He's always THERE, 110%, wherever he is, he's LIVING. And that's something we can all aspire to be :)

Love the story of the musical bottle. My first thought was Grandma Lizzy with the grand kids reaching for the orb, popping the top and offering the kids caramels or scotch mints.
it's ok to appreciate the art that was made FOR british royalty, not BY them! the artisans that made them would be flattered. when you said the plant foam "allows you the freedom to screw up the way you like", definitely speaks to my inner craftsman!
you might be one of the few people that appreciates this, something my dad showed me as a very young kid, and I've never seen it since... Take a wire coathanger, tie two pieces of sewing-thread to the 2 bottom corners of the triangle. Whip the other end of those two pieces of thread around the very tips of your little fingers...then put the ends of those fingers in your ears. I spent hours listening to the incredible sounds it creates when I was a kid...yes, I was an only child ;)
4:26 a "relatively" simpler, but much cleaner edge method to do this is to set them in the lathe, as you did and score the cut line with a thread cutting tooth set parallel with the face of the chuck. Then you take them out, use snips to cut (preferably so you can use the discards for something else later) a 90 degree line almost to the score line and then simply bend and snap the discard part out. The finish piece will require a very light sanding on a block to get rid of the edge, but will have a perfect flush meeting surface to the next piece. We do this all the time when making brass globes, which are surprisingly difficult to find (at least, cheaply) for repairing old chandeliers and roof top features.
It is an amusing thought that a maker like Adam, once made the original in a similar shop, faffing around, laughing, singing, muttering, joking and scratching his head the very same way. And how much he would have loved to spend a day with Adam to explore the shop.
I for one thank you for building these British Crown Jewels. As a Brit it’s nice to see something recognisable to me being made, and the history and where and how the jewels came to be in possession is important to discuss. The Crown Jewels are something to be both proud and sorry for. And you addressed that well. 👍🏻

Credit to Adam to pulling it off (as usual) but Monday morning quarterbacking here, you had the hole in the top of the of the "balls" already. Always good to see other people's approach to solving the same problem. Great build.

Watching this got me to thinking about how difficult it would have been to make a perfect orb by hand with the tools of the day. I would LOVE to see the process used to make a perfect orb by hand fit enough for royalty.
I suspect the original is/was far less perfect then it seems, just close enough as it's meant just to be held by the monarch and if it was good enough that you wouldn't see any major flaws by eye it would be deemed "good enough"
@SampoPaalanen You're probably right. I wonder tho how many crafters lost their livlihoods or more because the monarch disagreed with how good "good enough" was.
@@ShaggyJustin Probably not that many as a Royal commission would have most likely been done by a guild master (or similar master craftsman) and those had a fair bit of political influence, if a king or emperor had unrealistic standards he could find that no guild would want to work with them.
I've made spheres from copper sheet metal and I would recommend adding a weight to the bottom so it stays upright. You have weight at the top which makes it harder because you need more at the bottom. You have the finishing done already for this project and that makes my method impossible. But... I add the weight before joining the two halves together. I clean the bottom of the sphere with acid and steel wool, then I add an appropriate amount of lead and melt it in the bottom of the sphere. If I want a solid sphere I solder it together on the lathe. I put solder in the sphere and affix it into the lathe with both sides clamping together. Start it at a slow speed and start heating the joint until the solder stops rattling inside. Then give it a few seconds with heat while it's rotating. Then let it cool down a bit while the lathe is still turning. Then I check if it's solid by dropping it on the ground from a cm and I listen if it rings or sounds dull. If it sounds dull the solder didn't do it's job. Thank you Adam, you are always a wealth of knowledge, I hope you see this comment and get more ideas.
"The lightness of touch" aspect even shows up in Adam's use of a Japanese hand saw, where he demonstrates that allowing the blade to work at its own pace is key. No forcing, as many would do, just let the tool "do its thing".
You know what they say about pneumatic cutting tools: best to be operated blade up, cutting towards your hands, with your work in your lap - preferably while using no PPE.😂😂 You are the true King, Savage. All hail. Long may you reign.

I really like what you've done with the time lapses this time! The explanation picture-in-picture with the assembly. Though the one assembling the cross is a lot of very fast, wide movements, a bit unpleasant to look at at that speed
I too find it fascinating, to own the thing otherwise thought impossible for non royalty to own, in a kind of stick it to them kind of way. But it also reveals the question of what's the point of all of this pomp, it's all an illusion. Then there's a fascination of watching a master craftsman. You truly are a good guy Adam.
Well, idk if it was really impossible for “non-royalty” to own these things because you could always build yourself a replica (granted, you had to be able to afford it but that position wasn’t always exclusive to the monarch, besides not all these jewels are relatively that expensive: the Crown of Romania is made out of steel, for example, but it’s a specific kind of steel obtained in a specific context) but at the same time the real jewels were made out of certain materials in a certain context and have been used and worshipped for centuries so would your replica really matter if it had no symbolic value 🤔 Nowadays they’re not really owned by the royals anyway, rather by the state and they’re as much a symbol of the monarchy as they are of the country itself
Take your executive bifocals and make them an intermediate prescription over a stronger near prescription. Add a jeweler's loupe and i think you'll have better luck being able to focus on the detail work you do. Plus I'd add some side shields to your glasses to prevent metal shards and debris from getting into your eyes. Thanks for so much Adam.
I had a similarly absurd thought of having it open to reveal an overflowing bowl of popcorn. It wouldn't be as much set-and-forget as a cigarette dispenser, but I do enjoy the absurdity
Is soldering on the foam creating any carcinogens? I'm super mind-blown! I have a wonderfully unfortunate skill of caution when I'm excited with new things.
Probably it's burning foam not sure why he's doing that with so many better options in his shop. Like clay, Playdough or a vice. But the flux is probably way worse anyway after a few hours your nose will burn. Your fingers will also get raw hangnails from the vaporized acid flux.
Threading small nuts in tight spaces, and knowing your love for tools, have you ever used a nut cross wrench for radio controlled cars? Cheap and handy !
On reflecting on the coronation, there appears to be a connection this piece has highlighted, perhaps a fine line between two worlds, but where the original has deep meaningful significance in each and every detail, this replica has its own meanings for Joe public, how many of us laughed at seeing the Holy hand grenade?! An interesting thought experiment, If the two were placed together side by side, what each piece would represent and stand for would be curious to compare. At least for me.
Anyone else feel like this should be a candy dish? And I mean like the kind of candies that you only ever find at a grandparent's house. Don't know why, but it just has that kind of feel to it.
As a jeweller, it's interesting to see the 'general purpose workshop work-arounds'. There are some tips though; solder should be tin-foil thin, and between the components. Also, to solder multiple components, we set them face up in playdoh, put plaster on the other side, let it set then peel off the playdoh and solder the back. Incidentally, the English Crown jewels only date from 1662, following the restoration of the monarchy (the old stuff was melted down by the republicans).
Adam, you could mount magnets on one half inside, and a metal strip on the opposite side inside, and the top will close and hold itself together without a hinge!!
“Bring forth the Holy Hand Grenade!”

Well, idk if it was really impossible for “non-royalty” to own these things because you could always build yourself a replica (granted, you had to be able to afford it but that position wasn’t always exclusive to the monarch, besides not all these jewels are relatively that expensive: the Crown of Romania is made out of steel, for example, but it’s a specific kind of steel obtained in a specific context) but at the same time the real jewels were made out of certain materials in a certain context and have been used and worshipped for centuries so would your replica really matter if it had no symbolic value 🤔 Nowadays they’re not really owned by the royals anyway, rather by the state and they’re as much a symbol of the monarchy as they are of the country itself

adam singing with his tool was the highlight of my day 9:33
Is soldering on the foam creating any carcinogens? I'm super mind-blown! I have a wonderfully unfortunate skill of caution when I'm excited with new things.
Probably it's burning foam not sure why he's doing that with so many better options in his shop. Like clay, Playdough or a vice. But the flux is probably way worse anyway after a few hours your nose will burn. Your fingers will also get raw hangnails from the vaporized acid flux.
Long live king Adam! King of our hearts. At his coronation the anthem shall be sung by assorted power tools in 4 part harmony.
Adam omg I drink peach diet ice tea too! I want to have a set of the crown jewels I'm so glad you are doing these. Thank you for sharing your process!
Starting episodes with asmr like that is 21st century, bob ross level of genius.
For one of your one-day builds, you could make the cane that Sophie receives from turnip head at the beginning of Howl's Moving Castle.
Threading small nuts in tight spaces, and knowing your love for tools, have you ever used a nut cross wrench for radio controlled cars? Cheap and handy !
For your safety adam.. floral foam usually contains formaldehyde so you might want to avoid heating it. It's really nasty stuff...
i would love to see lists of tools used in these videos and where to get them like those little clamps you have.
He's mentioned those in a past video. Kant twist clamps with round handle. Pretty expensive for the size, but maybe hunt for ebay lots.
It would be great if you could find and restore the Liahona.
Great Vids. Many thanks.
Anyone else feel like this should be a candy dish? And I mean like the kind of candies that you only ever find at a grandparent's house. Don't know why, but it just has that kind of feel to it.
Fellow Brits, I move to accept Adam as next in line, its mostly ceremonial anyway, and I'd love to see his version of a christmas message.
This is a real good one. The build was fun and the banter was great. Brandy :)
Adam, you could mount magnets on one half inside, and a metal strip on the opposite side inside, and the top will close and hold itself together without a hinge!!
Great build as usual Adam! How about a Faberge Egg next?
I'm intrigued as to which one he would pick to make.
Is it crazy that I was absolutely thinking of "Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares" while you were singing with that tool?
I say this in the most respectful way possible...
You are my generations New Yankee workshop.
