I remember as a kid my local zoo had a bull hippo, and he was kept in a small concrete enclosure with what was little more than a large puddle. He was eventually sent to a zoo in Mexico, due to deteriorating health. Now he lives in a huge enclosure with a massive pond in it. He also has a harem of cows and has fathered several calves.

I am from Africa and I was just wondering the same thing, this animal belongs in the wild and it needs major range or expansive territory. It needs to walk out of the river into the bushveld (savanah) in search of food. Maybe a pride of lions would attack it and it flees back to the river. It tramples one or two Nile crocs along the way....that - is its life!!

    Here Here to Julia Crawford.
    Horrible, ignorant onlookers and zoo.
Under no circumstances would I pay for myself and children to gawp and giggle at an animals' misfortune.
Captive animals that are not endangered in TINY enclosures make me sad and livid; I bet the zoo execs don't live like that.

most zoos provide proper sized enclosures and just because animals aren't endangered dosen't mean they are not suffering in the wild

This is obviously a territorial display if you are educated in hippo body language, the thrashing of the head, biting at the water, fast open mouthed pacing, it’s all a threat display. He would kill all of those people if he had the chance. The problem is that his enclosure is far to small, and he feels the need to protect his territory. Large animals like this deserve large enclosures.

You are mostly right. It is having fun. Hippos in captivity are not all aggressive, like those in the wild. Hippos are intelligent, and playful at a young age. As for the size of the exhibit, if it were 10 acres the hippo would still spend most of its time in the water. That is where they are most comfortable, and where they get their exercise. I was a keeper for 20 years, and spent most of my time working with hippos.

I once ate a bunch of edibles and visited the San Francisco Zoo were that same hippo is serving his time. I remember the weed started to kick in right as I came upon his prison cell. I looked over and saw the Hippos caretaker toss a big ass watermelon into the water and the hippo swam over and crushed the watermelon in one chomp then swallowed it in two gulps. After that
I was so stoned that all I wanted to do was go swimming and eat watermelon.

Okay, I'm really sick of seeing zoo hate on here. Is that animal showing stress behaviors? YES. Is this typical of hippos in captivity? ABSOLUTELY NOT. So let's condemn all zoos/aquariums because of one out-of-context video on youtube. The hippo clearly has more space other than this pool, and no hippo is ever kept alone (unless there is some reason, like the animal is sick or is being aggressive towards others) in any modern zoo I've ever been too. I have over ten years of experience working with animals in captivity, and the only people who complain about zoos have no idea what they are talking about.
The aquarium where I worked at houses the largest population of sea otters on the Oregon coast since the early 1900s and every single one of our otters was rescued from the wild as pups and can't be released. So let's let a critically endangered keystone species vital to the health of kelp forests die out because "they don't deserve to live in a prison uwu".
It was only through the cooperation of dozens of zoos across the world that the California Condor flies in the skies again.
The Arabian Oryx was saved from extinction because of zoos.
"Zoos don't do anything for conservation" my ass! Hundreds of thousands of people are educated on conservation EVERY DAY because of zoos and aquariums. Anyone can experience and appreciate the beauty of nature because of zoos. On average, wild animals live AT LEAST twice as long in captivity as they do in the wild due to abundant food, healthcare, and lack of predators. Hell, we have a harbor seal that is 38 years old! Do you know how long they live on average in the wild? 18.
Are there bad zoos that don't take care of their animals? YES. Are they the norm? HELL NO. Go ask someone who has worked at a zoo or an aquarium for any length of time, and I guarantee they care more about those animals than they do themselves.
    Please educate yourselves.

Zoos are horrible places for animals. I remember going to the Staten Island zoo about 35 years ago and seeing a black leopard that had clearly gone insane from being in the cage . It was truly heartbreaking to see this animal pace back-and-forth in front of the cage with its head bobbing in an odd manner. It had been pacing in the same spot for so many years that he actually wore down the concrete pad that it was on . Never want to go to a zoo again.

He has land in the far back so he’s choosing to be in the water
