Speaking as a Chinese, Danny Rand as character never bothered me. While the gesture is certainly appreciate, whether Danny Rand would be "offensive" has less to do with him being Caucasian, but more to do with whether they bothered to depict the cultural sentiment with love and care. As far as I know, no Chinese really complain about Kung Fu Panda because the love was clearly there.

This isn't the first Asian Iron Fist I hope people realize that. The first one we seen in the comics was the one before Danny. Hell even before this one Danny's Protégé who actually is Asian little girl was supposed to inherit it from Danny.
That's fine,, but they're doing this as a reaction to accusations of racism, not because they want to shake things up. Some loud people said having a white guy be one of the greatest martial artists in the world was racist. As if having all great martial artists be asian isn't a racist stereotype?
Why not makes a series or film about either of the two?

I care about Danny rand. Granted his introduction, his inception, and his origin is borderline pandering, white saviour ish and a flat out mockery. But since his introduction they have never played it up once. His coming of age is not to dissimilar to Batman and since then all his arcs have done is pay homage mostly. Iron fist is based on Bruce lee, and if there wasn’t already a Shang-chi I’d be even more excited, but let’s not forget Danny rand please, he is more then just iron fist.

As a black man I think one of the main characteristics that makes iron fist interesting is his whiteness. Granted some of the earlier portrayals definitely delved into white savior tropes. Danny’s this white guy engulfed in Asian culture and tradition, I find that very intriguing. With that being said there can be more than one person that holds the iron fist mantle, so I have absolutely no issue with iron fist being white as long as it’s not an Asian version of Danny Rand.

Shorter explanation marvel doesn't know what to do with any character
Too much baggage on the shoulders of the legacies. Imagine what it must be like to have to write a story with a character with more than 50 years of existence. And a fanatic that to the smallest detail that contradicts something, takes out the torches. I understand them in part but that's why I say that they should focus on new characters, new stories ... For something the biggest recent successes in comics were; Miles Morales, Runaways, Young Avengers and Kamala.
While the reinventions: Captain Marvel, Iceman, Amadeus, IronHeart ... They never managed to stand.
The thing I really hate about the media around Danny Rand is that sure hes white but if people read the comics they would see when he was in Kun Lun he was a outcast because he wasnt from Kun Lun everyone looked down upon him from that, until he porved himself by going through the trials of Shou Lou in turn earning the Iron Fist. Also I dont understand this White Savior trope Danny has been always been portrayed as layed back and chill but also wise for his age but he does flaws and fails time to tume

I mean we DO have Sheng-Chi who is THE greatest Martial Artist within the MU(616). That doesn't mean that we can't have more than one Asian martial artist superhero, it's just that Danny Rand not being Asian makes him a little more uncommon and unique.
Danny Rand´s story was always "fish out of the water"story. You can be martial artist even if you are caucasian.

I couldn’t care less about a characters race, but I do care about a CHARACTER. The woke crowd doesn’t care about characters they just care that all things have a certain “diversity” quota. As a minority this feels pandering.
EDIT: I feel my initial comment came off as more negative than I meant. While I don’t care what race sexuality a character is I do think it’s a problem if this is the most important part of who or the “character” and I want nothing to with bad writing like this. I hope the character is good, and is the next Kamala Kahn or, is like later versions of Miles Morales, but I get the feeling that they’re not gonna do that and it’s gonna be another New Warriors. I hope I’m wrong but I’ve got an unfortunate feeling I’m not.
Also I don’t mind a new Iron Fist like you said it’s a mantel and I think it even makes sense for it to be an Asian guy. My problem is that his being Asian seems to be the focus and NOT on who the actual person is.

No Matter what race gets a certain mantle or no matter what new character from a different race gets brought in into the Marvel fold, it will always be considered "pandering" to people with that mindset

The actual truth is that the anti-woke crowd is the problem because they don’t care about the character. Every time they make a legacy character a different race, they do give the character themselves backstories, personalities, character traits and everything. We just don’t hear about them because there’s a wave of people crying about wokeness before they even have a chance to read the comic and find out about the character.
Miles morales, kamala khan, even Sam Wilson for cap, they are all CHARACTERS. Yet the anti woke will pretend that like the marvel writers just skipped that part and moved on to “fill quotas.”
I don't care for anything related to martial arts characters, who needs fancy moves when a wave of my hand can destabilize their molecular structure.

The real major problem for me was not that character was played by white guy but a white guy who lacks martial arts background. There are many non Asian actors who have strong martial arts background since childhood and who are also good actors. If Hollywood continue to cast actors who don't have the skills for particular character. There will always be that problem no matter roles. Put actors in their right roles. There is always that myth that Asian are experts in martial arts which is not totally false but they are also those who don't practice martial arts . That was failure of the series. Every one who has watched the series complain of lack of fighting skills including famous Action star Scott Adkins who could have played that role. I am certain if he or any talented martial arts actor played that role it would have been another story. Me I am an African who is also martial artist and actor. Shang-chi succeeded not only because the actor reflected the origins of the character but he also had martial arts background to be convincing. We all know that Tom Holland has basic acrobatic acrobatic skills, parkour and dancing which makes him a good Spiderman. Casting the right actor is 50% success for a movie. I wish success for the new Asian Iron fist and hope the story honor the legacy of the comic book

@ king breezy, the inhumans was successful, it was a bridge to the other marvel movies. You forget it was locked out of other countries, so sales was down, the same Chang Chi, the sales was down because it was locked out of the Chinese market.

1. The inhumans was a Marvel TV series on ABC by Jeph Loeb. Marvel Studios nor Kevin Feige has anything to do with that project.
2. The Inhumans FLOPPED as a TV series hence why it was canceled after S1

Iron first is in my top 5 favorite heroes of all time, I’m happy he’s getting light brought to his character again, Danny or not. Now when it comes to Danny rand I really do like him and appreciated his character. As a black guy I thought heroes for hire was a duo that was needed at the time where a black man and white man in comics together CONSISTENTLY was something people overlooked or was scared to do. Daughters of the dragon was also such a nice group as well. And I’m excited to see how the new iron fist masters the fist in his own right.
I think the story they're going for here is an Asian who has been engulfed in Western culture and has lost his roots, and how he learns to appreciate and explore it back. Which is weird because that's somewhat an underlying theme in Shang Chi as well
Reading the comments on this and you wonder what do this people who are complaining about the change do. Why do they care, seriously why? It’s a fictional character who’s story is evolving. The mantle is going to another character. But an old saying, What’s in the well comes out in the bucket. Seems like a lot of people have a contaminated water source. Looking forward to see where Iron Fist takes us next. Growing up in the 70s , he was a favorite for his character design.
Danny already did that in season 2. Where his girlfriend became Iron Fist. I would rather they keep Fin Jones in the show and have both him and his girlfriend as Iron Fists.
I agree they did something unique with colleen it was different and not accepted by everyone but splitting the dynamic between the two of them definitely made there relationship more exiting for me. Here’s to hoping they follow up to that or at least pay homage to the series.

Sorry no but I'm not okay with this. Woke culture is getting out of hand. The most endearing thing about Iron fist is where he came from and his journey to become the Iron fist. That's the part of the character I like and enjoy the most. That is what makes his character so endearing. I don't care what color the Iron fist is I don't care what sex the Iron fist is but unless whoever they give the Iron fist mantle to goes through the same character development that Danny Rand went through I'm not going to watch this.
Why can't they keep Danny as the main Iron Fist and also do a spinoff IF series focusing as one of the past incarnations of the character who is Asian. They can also do like a Green Lantern Corps thing where Danny decides to recruit & train other Iron Fist to battle criminals. Why replace Danny outright??? Ed Brubaker & Matt Fraction's Immortal Iron Fist was one of the character's best ever runs. Marvel already has Shang-Chi whose popularity is bigger than ever now thanks to his recent blockbuster movie so why not keep Danny??? Not every Martial Arts character has to be Asian.

No one is getting rid of legacy characters. This is a simple mantle change. Just like when Dick Grayson or Terry McGinnis took over as Batman. Daniel Rand can still be “your” Iron Fist just like Peter Parker is “your” Spiderman.

I was hoping they would cast asian with the Netflix show as it seemed a more interesting story to see a spoiled American rich kid with no connection to his history or ancestral culture be thrust into a world of kung fu and magic and service. Just seemed like a more interesting story. And knowing Marvel Danny will still be floating around the universe kicking someone.
I am not even a big fan of Iron Fist. But even I know that you boiling his story down to just a spoiled American rich Kid is a oversimplification and just Plain wrong. Also not long ago thinking that only Asians know Kung Fu or Karate and should use it was racist.
My apologies for the confusion. I did not mean to suggest that was his story. Simply a story I thought would have been interesting. A contemporary child born into material wealth living the life of a prince completely disconnected from any sense of ancestry, or his family's cultural history. Only to be suddenly plunged into the most extreme surreal version of lineage and obligation. It seemed to me an interesting take on the character. I probably shouldn't have commented at all as most thoughts take such a long time to really explain that a expedited version so easily gets misconstrued. I in no way intended to imply all asians know kung fu or anything to that affect. If you are interested in things such as racism and prejudice. I'm not mad at Danny being Iron Fist it just really made me roll my eyes at the fact that Iron Fist was supposedly the best martial artist in hand-to-hand I know it's a comic book but that never sat well with me

i don't always know what younger people are into but when newer things come out and stories change perhaps it's not made for us anymore. not everything belongs to me and what i want to see. i've had my heroes and stories that helped me learn. in my own way i'll keep learning. keeping things going for newer peeps is more important than what i want and need to see or be entertained by.

Making Danny Rand half-asian would be better, with a n obviously mixed actor, but it makes sense in the Mantle kind of way, they don't even have to kill DR off, they could make him take another moniker, even a villain, it's not like Iron Fist is Superman, it could even work to introduce the succesion of a moniker as a concept in a movie, the only other hero characters that do that concepts are The Phantom and Zorro and their latest movies are from the 90s

I don't see why this is a big deal. Superheroes giving up their identities and having someone else take over is tradition. Besides we all know Danny will get the mantle back eventually. Even if this new guy gets really popular like Miles or Kamala they'll probably just find a way for there to be two Iron Fists. This is something every superhero has done and we've been doing this for decades. So unless you're new to comics you should know this is standard procedure. For the record I'm not saying this because I'm dismissive of the chance. I just know people are going to complain despite this happening a million times before.
It's not always like that. See Mar-vell and Captain Marvel. I like Carol but there are examples when original character is put aside and everything points out that they wanna do it with Danny
@@fortecapopkultury2772 True there are exceptions but Mar-Vell is kind of a strange case. His death was just such a big moment that no one wants to undo it (yet). But again I don't see that happening with Iron Fist unless the new guy proves to be really popular. Alternatively if whatever new identity they give Danny winds up taking off they might just leave it be.

That's just terrible man, iron fist not being Asian was always a part of his character, and some of these "Diversity" characters are just terrible like Riri Williams and Elektra as Daredevil.
Doesn't matter to me. I like Shang Chi and old fashioned Kung Fu movies, I wouldn't mind the new Danny as Asian or biracial. In the end I don't care about race, I care about characters. Stereotypes be damned.

If they're going to change again after just passing the power of the Iron Fist to her then the story and actor better be perfect otherwise I'd prefer they let Colleen Wing continue and possibly make her Shang-Chi's love interest since him and Katie are just friends.
