  • During the summer of 2013, Phil White and two friends aimed to conquer the Middle Teton in Grand Teton National Park. As they began their ascent, the tranquility was abruptly shattered by the ominous rumbling overhead. Rocks of varying sizes, from small pebbles to large boulders, started plummeting toward them, prompting a frantic scramble for safety.

      I'm curious. Do you have to get permission to use a video you find on social media? Or can anyone post videos on social that they didn't make?

    • @outdoordisasters
      @outdoordisasters  2 месяца назад +17

      @@SageRosemary You can use clips, just not the whole video. It's called fair use. YT also classifies it as transformative. Basically, if you're adding your commentary or artistic addition to the video, you can use it. You can't just repost a video without any editing and call it yours. You have to add something to it. In my case, it's just part of the whole video. And I'm adding my commentary to it. Great question.

    Having lived a good portion of my life in. Or, near. Mountainous terrain. You learn to be alert of certain conditions that'll trigger slides. Living in Northern California for 15 years close to the Feather River Canyon Region...Rock falls y slides were more common than one would think. Due to the oversaturated winter soil conditions at the lower elevations. That's when you learn to read weather conditions. Avoid those areas that are susceptible towards slides y avalanches. Postpone trips that involve venturing into those affected areas. Especially...Burn scars from recent fires. Creating instability in the surface. As the trees depend upon a common root system for that soil stability. When you reach the higher elevations above 10K ( 5K in the Sierras )...I've always alerted myself towards deceivingly stable ground. When they're really unstable loose rock on the trail that'll give way. Without warning. It happens so quick that there's no real preparation for survival. As in Phil's case. Where...The rock gave out above the gents. Taking cover where he could. Riding out the perilous ordeal the best he could. I am very thankful God protected all 3. Especially, Phil. Where his outlook renews my perspectives towards the open trails. With a much deeper. Profound. Respect. Thank you for this video, Sir. One I'll definitely be referencing time and again. For those reminders of how truly fragile life really is. While treasuring each moment. Knowing they could be my last.

    I experienced such an event on Mt Shasta fall of 1975.
    My friend was struck and knocked down the mountain. Every time she bounced on the snow like a rag doll it left blood splatter. I seemed to happen in slow motion. She was helicopter rescued by the ANG. It lacerated her arms to the bone as well as broke them her fingers and jaw.
    I never saw or heard from her since, her name was Sinda or Cinda.

    Rockfall can happen anywhere in the Wyoming mountains. Just a couple of years ago, one of the sides of the Teton peaks sheared off. The sleeping woman. We also had a big rockfall in the Wind River Canyon. The highway was closed for a while. Massive boulders on the highway.

    Standard emergency procedure in a rockfall is to use your pack as protection, not your arm. Hunker down behind a rock, like Phil did, then get as small as possible and place your pack above you.

    In the UK, all the rescue helicopters have winches, so they don't need to land, they winch someone down who puts the victim in a sling or stretcher and then winch them up and into the helicopter. From there it is straight to hospital.
