I had been severely stressed and songs got stuck in my head 24/7. I didn’t understand what was happening until I watched a rerun of Star Trek Next Generation and Captain Picard tells someone that a song stuck in their head was due to stress. I looked into it and found out about ear worms. Now when I’m stressed and a song gets stuck I simply say to myself it’s just ear worms and I tell them to go away. It works!

Hello sir. I have a problem for a month and half. It started with intrusive thoughts about my partner (looks like ROCD) and then it continued with some other type of repetitive thoughts. I couldn't sleep and had panic attacks during nights. Now i sometimes think about those things, but it is not so scary as it used to be. But, one day this thought came into my mind 'what if my favourite songs become repetitive and obsessive?' since then i have a problem with stuck songs/jingles. The songs keep changing, i hear them all day long. It could be a song i listened lastly, a song I think of, a song from a movie, or a song that comes out of nowhere. Or when i read some words, it could trigger some song that includes that words etc. I did the test with hyper stimulation and it's very high. I also did a test for OCD and it looks like I have tendency for it. It's scary, because the music firstly helped me cope with intrusive thoughts, now it became an intrusive thought itself. What should I do?

One day, after struggling with focus, I suddenly found that the music I had listened to the night before kept repeating in my head, to the point that I even went to the emergency room. Earworms can persist as long as the body is hyperstimulated. One problem is that we typically don't realize how stressed the body has become because the increase can be so gradual that the effects of hyperstimulation feel "normal." So when symptoms appear, we don't understand why. Nevertheless, symptoms are a good indication of hyperstimulation. Eliminating hyperstimulation eliminates its symptoms, including earworms. We've seen this countless times, including my own. Or course, worrying about symptoms will cause them to persist since worry stresses the body. This is why containment is so important. It removes a common source of stress, causing symptoms to persist. Containment, stress reduction, rest, patience, and time. Should be job one when eliminating hyperstimulation and symptoms.

Back in 2017 my irrational health anxiety from Googling caused me to go into a drenching cold sweat anxiety attack while sitting at the computer. All of a sudden song stuck in my head and wouldn't leave no matter what! The next day out of frustration I managed to temporarily get rid of it by replacing the song with a song I liked in my head but it would always come back so I started playing a whole list of songs constantly to block out that one stupid song. Then every other song I would hear would stick for days till I had to start wearing earplugs into every store that played music. 7 years later I'm still doing this ritual in my head but only certain dumb songs stick now so I don't have to plug my ears anymore. The only real relief I ever get is when I watch TV and movies with my headphones on or have a conversation with others on the phone or at a gathering. It's always the dumbest songs that stick the longest

Hey been dealing with sensorimotor ocd where you are hyper aware of everything including your breathing, blinking, sounds, etc. My anxiety was bad dealing with that for a few months. Now that’s all behind me, but since then, I seem to aways have a song stuck in my head all day. Now for the last week or so, I’ve been so obsessed with it and trying to figure out how to stop this.
Now I did the same thing with the breathing ocd, I was just trying to figure out how to cure it. And what I realized is to not do anything. Just ignore it. And these ear worms seem to be the same thing. You are just hyper aware and constantly checking if you have a song stuck in your head. It seems like the more energy you put into it, the more it will come up.

Hello 😊 thank you for this clip, this really helped me understand what was going on! Annoyingly i started getting earworms which i believe is due to chronic stress over the years. It’s fascinating as i’m getting songs in my head that i didn’t even know i the knew the lyrics too. Does anyone else get songs they’ve not heard in a while rather than just what they heard that day /week? lt’s all the time but i can distract myself and zone out of it.
Sadly a few months after i then had my foot run over on a crossing by a car and i have to exercise to get my strength back in my leg. I feel quite stable and very positive but i can feel the stress in my body. I know gentle exercise is advised but i will need to do rehab which i’m a little concerned about. So this includes weights, swimming, cycling etc.
I’m gradually cutting out caffeine instead of going cold turkey as i’ve had bad withdrawal symptoms despite only having one cup a day. I meditate twice a day which i think has really helped me manage the symptoms. I’m sleeping well the majority of the time but i did have hypnic jerks when the earworms started. Is having the odd alcoholic drink for special occasions that bad?
I’m trying to find balance again and not cutting out everything which will make me feel depressed. Thank you again 😊

Ear Worms are almost always caused by chronic stress, which we call hyperstimulation. In this regard, hyperstimulation is chronic stress. As such, there is nothing to worry about. Reduce your stress and give your body time to recover. As it recovers, ear worms fade away. The less of a deal you make of ear worms, the less important they become, allowing them to fade away in time.

Thank you for making this video. I feel it is a very misunderstood symptom and you shed so much sense on it. I have a question I hope you can answer @anxietycentre I have had a myriad of symptoms due to hyperstimulation over the past months. For example, in November I started getting hypnic jerks really bad which caused insomnia. I got to a place where I began to accept the jerks, I retrained my brain that everything was okay and now I rarely get them. When I do, I have no fear about them. I just recognise I must be a bit anxious and take measures to calm down. Is it the same principle with earworms/stuck songs? If I accept that they are here, without judgement and just try focusing on other things will they eventually fade and disappear? I should say I am also taking measures to address my hyperstimulation in general - mindfulness etc. I have also taken out a month's membership in your recovery program. Just really want to check I am on the right track :)

Earworms is a common indication of hyperstimulation (chronic stress). It typically subsides as we reduce stress and give the body time to recover. Worrying and distressing about earworms will surely keep them going since worry and distress stress the body.

All the symptoms you mentioned are common for stress. So yes, if you reduce your stress and give your body time to recover, all your symptoms should subside, including returning to good sleep. Stress is a common cause of difficulty with sleep. But you have to be patient, recovering from hyperstimulation (chronic stress) can be slow. If you don't see results right away, that's typical.

In almost all cases of earworms (stuck songs), chronic stress (hyperstimulation) is the cause. Reversing hyperstimulation and giving the body ample time to recover should resolve the earworm. You can read more about earworms here:

I’ve been dealing with this curse for almost 3 years now. I believe it started randomly 3-4 weeks after I had a traumatic experience back in 2019
I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it?
The best way I can describe is it’s like having a radio in my head that plays 24/7.. I can change the music if I focus enough & the volume seems louder at times making it hard to concentrate also when I’m dealing with high stress/anxiety it becomes alot more persistent.. sounds strange but sometimes it’s music that doesn’t even exist it’s like my brain will simple sounds from other songs then mash it together.
I’ve learned to just ignore it overtime or try not to fixate on it but what actually helps me is listening to music to drown it out which overtime made my relationship with music a lot stronger Anyways I’ve tried SSRI Drugs hoping it would help & unfortunately it didn’t rlly make any difference.
I really hope that this goes away someday bc it can make it hard to think straight especially with the constant anxiety taking up space in my head.
Does anybody else go through this?

Lots of people have gotten rid of it. But stress reduction and not worrying about it are key. Stress reduction reduces the electrical activity in the brain, and not worrying allows the body to gear down from stress. It must be these two together so that stress can return to a healthy level.

It's not helpful to listen to the entire song, as you discovered. Since earworms are almost always caused by chronic stress, reducing stress and increasing rest will eliminate the earworm. Getting regular good sleep is helpful too. In the meantime, accept that it could linger and do your best to ignore it. It will end as your body recovers from stress. My son is 19 years old. He has been hearing classical music for the last two months. She is not known to him. He became obsessed with it and neglected school obligations. Now he is studying notes because he wants to write a composition (he used to go to music school) and he constantly plays the piano. He had epilepsy two years ago and then withdrew. Stress can create "earworms" and an interest in music can make them stronger. Musicians often have melodies in their heads, which they like to pursue. If he's very interested in music, this could be nothing more than him wanting to pursue his passion...which could be a good thing.

Earworms are typically a good indication of hyperstimulation (chronic stress). And once the body becomes hyperstimulated, it can cause earworms to persist. Out of curiosity, what is the degree of your hyperstimulation. You can get an approximate idea by taking our hyperstimulation test here:

You can also test to see if you have ADHD by taking our online test here:
