Exploring Brilliance and Evolution - The Shining Series Review
    Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
The "Shining" series of video games, developed primarily by Sega and known for its diverse range of genres within the role-playing game (RPG) spectrum, has etched a notable legacy in the gaming world since its inception. Spanning multiple consoles and generations, the series offers a fascinating journey through various gameplay styles, storytelling approaches, and graphical enhancements.
    Evolution of Gameplay and Genres:
One of the most remarkable aspects of the "Shining" series is its adaptability to different RPG subgenres. From traditional turn-based combat to tactical strategy and action RPGs, the series has demonstrated its versatility. This diversity ensures that each entry brings a fresh perspective, appealing to a broad spectrum of RPG enthusiasts.
The strategic turn-based combat of titles like "Shining Force" showcases the series' tactical prowess, with players orchestrating battles on grid-based maps. On the other hand, action RPGs like "Shining Soul" provide a faster-paced experience with real-time combat mechanics, catering to players who prefer a more dynamic approach. This willingness to experiment with gameplay mechanics is both a strength and a hallmark of the series.
    Storytelling and World-Building:
The narrative quality across the "Shining" series is a mixed bag. While some installments deliver immersive, emotionally charged tales that draw players into their worlds, others tend to prioritize gameplay mechanics over storytelling. "Shining Force II" and "Shining Tears" exemplify instances where the storytelling excels, offering engaging characters, intricate plotlines, and memorable moments.
    Visual and Audio Presentation:
The series' graphical evolution mirrors the advancements in gaming technology over the years. Early titles had a distinct pixel-art charm that has aged gracefully. With time, the transition to 3D visuals showcased the developers' commitment to modernizing the series, though this transformation was met with mixed reception among fans.
    Legacy and Reception:
The "Shining" series has amassed a dedicated fanbase over its decades-long existence. Some entries are considered classics within their respective genres, while others are regarded as missteps. The series' influence on RPG gaming cannot be denied, and it continues to inspire new titles and developers seeking to experiment with gameplay mechanics and storytelling approaches.
    Conclusion:
The "Shining" series embodies the spirit of evolution within the RPG genre. With a range of gameplay styles, narrative tones, and graphical advancements, it has delivered both memorable classics and slightly underwhelming entries. Its commitment to diversity, innovation, and experimentation makes it a noteworthy series for RPG enthusiasts. If you're a fan of RPGs and appreciate a series that evolves with the times while staying true to its roots, exploring the world of "Shining" games is a journey well worth taking.

Sonic Software Planning became Camelot Software Planning. They developed the GBA RPG Series Golden Sun or Mario Golf RPG and Mario Tennis. Their development and recent years has slowed down though. (Only 2 games on switch). That's the reason for the drop in quality of the Shining Games, the main developer is no longer working on it and also the classic games are no longer in the memories of the gaming audience. Sega thinks they have more success with action rpgs and the Otaku market. I think they are wrong though, classic SRPGs still sell if down right, which can be seen by Fire Emblems recent successes. Sega is missing out bringing a SF3 or SthA port or sequel.

It really saddens me that so many great Rpg franchises with turn based combat and/or tactical combat become real time action games over time. I hear a lot of people say that the genres have become outdated, which isn't a possibility. Genres can't become outdated, but peoples tastes can change and I have heard many people say this is due to the instant gratification people say they prefer these days.
Shining force, final fantasy & phantasy star as of now are nothing what they once were. I understand that things need to evolve over time as not become stale, but completely changing the gameplay, genre and appeal that what made itself so beloved in the first place baffles me beyond belief.

Tell that to the followers of Fire Emblem, they sure do enjoy the game still. EA said the same thing about single player games with good story being obsolete. Then they made That Jedi game and was one of their best sellers. With the state of gaming right now, I don't think any of these companies know what gamers actually want.

It was very fun, but I was sad to see that they don't make SF games in the tactical RPG style anymore. It's crazy to me-with how great Nintendo has done with the Fire Emblem series, you'd think these big companies would at least try to tap into that market with their own similar games, but FE remains without any major competitors. Incredible how one game (Awakening) just exploded in popularity and elevated a series that normally would've been extremely niche. Still... I'd love to see more effort from other companies.

Shining Force II is my favorite RPG ever made, It blends the complexity of an RPG with the simplicity of chess, bringing cute anime and classic strategy together. X-com did the same thing around the same time but removed the cutesy anime and replaced it with Mature comic-book style artwork, replaced magic & blacksmith weapons with Psionic powers & sci-fi weaponry, and made the game strategy warfare. Mario & rabbids is the closest thing we'll have in the modern day for tactical RPGs, but Shining Force II is the best. I still replay it over & over once a year with new characters & taking different promotion paths, which there are so many that most players will never play with the exact same combinations.

I see that many people miss the old “Shining Force” titles as much as I do. SF 2 was the favorite game of my childhood, so I found some similar series, that I want to share with you:
    - "Fire Emblem" Series. If you don't have Switch, "Three Houses" is emulated quite well on Yuzu. Many consider "Awakening" to be the best title in the series, but you need a powerful PC to emulate the 3DS on "Citra" emulator without lags. You can also try older titles "Path of Radiance" and "Radiant Dawn" on the Dolphin emulator.
    - "Dragon Quest" series, espesially the last title "Echoes of an Elusive Age". It's a traditional JRPG (without tactics), but the moment you run it, you immediately get a sense of the same atmosphere as in Shining Force 1-2. Story, characters, dialogues, music - everything here is reminiscent of SF! SF can be seen as a cross between two series - atmosphere and world exploration as in Dragon Quest and tactical battles as in Fire Emblem.
    - Legend of Heroes - Trails in the Sky FC & SC. It's also a traditional JRPG (not tactical), but unlike Dragon Quest, you can move characters around the field, so tactics are important here, especially in the later parts of the game. The most important thing is the atmosphere and the story, fans of "retro" JRPGs should be very pleased!
    - Legend of Heroes - Trails of Zero, Trails of Azure. There’s a fan translation, the games are completely playable. I finished both of them, which took me about 150 hrs. I didn't really like “Trails in the Sky 3rd” and the whole “Trails of Cold Steel” saga though. Too repetitive.
    - "Valkyria Chronicles" series. These are some of the best japanese tactical games. I should note that 2nd and 3rd parts can be run on the PSP emulator.
    - "Sakura Taisen" (Sakura Wars) series (except the last title - SW 2019, which is a slasher). The series is also developed by Sega. It was very popular in Japan in the late 90's and early 2000's. Only «SW So Long My Love» is officially published in English. «Wii» version runs better on the "Dolphin" emulator than PS2 version on "PCSX2". Also a fan translation of the first SW game for PC (1996) was recently released.
    - "Langrisser" series. The 1990s originals are better than the recently released remake. They made the gameplay in the remake very casual, and visually it's not expressive.
    - Nintendo "Wars" series. Developed by the same company as Fire Emblem. A remake "Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp" should be coming to Switch soon.
    - "Wargroove" - indie strategy from developers of Starbound, inspired by Advance wars,
    - Banner Saga series - story driven western indie tactical RPG with beautiful art style from ex-Bioware members
    - "Wuxia" series - chinese games based on fiction about kung fu school,
    - Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children - south korean indie tactical RPG which combines anime style and XCOM gameplay mechanics,
    - "Lord Monarch" (Sega Genesis version). It has a very different gameplay (real time strategy, not turn based), but this gameplay is completely unique! It was one of my favourite games on Genesis. Despite it's real time, tactics is the key to success here, not the reaction rate. The game was developed by Falcom - creators of "Legend of Heroe"s and "Ys". Fan english translation has been finished in the last year. There are also versions for PC, SNES and PSX, but they are worse.
Haven't played these games yet, but they look promising:
    - Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga,
    - Banner of the Maid,
    - Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk.

When i was a kid this was really one of the best games i ever played
It was punishing (the first fight where you only have sarah, chester and MC aka bowie).
    Then you get
Jaha (my favorite cute axe guy)
Kiwi (i once thought he was a turtle throwing his shell at the enemy but turned out he was a fire breathing dragon??)
Slade (was always referencing him because he showed first in the intro)
Peter (sucks you can't control it at first)
    Then some characters i forgot
A mage in brown suit (ivan i think?)
A knight girl (may?) And a guy one
An archer a male and a female
    A centaur archer?
I forgot many of them, but the fun of advancing them to class, knowing that my MC has another class advance after him being a hero or some sort. And others turned badass like chester flying pegasus style or jaha being a badass with bigger axe :D

      @m.bennett9656 2 года назад +1

Mage in the Brown Suit: Kazin (fire, then death spells)
      May was the centaur archer.
The archers were Elric and Janet (I had to look those two up here sf2.shiningforcecentral.com/characters/shining-force-ii/).
      Peter becomes absolutely OP later.
I loved how you could evolve every character to a new class at level 20 and you had a choice to make with regards to their new class. Picking a new one meant completely changing their stats, weapons used, sprite and abilities. It was so satisfying levelling little tort to level 20 and he transforms into a flying fire breathing monster. Or turning Slade, the mobile but weak thief, into a freaking ninja.

They had massive success with Shining Force games on the Genesis. I don't know why they ever turned away from making the Strategy RPGS. Not only that, but it seems like the games lost character and became increasingly generic. It seems like many of the JRPGS became increasingly feminine and lost any real appeal outside of Japan. Most people really don't want to see these cutesy female heroes that are barely clothed and overly feminine men that look like they belong in a KPOP boy band. And then they wonder why these newer games don't sell. Looking at this video, it seems like there were three generations of Shining Games. The first one from the Genesis up through the Saturn which all look pretty good. The Saturn wasn't the most successful console and that probably had something to do with it. Then there is the GBA and PS2 Generation where they cranked out lots of games. It seems like they were losing their way in this generation but were still pretty appealing. They mostly abandoned the SRPG formula. Then we come to the point where they seem to have completely lost their way with the arcade fighting games and lower quality generic looking games from the PSP and PS3 generation onward. They need to get back to their roots!

Dude...how? I look at the videos of SF3 and the only thing I get is...sorry... disgusted. Idk htf they turned those beautiful arts of SF1, 2 and CD into...that. Look at Capcom...they took that art from BoF 1 and 2 and thought "lets make it even more beautiful"...and they did it with 3 and 4. The 5 one wasn't that bad...just the game itself is not anywhere near the level of the 2 previous ones.

Fire Emblem is closest thing to Shining Force but it’s a bit more on the anime side unfortunately.

@@baboon_baboon_baboon True, at least it still stays true to most of it's origins. When you see a Fire Emblem game coming, chances are good that it is a Strategy RPG. Shining Force, who knows, it's a very mixed bag at this point, but it will definitely have lots of Waifus.

Man i miss the gameplay of SF1 and 2. The only thing I can say is nice about the new ones is that Tony Taka art style(Old style was still nice though). If they would go back to their roots for gameplay and keep the modern art style I would be happy. Hell even a remake of the old games with the Tony art style would probably make bank and give old and new players something to enjoy.
