Things would've been different if Nintendo decided to take a page from The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, with King Boo needing Daisy's body in order to resist Luigi's Poltergust, and Daisy being a ghost for puzzle-solving elements.
There'd be no horror aspect whatsoever because SHE'S the horror!

Daisy really should have been in LM3. Think about it, an angle where Luigi is about to save her, only for her portrait to be snatched away. Have King Boo mock Luigi, knowing that Daisy is "special" to him.
They should have Daisy in the Luigi's mansion movie. She would make a good partner to keep him company. And it could build their relationship more.
