. So thankyou for the glimpse into your world

    Christian... you're not old! I'm 65 and I'm STILL NOT OLD!! My 'studio' looks nothing like that... no synths, no outboard, but I DO have an 'old' Mac Pro, 12 core, with a few drives and about 12 Spitfire libraries, along with others... and still working to move more into composition. Perhaps you could create a video about finding inspiration for those who are beginners or are not full time professionals. Thanks so much! You're very inspiring!

  • @SongwriterPlayer
    @SongwriterPlayer 2 года назад

    Christian, I agree that a recording studio is a living organism and my studio set-up is what I call a mini Abbey Road or mini Air studio. The studio has a mixing board, external old school effects and a separate studio/recording room. The battery in my mixing board died recently and I had to disconnect everything to get inside the board to replace a $8 battery. Once I had everything disconnect, I decided to do a complete revamp of everything and I literally torn the studio apart, fixing wiring issues and repositioned everything to optimize the space. This was my 4th revamp of my studio since 2006 when I set it up and probably not my last. Having been a studio, producer, recording engineer, musician and songwriter for well over 45 years and a student of the ever changing landscape of recording, revamping a studio is "old hat". With the ever changing music industry, workflows, approaches and new way of doing things, you have to be flexible to go with the flow. Love your channel and I appreciate all your videos. Great Job!

    Your studio is looking great, Christian! So interesting to see it develop through the lens of your RUclips videos. Nice placement of your Shallow Water pedal over in “Tape Corner”…. I might just be looking for clues to a puzzle that doesn’t exist, but it’s fun to spot its location in your recent videos. A sort of Where’s Waldo experience…. Where’s Shallow Water….

    So I looked at my little Presonus Studio 24c interface, my cheapo Swisstronic keyboard, middle range headphones, my 3 microphones (the Shure 57 being the most expensive in the collection) and my 24" monitor and wept. Then I remembered that my music has been played in approaching 40 countries and on over 40 radio stations (song of the week on our local station - Wonderful Costa Calida International!) and realised that, although I´ll never be rich or famous I am happy and I wouldn´t have the first idea how to switch most of that gear on, let alone cause it to do anything useful. But I love these "gear porn" videos so keep making them. As you say, you don´t need all that gear (luckily!) but it is lovely to look at someone who does have it and uses it to good effect. Oh, and Labs is the greatest gift to musicians ever so thank you Christian.

    I think it would be pretty fun for you to interview various Composers/ producers about their first recording experiences. The what, where, and how of their audio production beginnings. Any other anecdotes about the ups and downs of such a journey would go hand in hand with your statement that you don't need a studio like yours. Very much like your PortaStudio nostalgia. It all started somwhere.

    Very nice shed Christian. The Mac is truly a monster. And waaaay over my pay grade. Still running my Mac pro late 2012. 12-core/64GB ram. And it is a workhorse for me. Cubase Pro 10, Protools 11 and Digital Performer 10. About 5 years ago, I found the need to write and mix in 5.1. But mainly sound design and SFX. Some scoring. But now, as it turns out, engineers in mixing theaters in the states tend to only require 4.0 "Quad" to lay into their 5.1/7.1 Protools system. Occasionally, they do ask for a 4.1. But rarely. As to kit... I have been a VI junky since 2004. And a lot from your company. However, now I find I have too much kit. I don't remember where things are and it takes me so much time sorting out one instrument for a score. When I had less kit, I believe I was more creative. Had to work with what I had. And honestly, i think in some ways, it was better work. I also love the DynAudio monitors. Have 5 DB5a's MKII and a 12" sub.

    Hey Christian,
    I'm sure that you've taken care of it, but something I might have missed is fire suppression and detection for your gear. Apart from being a commercial trumpet player, I am an architect, and have had multiple clients that are renovating after an electrical fire. Of course insurance is good (but not covered if you use powerboards in Australia), and electrical breakers will trip on shorts, but often on tube gear it may burn out and catch fire but not trip electrical safety protections. Would hate for anything to happen to this lovely collection.

    Such a joyous journey through your studio. A true altarpiece. You asked about any ideas for tutorials; how about doing something on the integration of spitfire libraries and classical notation programs like Dorico or Sibelius. Reasonable workflows to use Spitfire in connection with conventional notation would be much appreciated.

    I pretty much live in a shed studio. It's a seperate garage/shed combo disconnected from the main house. I don't own the property but I stay here rent free. I had a window unit A/C and a gas heater for ages. Both were extremely noisy. Last year a mini-split was installed. I was going to pay for it, but the property owner insisted they cover it. All the noise from the mini split is outside, can barely hear it inside. The only audio problem I have now is the kennel across the alley.

    What a great tour! and an area I’ve been dying to hear about is the vintage corner because like your daughter said I’ve never seen you wonder over and have a widdle on those synths. One thing I would be interested to hear about, and whilst a potentially dull subject, some might be interested to understand is how all that gear is powered. As you’re in a nice garden room that appears external to the main dwelling I presume there must be some decent power connection to a consumer unit and then off to a load of sockets followed by connections to loads of 6 socket extensions leads? How is the mains ‘cleaned’ and how do you avoid mains hum etc. Some tips in this regard would be most appreciated as I only have a modest setup at home and with a couple of mixers, 3 computers, two sets of speakers a tv and 3 monitors competing with tape machines and finally the sexy stuff that makes the sound, I sound like Heinbach before I’ve even pressed a key 🤣
