Hi Jovis. Yes, I am aware of the way Mac OS scales. I had already watched the video you linked as well. I am currently running a 4K display for my MacBook and haven’t seen any noticeable difference in performance. Lightroom, Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator are very responsive without any lag or performance issues that I can see. I just bought the PD3205UA. I have it hooked up to my Mac Studio running Ventura. I can’t get it to connect to my Mac. All I get is the “please press the monitor button to select correct input source”. Which one is the monitor button? There’s nothing that indicates what the monitor button is in the brief setup manual. I can’t connect either by hdmi or usb-c. If a product is this difficult to set up in 2023, shouldn’t this be revisited and corrected? I mean, WTF?
Happy new 2023! Great introduction to this monitor. One thing I am wondering about, which I don't find any information about, is if it's possible to daisy chain a second monitor from the PD3205U. I am not looking for the KVM feature as I am only using one computer, but I would love to avoid the extra cables as daisy chaining keeps things so much cleaner. Can the DP port on the monitor be used as an output port to a second monitor, or is the DP strictly an in port? Would be great to get some info on this. Thanks in advance!

Enjoy your instructive review. My PD3220U is connected to an M2 Max Mac Studio with a thunderbolt 4 cable. I want to get a PD3205U as a second monitor. The PD3205U does not have a TB port. How to daisy chain the two monitors. What cable is needed ? Thanks.
USB C 4K compatible or Thunderbolt cable. The second the display does not need to be daisy chain compatible, just the first one which is the PD3220U, there's a second USB C port on the PD3220U just use that to output the cable to the second display usb c, in your case PD3205U
Hello Art! Thanks for posting such helpful and informative videos. My question is… I own the Pd3220u and I would like a second monitor in the PD lineup. I was wondering would this be a good option and could this monitor be daisy chained to my current monitor? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!
Hi Art, another great review. I am looking for a new monitor for either my Mac Air M1, or a new Mac Mini. I was looking at the LG 23.7" Ultrafine IPS 24MD4KLB-B which has 5 USB-C ports, all on the back. It was apparently designed to work with Mac's, as I'm sure you know, but I see you seem to be a fan of the BenQ line. Just curious what your thoughts are between the LG Ultrafine and the BenQ Pro design PD2705U? Maybe there is a video here to make as both appear to be good matches for Macs.... Many thanks if you have any thoughts on which might be better for general use and some photo/video editing. Spencer
All of them are compatible with Mac really. You should know that I am BenQ global ambassador for their pro display line. However, I'm not preferring their display because of this. I prefer them because of the calibration that they do to these panel at the factory. BenQ Pro line both SW and PD are rigorously calibrated compared to other brands and that is why I prefer them. PD2705U is a good display. Another thing to note is that BenQ display is matted and others including LG will most of the time lean toward glossy. Glossy display will always show more color and contrast, it will make what you view looks flattering, however, it is not necessary accurate. And that is something to be aware of. If you are a pro or dapple in the creative arts, having a matted display is generally better because what you are seeing is honest and if you can get images to pop on matted display, it will look amazing on glossy as well. But the reverse is not always guaranteed. Hope this helps. If you have any follow up question please Start a new comment this way I'll see it.
@@ArtIsRight Your point on the matte finish and photo editing is something I was not aware of, so I will definitely go with the BenQ now. Many thanks again Art - you have saved me time, and the hassle of a return!
At this point, you may see a comparison with it and the PD3220U but that would be about it. You can find more about the model in this video ruclips.net/video/om6Hat8w32Y/видео.html
Thanks for the "Preview!" Very promising. Question: I've seen a couple videos that say running 4K monitors from Mac Studio Ultra has diminishing returns due to refresh rate (I believe). "They" say that the Studio lineup just can't push the 4K signals properly and you can't take advantage of true 4K (I'm thinking 4K video, in this case). Any thoughts?
I don't know what those videos are talking about. I'm able to get 4K 60 Hz on these display without issues. Without knowing the specific that the others are referring to, I am unable to comment further. I don't think that it is an issue in daily used. I have been using the Mac Studio with 2 4k displays and it works just fine. Some one is always going to find something to complain about ;)
@@ArtIsRight Thanks!!! I look forward to your further info on this model and especially how it might compare to the SW line (i'm in need of a new duel monitor setup for video and photo editing). Always happy to see content from you!
Hey Art :) im excited for the full review of the pd3205u! I have access to only the pd3205u and the pd3220u where i live and i want to do color grading work. What would you recommend? I know the sw is the onw to go with but that's very hard to get in the country i live in :)
hi art , your videos are just phenomenal ,excellent, verey deep insights. i am looking to buy mac studio base version for stock trading, for that i need 4 displays.one 27inch Qhd monitor rest 1080p (24 inch) monitor is what i am thinking (after watching so many videos) .would it work fine with mac studio. because i have been hearing on youtube about multiple display issue , scaling etc . what would you suggest with which resolution should i go for 4 display setup .27 inch monitor what i want.
27" QHD or 24" HD or FHD does not have any scaling issues, it does not scale at all. As far as model, any one would do really. Since you are needing 4, I would look for one that is priced within your budget and possible USB C input.
I'm looking to get either the PD3205u or PD3220U, doing mainly 4k video editing professionally. So far in your testing, is the PD3220U worth getting over this model even though I may not use the P3 colour space?
@@ArtIsRight Hey Art thanks for the response. I eventually got the PD3220U and it's been great and have set the colour mode to Display P3. However I noticed that the contrast is lower than the display on my macbook and I can't adjust the contrast level in the settings. Also, the colours are also slightly different from my iphone and macbook - does it mean I'd have to get a hardware calibrator? Appreciate your help!
Hardware calibration won't match your color and no display will match one another. ruclips.net/video/QmyDEHNB1pQ/видео.html ruclips.net/video/NxTNSkxgVP8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/8PJYT-R-TLM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/8qHYsJDSKWM/видео.html each of these 4 videos will partially answer your question. I just order this one since It is under 500 €!.. I’m ordering an M4 Pro 16 inches soon, Did I choose the right screen/monitor for such Mac 🙂?. Saludos desde 🇦🇹👍🏼
If your USB C and output signal it is the same as display port because USB C itself does not carry display signal, it uses display port overlay, which is the same signal as regular display port
Thank you, i bought this monitor for my M1 macbook pro. I am not sure why i have these issues -There is an option to choose USB Configuration in the menu if i choose USB C 3 GEN1, the full screen play back of any video will be stopped after some seconds and system will stop working. The SSD speed i can achieve through the the usb c port on the side of the monitor will be half of the speed of a normal usb c port on M1 MacBook and USB A port is almost useless in terms of speed. - If i choose USB 2 option in the menu, the fulll screen error will be gone and both USB ports on the side of the monitor is really slow.
Heyy This is such a great video. I am currently upgrading my set up. Wanted to know the difference between the pd2527u to pd2705u. Are they for a different target audience? or same target audience but with lesser features? There is a substantial price difference between both of them. Would love to know your thoughts. Thanks in advance
PD2705U is an entry model, primary the variation between this and the higher end model comes down to color gamut coverage, 99% sRGB vs 95%+ P3 in the higher end model and connectivity. This one use USB C, where as the PD2727U uses Thunderbolt when you can do display daisy chain on supported computer. Otherwise, they both can show great colors and etc. This is also the variation in the price point as well.
@@ArtIsRight yes. Hence, I am looking at the PD2725u or the PD2705u. In my country, we don't have BenQ stores, only distributors. So it's difficult to understand how different the colours are between both the screens by just watching RUclips videos because both have been equally praised on RUclips. Don't know how to compare.
Like I said, mostly it has to do with the P3 coverage. Will you see this in person, may be, but it would be hard to tell. This would be something that you look at the spec based on what you need. What you might see is that the PD2725U has more saturation in P3 Gamut compared to PD2705U. But I would look at the need vs budget when considering this.
HELP ME ART! I'm really torn between the PD3205U and the PD3220U. Is Thunderbolt 3 and 1% better color accuracy really worth $400? I use my display for photo and video editing with a late-2021 Macbook Pro 16".
for sRGB and REC 709 it is 1% but for P3 color space you are looking at lower double digits. TB3 will also allow you to daisy chin another display to the PD3220U something at PD3205U Can't. It all comes down to value proposition and what you are looking for. I am still in the testing process for this display. I'll have more to comment on this once I am done with my testing.
@@ArtIsRight thanks for the info. It's still a tough call for me. Being a third more expensive. I've run my business on a 27" Apple Cinema monitor forever so anything is likely a significant upgrade.
@@ArtIsRight I just scored a PD3220U used for $750. It's in perfect shape. Awesome monitor, but man, those speakers are the WORST. Thanks again for your help. Keep up the great work - your content is really fantastic.
I just got my BenQ PD3205U monitor and everything is fine except one thing. I am really concerned about color temperature of my monitor. When I put PD3205U to another IPS screen that my laptop has, the colors on PD3205U look way warmer. You can really see the difference between whites in interface on the monitor and on my laptop screen. So what is right? Are color really supposed to be that way and my laptop screen is the one, who had colder color tones than my new monitor? Since the monitor is Calman color calibrated from factory, I suppose it should be that way, but may be there's a mislead in calibration? I just wanted to double check.
Laptops generally are much cooler calibrated from the factory and less accurate overall. Monitor is Calman Verified but not necessary Calman Calibrated - different thing. I would personally defer to the PD for color
Hi Art Love your BenQ reviews. I currently own the PD3220 connected by thunderbolt 3 to a 2018 MacBook Pro and would like to daisy chain it to the PD2705U. Is that possible?
it depends on what you do... for photo and most SDR video this is just fine. For HDR video, it is not quite there. This is largely dependent on your workflow.
Hello art, i just pre ordered the pd2705u yesterday do you think its worth it if i cancel it and order the pd2725u? Or the difference isn’t worth, Thanks.
Hi ART, I would like to buy the new model of BENQ PD2506Q (QHD). One question ... In your opinion, for video and photo editing, is there much difference between an 8BIT panel and an 8BIT + FRC (10BIT) panel? From what I read on the net it would seem that an 8BIT panel shows a lower chromatic scale than an 8BIT + FRC one. 8BIT> Display colors> 16.7 million colors 8BIT + FRC> Display colors> 1.07 billion colors
@@ArtIsRight @ArtIsRight when to expect the screen calibration and full review am I missing that in your upload videos or is it yet to come and is this model a 10bit monitor
Art I have the sw271c and I keep having an issue where the monitor is connected to the m1 max 14 in and it’ll say it’s connected but no video is coming through. It’s happening everyday and is making the monitor unusable. How do I fix this issue? I’ve already tried multiple cables. 😩😩😩
Hi, I am trying to decide between PD3205U and PD3220U. I know that PD3220U support 95% P3 color space and you can daisy chain 2 more 4K monitors with that display - but in my workflow i do not need that. My confusion is the aesthetic look : is PD3205U Stand made of metal or it's plastic? And is there any other major difference between PD3220U & PD3205U. Also PD3220U is a 2 year old monitor while PD3205U is a new release. I tried searching whole internet but no one has made a comparison video among PD3205U and PD3220U model. I see in your comments you promised to make one but I could not find it on your channel as well. I need to make a decision by tomorrow. Thank you & your videos very helpful. PS : I am going to use it with Mac Studio.
PD3205U stand has a metal core and plastic over lay. Color gamut would be one of the variation in addition to the connectivity and display placement PD3205U entry, PD3220U Premium. Had not make a comparisons yet, Either one will work with Mac studio. 2 years old is 2 years old, it really means nothing because you are still get a display that was manufacture recently from the factory. It is not like you are getting a stock 2 years old display. The panel and connection has not changed at all in the past 2-3 years when it comes to LCD ISP LED Backlight. So either one is good really.
@@ArtIsRight Thank you - I decided to go with PD3220U. Beside the premium panel - this monitor looks great - what convinced me most was the metalic base and no bottom chin - just plain bazles. it looks great.

@Suha Parveen all BenQ proline as of is now is 8 bit + FRC. PD3205U review coming at some point. It is an entry PD so don't expect much interns of color gamut coverage beyond sRGB and REC709
@Shahbaz Ahmed SW & PD comes down to hardware calibration and color gamut coverage. SW cover 99% Adobe RGB where as PD does not. ruclips.net/video/nKajHQh4eFE/видео.html I would choose the display based on your workflow for color gamut and whether you need hardware calibration or not, more so than pixel density at the same price point. Hope this helps.
Thanks for this - bit confused as to how this compares to the 3220 though! That has no 'chin', but I think it's more expensive. I wonder if the panel quality is actually better, though. I find the BenQ line pretty confusing - almost too many options...
Just purchased pd3205u and may say it is nice display but there is some issue with sound control. I am using M2 Pro Mac mini and sound controlling is blocked, can't increase or decrease from from menu bar neither from keyboard. If I use sound control from monitor everything work but from macOS it is not. Display firmware upgraded to to latest 024 version. Mac mini use macOS Ventura 13.6 operating system. Does anybody encountered same problems?
I think this is a dac specific issue through various IO, this is an issue that will happen on all 3rd party display. What is your setup and what are you trying to do? Are you using the display speakers or the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the display?
@@ArtIsRight I am just connected Mac mini M2pro via USB-C cable which came with display to the USB-C port of display. @@ArtIsRight Thank goodness. I ordered with hopes that it would be. P.S. I followed you on Twitter and messaged you on there as well.... Hi. Firstly, Thanks for all. I will buy new monitor but I cant choose still. I have Windows system with 3080 graphic cards. I do 60 prosent photo 40 prosent video. I cant choose still 27 or 32 inch? 2k or 4k? I am going between sw270c or pd 3205u. Please help. Thanks.
SW vs PD they are in a different league and when you talk about these 2 models they are at the opposite end. SW270C is toward the top of the SW line up and is known to have one of the best panel. PD3205U is an entry PD display. So if I have to choose I would go with the SW270C for greater color gamut coverage and better accuracy with hardware calibration.
This monitor looks nice, but it’s 140ppi, which is not great for macos UI scaling. You’d want either 110 (for non-retina) or 218 (for retina) . How do you find it with a mac?
Several users have reported there's really no advantage to the 3205 to the 3200... what's your take? I'm a little reluctant to buy a 7-year old monitor (3200)...
Calibration from factory and uniformity wise, I think this would be better than LG. P3 Coverage wise LG is better than this model and is more inline with PD3220U than this model.
Having just received y BenQ 3205u display I can say setup is not for the faint at heart. The Quick Start guide supplied was insufficient for me to get a working display with my M1 14” MacBook Pro using USB C to USB C connection. This is my first use of an external display; I am mostly unfamiliar with the many port connections available on an external monitor. My first attempt showed the MacBook recognized the BenQ as a connected device. I could see it in the Display panel. In the Preferences/Display panel when I selected the BenQ, the MacBook display dimmed and the BenQ display said “no cable connected”. So I’m left with a dimmed MacBook screen and a non-working BenQ display. No way to control anything. We if I turned off the BenQ the MacBook came alive and showed only its display screen. Contacted BenQ support who replied quickly I power cycle the display along with checking all the connection, something I already did. Power cycle did nothing, They did inform me that the display does not auto detect a signal, so you must manually using the five-way controller cycle through the three available inputs. That did the trick, the screen displayed the Mac screen. Nothing in the Quick Start guid suggests this choosing the BenQ input step necessary. Did easily find the full manual on the internet, someone essential to understanding this display. Once I had a working display I found the text too small for my vision. By adjusting the screen resolution I did get an adequate text size at the expense of a less than full screen. I do need to gain a better understanding of the resolution adjustment. I did a quick Lightroom edit i and am very happy with the display image and its color compared to the MacBook. I understand the BenQ has many additional ports, but at the moment don’t have an understanding of “upstream” and “downstream” when describing a port. I would like to connect to my Epson P600 printer using a USB B cable between the monitor and printer. Can I do that? To summarize I think that customers unfamiliar with external monitors will struggle to get this working. Better instructions are needed. Also the the provided base is quite sharp. I cut myself trying to position the screen to insert cables, which are in an awkward location. The base has sharp edges, enough that I only recognized the cut when blood appeared on the Starter Guide. Still I’m hoping this reasonably priced monitor will suit all my needs for editing photos.
Having had to set up hundreds of similar Dell monitors; I'd add the cables first, clip in the stand (all while the screen is still flat and with the protective plastic covering on) then, using the stand strut as a handle, flip it upright and remove the protective plastic. Made computer setup easier, faster and safer from finger prints. However; perhaps not as friendly for videoing for RUclips. :D Also; back then, about half the computers still used VGA so access to the thumb screws was a real PITA unless the screen was facing down.
Brightness in this monitor is bad joke. Benqs monitors from this series has worse values comparing to the past, brighness, contrast. Why ? Cost saving?
Always appreciate your knowledgable and in-depth videos Art, especially when it comes to monitors since I'm still looking to upgrade. Looking forward to the full review along with the EX3210U!

You're welcome. If you have any further questions please start a new comment this way I'll see it!
I have been considering the PD3205U, but have been waiting for the full review. Will it be coming soon?
Either one will do if you only use REC709, if you, however, need more color then PD3220U would be the one to consider instead.
@@ArtIsRight super thank you :)
hi art , your videos are just phenomenal ,excellent, verey deep insights.
i am looking to buy mac studio base version for stock trading, for that i need 4 displays.one 27inch Qhd monitor rest 1080p (24 inch) monitor is what i am thinking
(after watching so many videos) .would it work fine with mac studio.
because i have been hearing on youtube about multiple display issue , scaling etc .
what would you suggest with which resolution should i go for 4 display setup .27 inch monitor what i want.
Would be great if you suggest some monitors too .
27" QHD or 24" HD or FHD does not have any scaling issues, it does not scale at all. As far as model, any one would do really. Since you are needing 4, I would look for one that is priced within your budget and possible USB C input.
@@ArtIsRight thank you art for much needed confirmation.

Can i use mac mini M2 for this ??
yes why not

I'm looking to get either the PD3205u or PD3220U, doing mainly 4k video editing professionally. So far in your testing, is the PD3220U worth getting over this model even though I may not use the P3 colour space?
I would say so, better panel.
Hardware calibration won't match your color and no display will match one another. ruclips.net/video/QmyDEHNB1pQ/видео.html ruclips.net/video/NxTNSkxgVP8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/8PJYT-R-TLM/видео.html

I just order this one since It is under 500 €!.. I’m ordering an M4 Pro 16 inches soon, Did I choose the right screen/monitor for such Mac 🙂?. Saludos desde 🇦🇹👍🏼
It is a good one
Is there a video elaborating the usb-c one connection for all functionality in detail. Is there any limitations to that over display port.
If your USB C and output signal it is the same as display port because USB C itself does not carry display signal, it uses display port overlay, which is the same signal as regular display port
Thank you, i bought this monitor for my M1 macbook pro. I am not sure why i have these issues
-There is an option to choose USB Configuration in the menu
if i choose USB C 3 GEN1, the full screen play back of any video will be stopped after some seconds and system will stop working.
It has to with 4K and a limited USB C bandwidth limit. And it has to do with choosing between those 2 options.
Heyy
This is such a great video.
@@ArtIsRight thank you. I am not worried about connectivity. Want the colours to be right. The SW range is very expensive
Then I would look at the PD series.
They are good for displays and not speakers ;)
Any follow up on this monitor? Im looking to purchase a monitor and am looking at this one or PD3220u.
Review coming later this month, earlier next month
Considering Color grading for theatrical film should i go with PD series or SW Series. Can you suggest models for 4k 27inch & 32inch.
If your work generate you income, I would choose SW for the best color possible.
Hi Art Love your BenQ reviews. I currently own the PD3220 connected by thunderbolt 3 to a 2018 MacBook Pro and would like to daisy chain it to the PD2705U. Is that possible?
If you have the PD3220U then yes, that display support daisy chain and M1 Pro and up can handle that as well.
Will there be PD3220U replacement? Thanks.
:)
Unfortunately we did not get a review from you of this monitor, people say that this monitor is not bright enough, what would you say ?
it depends on what you do... for photo and most SDR video this is just fine. For HDR video, it is not quite there. This is largely dependent on your workflow.
may I know why you cannot dim and work in the room? Is this point a deal breaker for HDR work?
Sir, can this monitor display 4 monitors like the Benq 3220u ?
yes
Hello art, i just pre ordered the pd2705u yesterday do you think its worth it if i cancel it and order the pd2725u? Or the difference isn’t worth, Thanks.
I would say if you want something with a higher P3 color coverage then go with the PD2725U
8BIT> Display colors> 16.7 million colors
8BIT + FRC> Display colors> 1.07 billion colors
I would go for the 8 bit + frc model.

Great display
Please guide I am torn between sw270c and this PD3205u as those are the only budget option for me, and majorly my workspace includes majorly photo and video editing for online content. To be used with my macbook pro 14inch
SW270C is a much better panel. I would go with that. It has hardware calibration.
@@ArtIsRight when to expect the review for this monitor , it would help in my purchase decision and I had a question whether the 270c benq is a true 10bit monitor or its FRC 8+2 FRC
@@ArtIsRight just a quick query i have got PD2725U on sale in my country so is it good to go comparing with SW270c or should i stick to your suggestion for the SW270C, considering better brightness and better PPI with 4k on the 2725U.
Please sir reply as I need to buy today to grab the offer
Like any displays brands that is not Apple. PD3220U is better and has a larger color gamut coverage.
Curious to know which resolution settings do you use 3080p , 2k , 1080p ( scaling ) .
use the one that you can work comfortably with, everything is a compromise between being able to read (scaling) vs 4K native.
@@ArtIsRight should i use the benq as main display setting or extended display setting.
You can do either, but I would probably use the external as the primary
Just purchased pd3205u and may say it is nice display but there is some issue with sound control. I am using M2 Pro Mac mini and sound controlling is blocked, can't increase or decrease from from menu bar neither from keyboard. If I use sound control from monitor everything work but from macOS it is not. Display firmware upgraded to to latest 024 version. Mac mini use macOS Ventura 13.6 operating system. Does anybody encountered same problems?
That is because the sound via the display is handle on the display by the chipset / dac and it does not communicate wit the Mac.
@@ArtIsRight Is there any way to force chipset to communicate? It is specific to BenQ displays?
I think this is a dac specific issue through various IO, this is an issue that will happen on all 3rd party display. What is your setup and what are you trying to do? Are you using the display speakers or the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the display?
@@ArtIsRight I am just connected Mac mini M2pro via USB-C cable which came with display to the USB-C port of display. Sound working well but not controlling from macOS menu bar either from apple keyboard. I have reconfigured benq hotkey puck controller key dial from default brightness to volume control and use it that way until find other solution.
Aside from the size... are all of the features the same as the 27"
yes
@@ArtIsRight Thank goodness. I ordered with hopes that it would be. P.S. I followed you on Twitter and messaged you on there as well....

Salve, chiedevo se un Mac Mini m1 da 16gb e 512gb di HD sia in grado di fallo funzionare bene. Grazie
Depending on what you do
As an mbbs student which one should choose for MacBook Air m1 BenqPd3205ua or Pd3220u
not sure what mbbs is, between the 2 would look at the color gamut and what you need. If you need high P3 then 3220U, otherwise 3205UA
Whats the length and specs of the type c to type c cable?
USB 3.2 And I believe 2 feet
@@ArtIsRight Thanks alot. I will go with sw.
How reliable benq is? This will be my first benq I buy. I’d used it for coding, is this a good choice for programming? I’m not a designer.
They have really great hardware. This will work for coding just fine, there are cheaper one for that purpose as well.
This monitor looks nice, but it’s 140ppi, which is not great for macos UI scaling.
You’d want either 110 (for non-retina) or 218 (for retina) .
How do you find it with a mac?
There's a range, if you are fixed with the PPI that is ok too, just won't have a lot so options.
Several users have reported there's really no advantage to the 3205 to the 3200... what's your take? I'm a little reluctant to buy a 7-year old monitor (3200)...
3205 is the update to the 3200 so they are the equivalent just with an update panel and electronics like USB C and PD
Nice & Thanks :)

Great Video!! I wonder how does it compares to the LG-32UN880-B? It would mean a lot if you reply me 🙇🏻♂ . Thanks in advance 🙏

Thanks for sharing.
Also; back then, about half the computers still used VGA so access to the thumb screws was a real PITA unless the screen was facing down.
