Have you ever been waiting in line at the grocery store, innocently perusing the magazine rack, when a song pops into your head? Not the whole song, but a fragment of it that plays and replays until you find yourself unloading the vegetables in time to the beat? Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis explores earworms - a cognitive phenomenon that plagues over 90% of people at least once a week.

I like earworms when they don't stay for too long. I had a part of a song stuck to my head for two weeks, and even though I like the song and that particular bit of it, I can tell you; having the same few notes repeating themselves in my head for two weeks was too much for me.

well it gets worse for me, my brain makes a mash up of the song i try to listen and the one that i want to unhear. Also, the lyrics got also mash up. I got a maximum of 4 songs combining into a mash up or a medley in my mind

I recently composed my own song, orchestrated every instrument and now perform it with my band, but it has been haunting me for weeks now. I listen to it on repeat in my head so much, and it has becoming a living nightmare trying to go to sleep recently.

same too i get songs stuck if i've listened to it multiple times before/actually like the song/is catchy and i hear it again. it doesn't work if i try (sometimes it does tho so idk) but it can replace other earworms.

Yeah, earworms usually occur when doing monotonous tasks, but one theory I think it's right is they also seem to occur when we anxious or stressed. So they act as a distraction from stress. BUT honestly, that's more stressful.

@@Grandpa_IQ it's better now, it's mostly caused by mind state and it takes a lot of distraction work to reprogram your brain into being normal again. Now i only have it in morning when i wake up, after 4 coffees and concentrating on other things it fades

i always get earworms, literally like 20-30 times a day, and sometimes simultaniously. but most of them are songs i haven't listened to in a while, such as a song i don't even know the name of because i heared it in the background of a few videos back in early 2020. but my favorite songs almost never get stuck in my head.

I basically have earworms about Queen, the 70's and 80's rock band. Like any song that hasn't received a 100 million views on RUclips basically ends up as earworms... Even songs I haven't listened to in years end up as earworms

The moment when i finally find a song which rhythm i had accidentally heard for a past few years without knowing its name is just exhilarating! I have to thank the earworm for keeping the tune stucks in my head so that i could find the whole song of it.
i usually just play the whole song in my head when i am at somewhere quiet and bored, like a lecture or event to entertain myself, the song doesn't get stuck in my head unless i want it to.
it's so bizarre to think that even people centuries ago suffered from this... like, what tunes got stuck in their heads?

Tiny Toons I am having earworm from last 4 months and it's very often for me . what I notice is it develops a form of anxiety . you notice a earworm you scared why it's happening . you start 2 think about it . and then earworm attacks your mind. btw it's also emotionally connected but it's rare .

In Germany there was an acapella "boyband" (but nothing like the kpop boybands) called "Wise Guys" and they wrote a song called "Ohwurm" which is German for
earworm. It was quite a catchy song and after a successful concert some guests sang it together on their way home in the subway. In the end everyone in the subway had this song as an earworm and they all sang along...

Thanks to this Ted-Ed video, now I have another song stuck in my head.
I have songs stuck in my head on a daily basis. Even now. But most of the time, they're not annoying. I actually welcome ear worms because I only try to listen to my favorite songs, and accept that my life will constantly have a soundtrack.
Edit: Usually when I'm falling asleep, they'll go away and come back the next morning. I can also have multiple songs stuck in my head at once. I think 3 is the highest number. But my head will play a catchy part of one song, then switch to another good part of a different song, then go back and forth, or sometimes at the same time. When that happens, it is a bit annoying.

Tbh i don't have earworms with songs i listen to repeatedly it happens sometimes but the earworms that are stuck for days and won't go are more from songs that i only listened to once and then i have to go and listen to it over and over cause it won't go away

a good tip for when an annoying song is stuck in your head - one of the main reasons i tend to remember things is if i haven't finished them. uncompleted tasks always keep me awake at night, so i tried to apply that same logic to music, and it works! well, most of the time anyway. if an annoying song is stuck in your head, you can try listening to the whole song, especially the ending, and hopefully your brain will remember that natural ending and it will close that open loop in your mind. let's just hope it's not one of those 80s songs that fades out forever...
I do that and the song just loops, glad I actually don't mind the earworm all that much.

Ha, I remember reading Twain's story about 'Punch, brothers, punch with care' in high school. Just six lines, and it got stuck in my own head back then. It's an interesting example showing how the earworm phenomenon isn't limited to the past century or so. I don't mind earworms much; they're only horrible when it's a song I already detest.
