ASU fan and BYU alum here.
I attended the ASU v BYU game in 2021 when ASU literally couldn’t help themselves from jumping offsides the entire game. My entire family sat in the visitors section wearing bright yellow, livid with frustration. Some BYU staff handed out free ice cream to the entire visitors section all game, and every single fan on the way out said to us, “have a safe trip home guys” and “your team played well, keep your heads up” and thank you so much for coming to the game” and much, much more. Proud to be an alum from a school that shows respect, and grateful to be on the receiving end of that as a Sun Devils fan.

Sitake is an awesome example of sportsmanship. He pulled Wilson off the field when BYU was blowing everyone out, he always removes his hat when greeting an opposing coach, he takes a knee when the game is in the bag, he always speaks respectfully about other teams. Love that guy and I think fans are learning from his example.

@@stuartroach3815 That wasn't always the case. It's a thing under Kalani.
BYU players were once known as being extra chippy (though I'm not sure that rep was ever fair; but we generally had a few guys (like most squads) who were pretty mean; both during & after the play; under Kalani, though, that wouldn't work).

As a BYU fan I have to say: we learned a lot about sportsmanship back a decade or so when we played Notre Dame (a few times). Especially at their place, they were just excellent sports, encouraging, not letting meanness take over. Since that time I've seen Y fans really step up their game. Yes, we believe in being kind, even to our opponents, but more importantly we honestly believe and try to live like everyone we meet is a sister or brother. Even if you vehemently disagree with your brother -- like mine, who was a rabid Utah fan 😮 -- he's still your brother.

Just prior to the game, a BYU fan on X started a $5 Friday campaign for the child of a K-State fan who's been having seizures and raised $2000 or so for them (it was a shorter duration fundraising effort). BYU's alumni groups give service to the communities they play in when the team goes on the road-- thousands of pounds of food to food banks, socks and shoes for the homeless, art supplies for children who've survived abuse, etc, etc.
As a BYU fan, the thing that makes me the most happy is that there are teams like Arkansas who have started doing similar things like free treats for visiting fans in their stadiums. I love to see my teams win, but I love seeing kindness spread even more.

Two clowns with sour grapes after losing bets on Avery and K-State. First, Avery was complimenting BYU fans. How are home fans encouraging an opposing player not feel weird? I'm 70 and a lifelong BYU fan as well as a BYU alumni as well. I'm sorry to say that your interpretation of the kind words Avery Johnson had for the BYU fans is totally wrong. I could see from the Arizona game and moments in the BYU game, that not only does he have talent, he will be a great player as time goes on. His honest remarks about his experience at BYU shows that he will learn from the experience and possibly cherish his treatment here as it's quite possible he'll never have the same experience again while playing in other opposing stadiums. I wish Avery all the best in his career and I know from talking with others here in Utah Valley, they feel the same way.

So I still am excited that other teams come and hope their fan base is having a great experience! I've been to some BYU away games and it's definitely not like that and it is honestly sad. I don't think College Sports is about heckling people's religion, beliefs etc. Play your guts out for 4 qtrs and then shake their hand afterwards and wish them well because I hope every team we beat (hopefully many) have a great year and then as a conference we all become the premiere conference in Sports.

Opposing fans have said "BYU kills you with kindness". I remember one traveling UVA fan said that he travels all the time and BYU fans were by far the nicest to him that he had ever experienced. He said even when BYU was trailing UVA they would come up to him and ask if everything was OK and if they could help with anything. It was almost like a caricature he said. A former head coach of RSL Major League Soccer team, who was a gruff New Jersey guy, said in an interview that he had to get used to the "over-niceness" in Utah. So to a young guy like Avery Johnson, atypical = weird.

This is absolutely the most sorry shit I've seen in a while. Don't bring up what good someone is doing for another human bring and try to trash him about it at the same time. Talk football and leave it at that. And on that note know what you're talking about Avery is a baller and will improve no doubt, but bring the hate. You'll just look goofy in the end

@@darrincrapo6340 In case your question wasn't fully answered, the actual name of the "Mormon" church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; it technically never has been the "Mormon Church" but it's admittedly easy to say with our belief in the Book of Mormon as a companion to the Bible. The full name is a mouthful, but we're trying to get back to the usage of "Latter-day Saint" or "LDS" rather than "Mormon", and those who choose to respect us are being good about using that terminology.

The ultimate challenge for BYU fans is to “love our enemies”…and K-State aren’t the enemy…that’s Utah. We save up all our sins for that game. 😇🤬😇

What's wrong with being a decent person and trying to encourage someone else? Wouldn't you rather have others try to build you up rather than tear you down? Surely it's possible to talk about sports without being demeaning or mocking.

You guys sound like you have no idea how it went. It was just a calamity of dumb stuff in a very short time and byu took full advantage like a good team should. Avery is a true sophomore and this was his 5th start. His first start in an environment as loud as byu at night. Yes he still has improvement to make no doubt but that’s the growing pains with a young player. His main mistakes were the two picks one he shouldn’t have had an opportunity to throw. After Dj fumbled which he just doesn’t do, they should have cut their losses and run the rest of the clock out going in at the half down 10-6. The coaching staff should have made better choices at that moment. They also have a first time oc who has not done a great job of play calling but I’m sure he will learn too. Byu got the scoop and score and a point return that was just an outstanding play and poor play on kstate nobody played soundly on that return. Is the kid ok? It wasn’t anything worse than the result of running so far was it? Concerning Avery saying it was weird people being nice and encouraging, that was just honesty and a compliment. Most opponents talk trash to you.
