I did find the original source for the supposedly scaffolded Dome of the Rock in Sebastian Münster's book. Why is the shape of the Dome so important? 🤔 Here is an interesting subject: In the koran we read repeatedly that mahomet is ONLY a messenger and a PLAIN warner whose ONLY job and responsibility is to transmit allah's message i.e. the koran. Despite that, at some point mahomet becomes a judge [4.65], and even gets to decide together with allah [33.36]. Yet, we do not know of any catalytic event(s) that justified muhammad's promotion from a messenger/warner to a judge and ultimately someone who literally decides together with allah. To make it clearer let us compare mahomet with Jacob. In Genesis 32 Jacob wrestles with God and survives. Consequently, God renames Jacob to Israel. Israel's status, role, and responsibilities are elevated. We find no such story or narrative in the koran - something that would justify and explain mahomet's transition from a plain messenger, first to a judge, and then to allah's equal [when deciding on matters of the ummah]. This is the brass tacks of the matter. I am certain you will do a much better job analyzing this matter. Cheers! 😊
That's a great observation. The reasons might be manyfold, it could just be a matter of availability. There could for example be detailed muslim accounts which we're not aware of in the West, at least not outside some select circles. Or maybe the Dome simply didn't have a particularly great importance to Islam at large back then. However, what is the consequence of a lack of Islamic sources combined with the prohibition for Christians to enter the Dome? Exactly, no attestation of the inscription. Particularly since Europeans only started to take an interest in Arabic culture and traditions long after the Crusades. So the lack of attestation is perfectly consistent with the generally accepted dating of the Dome.

Mel mixed up the Holy Sepulchre and the Dome of the Rock on those coins. The Dome of the Rock is the one with the round cupola on there, the Holy Sepulchre does not have a crescent moon but an opening up top. As for your question, there is certainly evidence for octagonal drums as well. Mainly in Europe but possibly also in the Middle East. But in the case of the Dome of the Rock, the evidence simply points the other way.

When conflicting evidence of the same type is thrown into the mix, it can descend into a my dad is bigger than your dad type of argument. Regardless either way when walls are reconstructed, any writing on them should be treated like any other text. Copies of copies. Unfortunately as far as I know, there are not enough ancient Islamic walls with text on them to compare.
