MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

I know nothing about renovation or building, but I've been enjoying your videos for a couple of years now. I love your enthusiasm and the before and afters, as well as how humble you are while learning and how excited you are to thank everybody who's helped you along the way. Love it! Can't wait to see this flip done!
Thanks a bunch Nina!!
Drywall has been a bigger step than I expected of this whole renovation, but we're making BIG progress and should have it a ll done next episode!! Thanks for the support and stay tuned!!
Love you, Uncle Mike!
Hey, Mike. That open room that you have created just inside the front door is starting to look fantastic. Thanks for taking us along on this refurbishing journey.
Thanks Eddie!!! Lots better without the wall dividing everything!
My husband and I remodeled our garage/kitchen/dining room down to the studs. Mudding/taping by novices is no joke! Watching you is giving me flashbacks 😂. Go for it bro!
If you have advice for Mike, please share it kindly without negativity. This is his 1st flip and doesn't have the experience that some of the more seasoned people have. He's doing a hell of a job and we need to support him with kindness. Let's go, Mike!!
It isn't really his first flip, he did his own home in Joshua tree
@Denver Now Well said👏🏼
@@denvernow7294 true, but it was still a very good renovation
Dude has 1.75M subscribers. This is RUclips, 100% certain he’s well aware of negative comments and fully capable of ignoring them. But thanks for the lecture white knight 😂
@@StupidInternetPeople Yeah, no reason not to be kind, though. Anytime, any place, anywhere. Give it a go.
The faceplate on the thermostat should come off, then you'll have access to the wires from the front.
I will watch this man do anything. Everything he does is a banger. Keep crushing it Mike, seriously!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 you are a fast learner! I saw the way you took all the tips from the first video!
Proud of you! Now it’s a game of rinse and repeat till perfection!
Love the jingle at the beginning!
I just watched your video and you are doing a great job. As for mistakes, if you don’t make a few mistakes you will not learn anything. You are doing great. Just keep going and the house will be finished. 😊😊😊😊
When using mesh tape, you need to use hot or fast setting mud you can get 90 or 120 min mud. Premixed mud loosens the adhesive on the mesh tape. Mesh tape on ceilings and walls can crack, I’ve made that mistake. Paper is less likely to crack which is why the pros tend to use it.
The fives tape website said that heavyweight mid is alright to use, but what you’re saying makes sense! I appreciate it!
I'm always waiting for a new upload and you never disappoint. I'm learning things I probably never would have otherwise. Keep up the great work. It looks fantastic!!!
Enjoying your videos, keep up the good work. You mentioned Vancouver Carpenter, he has a tip for torn drywall with exposed paper like you have in the halls there. There's a primer you should spray before applying any mud or paint to those torn sections.
The thermostat should be 2 pieces that you can snap apart. That should give you access to the wires. RUclips "wiring thermostat" 😉
Will do!! Thanks a lot 😂
1) You should have stapled the corner beads.
2) you dont need to paper or mesh tape corner beads. That is a ridiculously unnecessary step.
3) you dont use all purpose mud with mesh tape. Ita meant to be used with hot mud/quick set. 5/20/45/90 mud which has a chemical reaction to set in limited time.
4) you didnt thin down your mud at all. You dont use it right out of the box. Transfer to a bucket and spin it with water to the proper consistency.
5) all of you gappy areas or where you applied thick mud, should have been prefilled with quick setting mud first because it doesnt shrink.
6) you need to use the yellow box of mud for taping because it has more glue content.
7) corner beads with metal on them are inside and outside specific. The metal always goes on the inside.
8) if you have a joint against a textured ceiling you should have never used a corner bead there.
That should have been prefilled snd then flat taped with paper tape.
Craftsmanship like this is why I stay so busy. Lol
Your skills inspire me to make DIY stuff ur so inspiring keep it up!
Love the series, id recommend using a drywall counter sink bit so the screws don't go too deep. Once the screw breaks past the tape and into the actual drywall, they lose the strength. It looks like this happened with some of your screws. Keep up the great work!
seconded on that!!!
That’s really good to know!! I’ll check that out!
Yeah, I only mix my own hot mud now. But you're correct, it takes practice with regular mud to be able to work quickly with setting-type mud (hot mud). Keep it coming.
Love your background music! Great job on the corners.
you really did incorporate the help people gave on squaring out pieces of drywall too!! i'm glad to know for myself too. get that countersink bit next time for the next flip! i hope you don't have to hang anymore drywall here though
so glad you mentioned jeff at home renovision! great practical knowledge. Oklahoman here! yeet.
I like your metal corner tape idea! I think I'm going to try that.
Vancouver Carpenter is my goto for drywall help ❤ love your videos Mike.
That thermostat definitely comes off the wires. Just knowing that will help you figure out how, or you can google it! :) If you get a corner trowel, you'll never go back when it comes to inside corners... Great job so far!
I’ve seen the inside corner trowel and thought it was a gimmick until I did this project, I can see it would’ve really come in handy!
Get one of the cheap Philips head bits designed for drywall screws. An example is the DeWalt Phillips Drywall Screw Setter S2 Tool Steel 4 pc but many brands have them.
It’s coming along nicely. Good job Mike❤
The drywall is looking great so far! The metal backer is supposed to face the wall but I'm sure it won't hurt anything to leave it how you placed it. As someone who does drywall I can say that your knowledge is spot on so keep up the great work!
Whoops!! 😂😂😂 thanks Andrew!
This makes me wonder if those corners will fail since the compound won’t effectively stick to it… I woulda done it the same way thinking it would top the knife from cutting the paper hah. Ya live and ya learn
Ive veen digging this series after not seeing your channel since the bus renovation series
This is high quality content.
Mike it’s coming along really well so far. Keep up the great craftsmanship hard work my friend. Keep Making. God bless.
Thanks a lot Jared!!
you could duct tape an old pair of shoes to two buckets to walk around on when doing ceiling work.
Bravo, Mike! Doing is learning. 💪👍👏✨❤
For sure!! Thanks a bunch... prep and research is important , but nothing will teach you faster than making mistakes haha!
@@ModernBuilds 🙂👍
Love your content thanks for your enthusiasm and sharing the journey ❤
3:27 That is called a Drywall Sword! Just ask Bob Clagett
amazing. would love to see the project you have in mind
Great job, loving this series!
not a pro, but I would do 45s to reinforce the corners of the corner beads where the drywall/mud is most likely to crack.
Well done Mike!
Hi
Looks great. Love watching your videos
dont you guys have aquabeeds for the corners? super easy to use, and no messy glue
Nice
First step of DIY reno project… have parents by house for you
Ya
Is this some sort of challenge to not use a ladder?
Unintentionally 😂😂
@Modern Builds I think Mike is a tall man, correct?
What software or tools do you use for your budgeting and project planning?
The kitchen header wall uses corner beads not that rock piece and you don’t extend past that header like you did it’s all gonna crack ! DIY flip ?
Can I fix your intro song? 🤣 Haha
never seen drywall done so poorly
Nice Work. Just like a SUPER PRO.

👏👏💗
I know I’m a grammar Nazi, but there is no such thing as “Open Concept”. It’s a silly term used by agents that aren’t educated in architecture.
First.
Lol
Where R your corner beads ? See now you’re wanting top dollar for a Sheetrock mess! I am telling I buy property for a family member? I ask who did the work? The owner? He/ she a contractor? No sir ?
Thank you bye!
This is all totally wrong! The metal corner tape is for external corners, internal corners use same paper tape but no metal!! The metal tape goes on external corners with the metal against the wall, not shown😂😂 the compound is going to crack and flake off your internal corners as it’s onto the metal 😂😂😂
Great video, i love that metal backed tape it certainly helps with reno work as those corners are rarely square, i think you installed it wrong, im pretty sure the metal side goes toward the wall. It's been a while since i used it though. Keep up the good work
I really appreciate your honesty in addressing your happy accidents or mess ups.
Too many new DIY’ers quit trying bc projects don’t go as smoothly as the TikTok that inspired it.
🙏🏼
Next time just use dry wall mud to attach the plastic corner beads.
Tape the joints first, then apply the mud on the corners and apply the beads.
It will also act as the first coat on the beads.
I didn’t know you could do that!!! 🤯🤯
In order to do that they have to be "mud set beads" the trim tex ones are great
The author does like to from scratch, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
Loving the videos! I will say, make sure to watch your hands while using the nail gun. Its hard to remember not to hold your hand right against what you are nailing because it can be difficult to hold it securely. Its super fun to watch your skills grow!
I always enjoy watching you work, its super relaxing and informative.
Don't let your hot mud dry proud, I'm told it's harder to sand.
Dump the red mud pan, get a stainless steel, either welded corner or folded spot welded, little to no flex in the pan and easier to clean.
I'm not sure what you are planning for the hallway, but I think I would have taken care of those walls before putting on the corner bead. Also on the inside beads, I've found using a corner trowel for the first run, speeds things up.
I've never used the spray, like to see how it holds up in the long run. I use the corner bead with the tape attached, works for me.
Putting up the rock always makes me feel the project is coming to a close. Good feeling.
Looking really good. I’m enjoying this series! ❤
Handsome Dad🎉 is back🎉🎉💛🩵💛🩵💛 I'm loving this series
Stoked to see how this turns out. Love the channel and project results you've done through the years!
No advice, just here to say keep on keepin on Youngblood!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
You’re doing great.
Coming along great!
I'm not an expert, but whenever I do watch experts do mud work, they always have a twisted tea. Hope that helps.
Just a thought, invest in a drywall rasp it will be of help with cleaning up sheetrock edges. But for a first flip its looking good.
Aaaah! Good advice 🤙🏼🤙🏼
The corner tape is a lifesaver! I have used both normal tape and the inside corner tape and it’s sooooo much easier!
Yeah it really helped keep the corner straight and consistent!
I am missing you, are you ok. It’s a lot of work to do so you must be tired and need some rest. Anticipating more work in the future. Stay well!
fiberglass tape is a great alternative too
1:12 there’s no such thing as “open concept”.
lookin good
🌟
Always a good day when mike posts
I recommend you use a product for the inside corners it’s called straight flex it’s a plastic tape and since it’s plastic you don’t have to cover the whole tape with mud just the edges so you’ll get rally god corners
14:01 Oof, that's quite the difference in price, but I guess for a small(er) project it might be doable! And if you're not a regular user of it, if it helps to get a cleaner result it is definitely worth it imho!
loving this series, Mike!
That thermostat probably has a bracket that’s attached to the back that is removable. Once you separate it there’s usually some screws to remove the wires
Love those videos
love you man
YES YES YES
Did you put the "Enjoy this moment" wall vinyl up? Seems to line up when framing shots suspiciously too well :p
I didn’t put it up haha, just taking advantage of it before it gets painted over!
Great video, I might be flipping a house in a year and this is giving me the confidence to do so, thank you
That’s so awesome!!! If I can do it you can too!! 👍🏼👍🏼
At this rate and the lack of safety gear, episode 4 Mike ends up in the hospital. 😮
if you break through the paper when driving drywall screws you lose all the strength, they sell drywall driver bits that prevent that for a few dollars, or specialty drywall screw guns that work even better that let you dial in the depth perfectly
