The need for accurate and precise timekeeping once railways were established and timetables were required to stop trains from colliding is a fantastic historical story and well worth looking into. It also forced the need for standardized as opposed to local time to adjust those watches to.
Tell me about it. About 10 years ago I was in far eastern Siberia getting the train to Moscow on the Trans-Siberian railway after coming up from Mongolia. What I found out the day I caught the train was that all trains arrive and depart using Moscow time, which was like 5 time zones from where I was. It makes sense for the railway operators but is incredibly confusing for foreign passengers like I was! “What do you mean the 6am train to Moscow actually leaves at midday?” 😂

This is a good list. You can even do one on well known brands, but if you're got a specific watch, odds are good for being a watch geek e.g. Seiko Alpinist. The TGV talk was completely unnecessary, and was disappointing. I have seen a few people on groups mention some quality control issues with Squales. I don't know how prevalent that is, because it's just anecdotal. That never stopped most of us from buying Seiko though.
I think Seiko / Citizen are brands where a mall shopper could easily get a hold of without having a clue how deep the hole of horology descends. My dad has a Seiko essentials from Kohl’s for instance.
My first was a Citizen. I wanted the Nighthawk tho which was a few years old when I decided on it - lots of research, reading watch forums etc before I settled on it (I wanted a first watch I wouldn’t regret, and wasn’t disappointed, I still wear it from time to time) and I wanted to try it on so I had to track down a jeweller in the next town who actually stocked it. @Gigabitz - I'm with you; TGV got me to stumble on Teddy and I'm a watch enthusiast since that time. My two cents; Teddy's a class act and didn't mean anything negative about the "TGV Effect". Teddy's mention of the "TGV Effect" is a nod to TGV/Tristano and highlighting how influential he can be. Specifically regarding the Squale brand. Face it, it's an Italian watch ownership since the 1980s with solid Swiss movements and TGV's showcasing how proud he is by talking about Squale watches in many, many of his reviews ... simply b/c he can. And why not? TGV can't control if others get "tired" of hearing about Squale watches but it's an "effect" nonetheless. Teddy simply pointed that out.
I’ve heard that the phrase “on the ball” is a reference to Ball watches. Another interesting piece of Ohio horological history is the Deubner watch co in canton which was pretty much picked up and shipped to Russia to form Poljot. There is a Duebner ave in stark coin which I assume is related somehow… Great video!
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on interesting watches that are more accessible to those starting in the hobby. Braun for those who like Bauhaus design, Mido for those who want performance for the money, Mondaine for the Swiss railroad connection, etc.
Blancpain is a good choice. They do a watch that's unique to the watch world - the Chinese calendar watch. It covers the entire 60-year cycle (5-elements, 12-annual zodiac animals) of the Chinese calendar.
By far and away, the watch that has started the most conversations with watch nerds has been my Christopher Ward C65 SH21. It's anecdata but it definitely lines up with your video!
Terry, there's another channel that dissed Ball Watches; not so much for its quality (good watch); but Ball stabbed consumers who buy direct from Ball at MSRP prices; while Ball sells same watches at deep discount to the grey market retailers. Outta door, the consumer is already behind the 8th ball
bought a Christopher Ward in 2019 and the trident 38mm is just beautiful. And for 600m water resistant, this is a pro tool watch, at the same time so elegant and works perfectly with a suit too. Best choice i've made on a watch :))) The price goes up now too (but they change the hands which i hate).
@@paris2993 have had three over the journey and currently have a c60 trident. Solid, great design and comfortable pieces. Brilliant value for money and design IMO
2 integrated bracelet watches: pelton perseus. wempe iron walker , 3 hands and an internal rotating bezel diver( glasshute factory, or division, ). the last one probably wears large.
Thanks for sharing! I’m eyeing the Ball Fireman Enterprise these days and I’m happy to see Ball Watches made your list 😁 Also, thanks for your generosity, I’ll make sure to enter this contest … you never know, right?
Honestly I’d love to hear you give B&M more accreditation for what they’ve done in the watch world and seemingly always overlooked except when guys are speaking about Swiss watches that have a name and history. They’re great watches that are entry level luxury affordable, but provide much more for what you actually pay. It takes guys like you with a voice to get them the recognition I believe they deserve though. Great video though. I def have agreed with Oris and heard you speak highly of Hamilton as well. Many of these watches I agree with
FP Journe is a quintessential WIS brand--no one casually buys them I don't think. Good to include for Round 3. And I think Zenith probably needs to be in there as well since I don't think I've ever seen one in the wild that wasn't on an enthusiast wrist
Really enjoying Teddy’s videos, watching dozens this week! But likewise I didn’t get the TGV effect comment. If there’s a group of people who have soured to a brand because of another person that sounds like a them problem. TGV has pulled thousands into the hobby.
Hey Ted, I don't know why but for that last pick (in terms of a higher end luxury watch brand) I'd thought you'd go for Jaeger-LeCoultre (JLC) -the watchmaker's watchbrand. But again I like what you did there - giving other watch brands some time in the limelight. Blancpain was a great choice and I, like many of your viewers, appreciate your intentional thought process behind every decision you make for your videos. Keep up the great work!
Lange, FP Journe, you covered Grand Seiko last time. Those are some of the watches that tell me someone is into watches. I even put JLC in there a bit. “Your favorite watchmaker’s favorite watchmaker”
With antiquated technologies like watches, especially mechanical watches, this question doesn't really make sense. Watches are wearable art, mostly to be enjoyed by you and you alone. Whether it's the history of the company, the detail and complexity of the movement, the design of the bezels, collecting watches is extremely personal as a pursuit. You may be very satisfied with your OG Casio f91w ($10), or you could drop a million on a watch an astronaut wore to space. It's a choose your own adventure that shouldn't get dictated to you.
I would include Zodiac to this list. Not only obscure despite being part of the Fossil group, but also hard to get. Was on an AD's waitlist for 8 months to get a Super Seawolf.
All of these time pieces are $1,000+ price range. If you wish to consider watches below $1,000 Aristo (another German brand) are an option that use SW200 movements.
Great video. Love these mid brands. I am a huge fan of Ball and have 4 pieces. I am also a huge fan of CW. I have several of their watches as well. My favorite is the bronze with a blue face. Finally, Sqaule is an amazing dive watch. Love these too. Thanks for covering these brands. Nice everything isn't just the big ones.
It's hard to find Ball watches in the UK as most ADs don't carry them. Ever since an unfortunate incident in Thailand, I like to get my hands on a watch before I buy it. I have now found a small dealer who does, and have tried on a couple. One of the solid dive watches with 1000m WR and a basic Engineer had the most startling "lume" I have ever seen. The glass tubes lit the watch faces up like a Christmas tree. Move over Seiko. Ball lume is incredible.
The lume will be incredible for about 10years. Then ok for maybe another 10 but after that you will probably need to get the tubes swapped out for new ones (I think the half-life of tritium is around 12 years or so).
I think the model of a particular watch brand chosen indicates enthusiast choices. For example the higher end Seiko watches that compete money wise with well known Swiss brands shows someone who places build specifics and heritage above general brand awareness. For example the Marinemaster 300s and 62 Mas recreations.
I came across Christopher Ward a couple of years ago and it is still on my wish list to buy if I were to visit Europe. I have also seen a lot of negative comments mainly about how it is not worth to have a CW. This video kinda validates my desire of getting one lol.
Teddy is my favorite watch youtuber at the moment, and his online store is a cornucopia of cool lesser-known brands - but is this kind of video a bit too 'on-the-nose'?
I would also add any automatic Citizen watch. They are very hard to find in the US. You only see Eco-Drive models. My NY0040 is the only one I've ever seen in the wild.
Zenith. Undoubtedly. No one finds Zenith by coincidence. You find it because you were looking for it.

I just like watches that are good looking to me and their unique features. I bought a Ball for the tritium, a Citizen for the eco-drive, and a Seiko for the kinetic movement for example.
Im the same way. All good watches.
Ball is great! Glad you mentioned them!
Recently I bought a Ball Racer and it looks and feel quality plus a very distinct aesthetic at a competitive price and with the bonus of the gas lume you cant go wrong
Time to once again pick a junghans max bill and hope for the best. Also nice vid! Ball is always a top tier choice
By the "TGV Effect", do you mean the phenomenon by which he grows the watch community? The TGV effect got me to watch you.
Same here. TGV has been very influential in getting people interest in watches. For the pure love and appreciation of watches.
@@michaelriera6277 Exactly. If he wants to have a pop at anyone it should be Archie Luxury who is a complete scumbag.
There is a Duebner ave in stark coin which I assume is related somehow…
Great video!
Being from the area it would be interesting to learn more
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on interesting watches that are more accessible to those starting in the hobby.
Great subject matter Teddy, really enjoyed parts I &II.
If there is to be a part III maybe Zodiac and Ollech &Wajs could get a mention.
Recently picked up a Christopher Ward Sealander, loving it!
R these CW good?
Christopher Ward watches are a solid choice. I have three and about to add the C63. Best cases on the market.
@@paris2993 have had three over the journey and currently have a c60 trident. Solid, great design and comfortable pieces. Brilliant value for money and design IMO
I’ve been eyeing the C65 and the Ball
I suppose you got the black dial, how is it? It looks great but how does it feel and how is the accuracy? Thank you
love this video Teddy. Please keep on doing those videos.
2 integrated bracelet watches: pelton perseus. wempe iron walker , 3 hands and an internal rotating bezel diver( glasshute factory, or division, ). the last one probably wears large.
Thanks for sharing! I’m eyeing the Ball Fireman Enterprise these days and I’m happy to see Ball Watches made your list 😁
Also, thanks for your generosity, I’ll make sure to enter this contest … you never know, right?
Stop eyeballin' that Fireman and get one! You won't regret it! I got one about a year ago and it doesn't spend much time in the watchbox.
really love ball! love the tubed lume they do would love to own one one day!
Many of these watches I agree with
How about Favre-Leuba, one of the oldest names of the Swiss watch industry.
just picked up a damasko da44 and i am really impressed.....you hear all the reviews and they are all true. awesome brand
Again, amazing content...so well explained. Thanks, Teddy!
FP Journe is a quintessential WIS brand--no one casually buys them I don't think. Good to include for Round 3. And I think Zenith probably needs to be in there as well since I don't think I've ever seen one in the wild that wasn't on an enthusiast wrist
Zenith was in part 1 👍🏻
Really enjoying Teddy’s videos, watching dozens this week! But likewise I didn’t get the TGV effect comment. If there’s a group of people who have soured to a brand because of another person that sounds like a them problem. TGV has pulled thousands into the hobby.
@15:07 Blancpain is for "a person of culture." Teddy laughs.
Surprised to not see Oris on here. They have a rich history and are generally only known by watch people.
Don’t forget Fears watches, Robert Loomes (Loomes &Co) and R. W Smith, though you won’t see the last one out and about 😂
TGV effect. What does that mean?
I was wondering the same thing.
another honor mention, D.Dornblüth & Sohn
Lange, FP Journe, you covered Grand Seiko last time. Those are some of the watches that tell me someone is into watches. I even put JLC in there a bit. “Your favorite watchmaker’s favorite watchmaker”
Great video Teddy! I think Ball is a really good pull here!
I’d love to see a “best bang for your buck” list. What watches, and any price level, are going to give you the best value?
With antiquated technologies like watches, especially mechanical watches, this question doesn't really make sense. Watches are wearable art, mostly to be enjoyed by you and you alone. Whether it's the history of the company, the detail and complexity of the movement, the design of the bezels, collecting watches is extremely personal as a pursuit. You may be very satisfied with your OG Casio f91w ($10), or you could drop a million on a watch an astronaut wore to space. It's a choose your own adventure that shouldn't get dictated to you.
Teddy! Do you like the Hanhart 417ES?
I would include Zodiac to this list. Not only obscure despite being part of the Fossil group, but also hard to get. Was on an AD's waitlist for 8 months to get a Super Seawolf.
A Christopher ward is likely to be my next purchase. Been eyeing the c60 sapphire
Beautiful watch. I haven't pulled the trigger, but I absolutely love it.
I keep hearing great things about Ball.
All of these time pieces are $1,000+ price range. If you wish to consider watches below $1,000 Aristo (another German brand) are an option that use SW200 movements.
Great Video! I own a Muhle and Stowa, and yea, you could probably do German brands all day long for a video like this!
Which Muhle do you have? I got the Terrasport bronze and love it.
@@dosprompt5418 I have the Panova Blau. I just put it on a Milanese bracelet and it looks fantastic!
I think Monta is also a Watch Brand of the Enthusiast.
"There are possibilities that the person you might be approaching might not be a true watch enthusiast."
Looking at you, Rolex.
That Christopher Ward Super Compressor is fantastic! It had not been on my radar but it sure is now.
Oh boy Squale's new feature is TGVimtented brand cache.
Ernest Jones are the UK dealer for Ball. Check out their website.
I bought mine from Japan (used) and was hit with a hefty import duty but worth every penny, love my ball!
Awesome list. Tis "Blanc-pen",though...easy peasy
Teddy is my favorite watch youtuber at the moment, and his online store is a cornucopia of cool lesser-known brands - but is this kind of video a bit too 'on-the-nose'?
Yes it is
I would also add any automatic Citizen watch. They are very hard to find in the US. You only see Eco-Drive models. My NY0040 is the only one I've ever seen in the wild.
That Ball is absolutely beautiful 👌
Blancpain Fifty Fathoms my favorite watch 👌
Ball Trainmaster Standard Time on a leather strap is an absolute show stopper
