Looking at the idealized art of fashion plates, nowadays you'd think 'there's no way people were actually shaped like that,' but then when you see a historical costumer in the whole getup and think 'huh, they actually kind of did look like that.' It's amazing what the tailoring (and surprisingly the shoe shape) can do to your silhouette.
@Sarah Bowmer yeah, the woes of fast fashion. Now people have to go on awful, injurious diets to physically make themselves look like how Photoshop tells them they should
Ive been tailoring historical man's clothing for 4 years, its amazing how clever these people were. We are SO arrogant that we have all the best ideas and the best tech. I will tell you - NOTHING is better for walking the dog in the fields at 6am than plus fours, and nothing I mean NOTHING is better for being out in a blizzard than a thick wool cape. And they were just as clever at silhouette illusions.
The skit at the end really made me appreciate how skilled the muppet performers have to be. The amount of emotion they're able to convey with body language alone is really impressive, considering how often the punchline of a joke is just a silent stare. You don't even notice how limited the facial expressions are until you have a person doing the same performance to compare to. The outfit looks great, the amount of dedication you gave to making this as accurate as possible (both historically and to the movie) is really awesome!
The gift of seeing a male 'fashion plate' of that Era dressing & in motion is such a treasure. I'm in awe of your flurry of incredible research & work! I'm also now in awe of the Muppet designers who hit that much accuracy with so few resources. 😮 This was such an edifying project on all fronts! Thank you so much. 🖤
I don't know if this is the right word to describe your talent, but your sewing skills are "fierce"; so many impeccable pieces created within ten weeks takes some real commitment.
This is a triumph. You literally made this look in human size from head to toe and each piece is a equally stunning as the next!! That is so badass! May I say you make a very dashing Mr. Dickens! The ending was the perfect scene to highlight all your hard work💙👏🏾🤣
Love the project and seeing you put it all together, but I'm going to miss seeing you in each other's videos. I hope you get to have frequent visits and share the shenanigans with us.
We filmed more videos together before the move, so there will be some over the next few months! She also knows all she needs to do is stand in the new house and say “wallpaper” three times for me to appear with brush and paste in hand!

Yeah honestly eight weeks for just one of the pieces would be realistic for me. I cant imagine doing that entire project plus all the research and film production in less than three months. Nicole is amazing.
With complex projects (sewing, renovations etc), I do a rough estimate for time and expense and then triple that. Shockingly enough, this often turns out to be quite accurate 😆
Can we all just stare in awe at the quality of work Nicole does? I mean, DAMN! She did all that in 10 weeks with that level of hand work? I hope you'll get real world use out of the red overcoat; because I bet you'll look striking in modern clothes with that on.
When you did the final pan up from the shoes, I may have expected an actual muppet instead of a human to be standing there. There are no words for how cool this turned out. And the hijinks at the end are hilarious!😂😂😂
I remember you started this 'quest' with the question 'when did male fashion became boring' (and a lot of stuff about Beau Brummel). Well, certainly not during Dickens' time! Wowsers! So delightfully *bright*! We tend to see the clothes of this period, if we see them at all, through the black and white 'lens' of magazine prints. Seeing them 'real life' is a revelation!
The overcoat is definitely my favorite piece in the whole outfit, but the color combo really gives it away as being Gonzo’s outfit, and you NAILED IT!!! I’m so happy you’ve shared this process with us.
I really loved the stories and research paired with the sewing. It gave me a more rounded vision of the 1840s and what it would have been like to live in that era. It's so fascinating! Thank you so much for all of your effort throughout this massive project! The results are top quality.
I’m so glad to see it completed !! This looks to good And the part where you said “I did that massive project, I can do anything” resonated with me, cause I’m in the middle of my master’s thesis, and this made me think “if she can do this, i can write this paper”. So thank you for the motivation
I can't express how much I love this at a deep level, the whole long project: a quick, Hmm maybe I should cosplay Gonzo, to deep dives into history, patterning, all your videos throughout which were so generous with details and facts and sewing, to your skit at the end. I mean, wow. F-ing wow. R-E-S-P-E-C-T
The blue gloves are the icing on the cake! I love that final nod to gonzo in such a costume logical manner! I am in awe of your skill, and i love that you share your journey, frustrations and all, with us. Thank you!
The detail you go into about the research process is so important. Most people seem to think knowledgeable people just "know" stuff and don't have to keep learning or researching. You rock
I've never seen any A Christmas Carol films, but the original book is one of my all time favourites. I have a stunningly illustrated hardback edition that my aunt gave me as a child that I read every Christmas Eve. All of this to say, despite having no connection to the Muppets film, the reveal of the entire ensemble made me a touch emotional. To see what the people in the book likely would have worn means so much. Thank you for all of your hard work on this, it made me tear up!
the outfit looks glorious. and I really apreciate the talking about what kept you going. I think it is very often underestimated that motivation and drive aren't just there. it is work (propably even a craft) to get them going and to keep them going. and exchanging our experiances with doing that can only help.
This is so amazing! I love everything about this project/ videos: MUPPETS, cosplay, historical reconstruction, fashion history, longish video length, shenanigans. Just perfect in everyway, love how it all turned out!
Firstly, amazing work. And that red coat looks amazing on you! (I wish I could pull off red anywhere near as well as you.) Also, Abby as Rizzo is just *chef's kiss*
I literally have no words exept: You made all that! In ten weeks! Including research! Which is just crazy, and so much of it is done by hand too, I'm in total awe.
Wish that you could feel the joy and awe I feel at watching the culmination of all your hard work, but it pales in comparison to the pride you must be feel after accomplishing so much! Of all the historical dress/sewing/costuming channels I love, I've found that your deep research into the history and your skill in recreating the garments are the things that feel my soul the most. My (not hand made) hat is off to you. Please give yourself a well deserved break, and know that someone in NJ gave you a standing ovation at the end of this video.
what a great project! i LOVE THE RED COAT!!! and with those red 1920s boots!!! omg! 😍the suspenders were great too! don't be hard on yourself and give yourself more time! this is just eye candy for us.
i am so jelly for that outfit!! you know what makes it work? everything! yes, literally everything. when you look at one or two of the pieces together, you think it can't possibly work. but when you see the whole ensemble together, it TOTALLY works!!
Wow! The finished ensemble looks amazing, you did a wonderful job both in sewing and in teaching us things we never would have known to ask. Loved the end scene, I am always up for some Abby-related shenanigans.
I am so glad to see the final look. Your updates were the bright spots in a very rough December and January. Thank you so much for bringing us with you on this journey.
Love seeing the final, although the extended bit before the face reveal made me think that a proper plague mask would have been an excellent way to bring Gonzo's distinctive face into a historical mode. But the layers do a lot. Did you check Project Gutenberg for books? I find they have more than Archive a lot of the time.
This whole project has genuinely cheered me up, from the concept to this grand finale - thanks :) on a side note: I cannot believe the amount of work you got done in this little time!
Nicole, seeing you challenge yourself and work with such care throughout this project has been a real gift to share with the community. Thank you! Watching the reveal brought on happy tears! Bravissimo!! You're an exceptional teacher and maker!
This is a classic example of Big risk High reward, and it more than paid off!!! You are absolutely brilliant. Not only entertaining but extremely knowledgeable!!!! Thank you for this amazing project!!!
Absolutely magical results, you are very justly proud of your accomplishments on this outfit! The little stinger with Abby is just the perfect button on this amazing endeavor--the Muppets are like Roger Rabbit, some things you can only do when it's funny! Congratulations again on the completion of this grand endeavor, excited to see what you have lined up in the new year!
This whole project had me speechless and seeing it all come together, knowing how much work you put in and how flawless it turned out has me convinced you’re a superhero! Congrats! Can’t wait to see what you do this year…after that well-deserved nap of course!
This entire ensemble is delightful and wonderous. You absolutely outdid yourself, head to toe. I myself am completely smitten with the orange plaid waistcoat and the overalls (forgive my lack of proper terminology), but everything is stunning! Watching you put it all on piece by piece had me transfixed. So proud of you for tackling it, for KILLING it, you are amazing.
This is so awesome!!! I didn't keep up with every part of this series very well, but seeing the final product is really impressive and hearing your sense of accomplishment and pride in your hard work was really touching!
That's always been my favorite scene in the movie. :) This project was momentous. You handled it incredibly well from a logistical standpoint. You accomplished things that were both amazing and beautiful. Also, you are completely believable as a Victorian gentleman/lady in traditionally men's dress getting ready for the day. Kudos all around. Can't wait to see what you do this year now that you have grown your confidence by these leaps and bounds. And those gloves are so neat!
I’m tipping my hat to you! OK, I would be if I wasn’t sitting here in pyjamas and was actually wearing a hat. I’m thoroughly convinced that there’s nothing you cannot do. Brava!
OOoohhh a belated Christmas present! I just laughed so much, not to mention the enjoyment this gave me! It was so satisfying and magical to see something, that I've seen as a kid and adult many times over, come alive. Nobody could've pulled this off as well as you have! Bravo, well done! The end "Chaos" was a masterpiece! Laughed so hard during my tea time!
I have been so invested in the outcome of the outfit, thank you for sharing all that you did. It all turned out beautifully, and I'm glad you were able to have some fun along the way too. AMAZING job.
This was just incredible and amazing, and such a perfect tribute to my favorite Christmas movie of all time. Your dedication and talent leaves me in awe!
It’s… so beautiful. Each piece is a joy to look at, and the whole is truly beautiful, no other word does this project justice. My mind boggles at the amount of work involved, and how breathtaking the final result is. Thank you for doing this and sharing the process with us, Nicole.
Your next goal should be to find manufacturers that still make all the period correct fabrics in the proper weights & the nessasary hardware to make any garment from anytime in the late 1700s forward. That would be an incredible resource for anyone who is as crazy about historical accuracy as you & your subscribers.
Amazing project, watching the whole thing come together was so much fun and such an awesome reveal! I’ve always been really fascinated by fashion history, but it’s mostly been confined to the 1960s. This series sent me on a search down the rabbit hole of the wonders of Victorian mens fashion and I loved every second of it!
I’m in my house giving you a standing ovation!! Never before have I had such a burning desire to dress like a muppet!! I think you’ve opened some kind of creative Pandora’s box for yourself and your fans. This really was a fabulous idea and the result is even better than anticipated. Thank you for taking us on this journey.
Sir! Ehm... Ma'am. How dare you be so charming? No really. This whole ensemble looks so great and the amount of work that went into it is just stunning. Awesome! And fun was had, that's perfect :)
I have loved watching this project, and I especially love the fact that you include the research at the start of each video. The combination of historical sewing content and research has quickly made you one of my all time favorite youtubers.
Wow. That is perhaps the best version of Gonzos outfit I have ever seen. You are a very skilful lady, and I love to hear about your research and following the process of what ever you make. I look forward to see what 2022 brings. I, myself is working on, for me a huge project. I’m making a woollen coat with silk/cotton mix linings - a project, I would not have the guts for, before I started watching yours, Abby’s and Bernadette’s videos. I humbly thank you all ❤️
Wow from beginning to end this project made me smile. Your dedication to finishing this project in the middle of the holiday season was chefs kiss. You should be very rightly proud of yourself and your work. I can't wait to see the great projects you have lined up for this years. Bravo!!!
That was epic! Seeing all the pieces going on and coming to life was amazing! You have earned a well deserved rest, and grateful and appreciative applause from historians cosplayers everywhere! 👏
I have enjoyed the content of many historical dress youtubers for years but Nicole, whom I subscribed to just recently, is the only one who actually made me *do* my own research and sewing. Thank you to this wonderful scholar and phenomenal catftsperson for all the inspiration! Game changer.
You proved it was quite possible many women had ability to dress as a man & it would be believable. So many exquisite pieces. Jim Henson would've been honored to see this.
And this is why hard timelines are for production companies. This was entertaining no matter the date. Season of wintertime was enough for me. Steller!
It looks amazing! I am thoroughly impressed with your skills at both research and construction. Thank you so much for sharing this. Also the Chaos at the end was fun as were the blue gloves as a nod to the blue character.
YES!!!! I have plans to make one, as I am *not* built like a man, but want the silhouette of one for cosplay; and I'm not quite sure how to navigate the difference between the corset part of a vest, and the vest irself (as the layout of the original historical pattern doesn't go into ANY detail).
It was reading the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mystery novels that really brought home to me how these layers and layers of clothing made sense because unless you were sitting/standing directly in front of a fire it was COLD and if you were/had been outdoors you were not just cold but WET -- even if you were in reasonable middle-class circumstances as opposed to the desperate poor. I worked in an unheated factory for several years (in North Carolina), and I think that historic clothing would have been much more comfortable than modern blobby sweats that got in my way. I *did* wear a wool skirt over my jeans for warmth.
This has been one of my favourite cosplays I've ever seen anyone do, well done and have a drink to celebrate the fruits of all your hard work... you really deserve it! 😆
Amazing!! This is such a work of art, you should be so proud. What will your twitch/stream schedule be, do you know yet? I love sewing alongside other people (mostly through youtube), and I'd like to put the time aside to sew with you!
Such an amazing project! You did really well! Also, thanks for mentioning your twitch channel! You've got a follow from me, I love doing crafts "with" other people
OMG! SO worth the wait!! Nicole, you are awesome. Your talents are so wide ranging it appears there's nothing you can't do when you set your mind to it. Brava!
I literally got chills when you finished dressing and we got to see the whole outfit. It looked so amazingly wearable, not like a costume, but like clothes. Just amazing! This whole series has been amazing!
This made me emotional! The cinematography while putting on each skillfully crafted piece was perfectly dramatic and magical simultaneously!!!! I love the workmanship side and the craft and the hand stitches, but now I also honor the research. You show the magic of the deep dive into discovery. Thank you for showing the research trail in this video, I’ve never done proper research and now the seed has been planted. Truly an amazing adventure you took us on! Thank you❤
That was amazing! I know it was based on a Muppet not a Museum, but it was better than a Museum. Getting to see it made, put on, and worn by a moving human was impressive. BTW fav line ever, "I'm throwing blind here!" Perfectly expresses my emotional state after the last 2+ years of quarantine!
I would seriously KILL for that overcoat to wear in day-to-day life. All the pieces are absolutely gorgeous, you're so talented and passionate about what you do! I loved coming on this journey with you. And the finale was such fun!
I hadn’t considered Pinterest as a research source like this. Thank you for sharing your research process and sources, it is so incredible to see such care and academic integrity on RUclips!

Sir! Ehm... Ma'am. How dare you be so charming?
No really. This whole ensemble looks so great and the amount of work that went into it is just stunning. Awesome!
And fun was had, that's perfect :)
This was brilliant! And I just saw the movie for the first time this Christmas Eve :D
You did an amazing job! That’s a ton of work for only ten weeks!! And it came out fantastic!!
Also LOL you and Abby!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💙💙💙💙💙
Absolutely stunning! All of the pieces are incredible. I am especially in love with the red coat. 🥰🥰
I have loved watching this project, and I especially love the fact that you include the research at the start of each video. The combination of historical sewing content and research has quickly made you one of my all time favorite youtubers.
The blue gloves are the perfect touch to remind us this is Gonzo without going full Gonzo.
Bravo!!!
I've enjoyed watching these videos so much! I've always love MCC and can now watch it with new appreciation for the costumes.
Looking dapper as heck! What an incredible project! I’ve really enjoyed watching the process. It was a ton of work, but the final result is worth it.
Steller!
Wait wait, the pose with the light pole is PERFECT. Also Abby as Rizzo is something I never would have guessed the world needed but CLEARLY IT DID
This was delightful - you put so much thought into this project, and so much HEART
This video is beautifully shot and edited. I'm so proud of you for finishing this project and I'm excited to see what you create in 2022 ❤
It looks amazing! I am thoroughly impressed with your skills at both research and construction. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Also the Chaos at the end was fun as were the blue gloves as a nod to the blue character.
Just an incredible job. We love your videos and appreciate all the research. Thank you so much!
This is amazing! While I know that I don't have your level of sewing skills, you give me hope that I can tackle my next big project. Thank you!!!!!
I'd love to see a 1830's man corset being done😍 (just an idea)
You've got a follow from me, I love doing crafts "with" other people
The whole outfit is amazing! You look splendid!
Why did the dressing up make me cry? I do not understand these tears but I feel immensely grateful
OMG THIS IS AMAZING!
You are incredible! I LOVE every part of this project! You and Abby (and Christy?) are hilarious! I love the blooper!
OMG! SO worth the wait!! Nicole, you are awesome. Your talents are so wide ranging it appears there's nothing you can't do when you set your mind to it. Brava!
I still think this entire ensemble has to make the rounds of Dickens festivals. It's awesome, in the truest sense of the word.
Thank you❤
The skit at the end was hysterical . The perfect way to end an awesome project 😻
...In other words, you're telling us you went absolutely GONZO on this project...?❤😂❤
loved this series, I learned so much and it's so amazing to see the pieces all together ! loved the little reenactment at the end :'DDD
The blue gloves are an EXCELLENT touch!
Stunning! Absolutely amazing that you managed this in such short time.
