I first listened to this on my phone speakers but I just gave it a second listen using my good Sennheiser audiophile headphones.......and what really impresses my on a closer listening is the rhythm section, especially Julie's bass line. WOW! This is good stuff!!
James Sterling Wow! She's just gone on my (long and ever-growing) mental list of Bassists To Learn From. She just keeps on going, driving that groove. Wow!
Yes!!! All three rhythm players have to dig in on this as it’s relentless and fast! Swings so hard and they never slow it down!! Julie!! I like that they veer away and play music not always in the NOLA trad style (like Marla’s “Shotgun Jazz Band” which I love for example). Molly’s “New Orleans Jazz Vipers” play the swing tunes, but not usually these kind of tempos. Love it!
They were terrific from the start, but playing together for three years has tightened their groove ... outstanding ! And do read Pop's blog - link above.
. . . And they do a really good job of it. Who says you can't do modern rhythm with a washboard? Seems that the original is from 1946, so the style actually isn't surprising: ruclips.net/video/HCkWdmJMbBE/видео.html
Outstanding performance by Marla and the ladies. The only thing missing was a floor full of jitterbuggers and lindy hoppers led by Chance Bushman and the partner of his choice! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🎺🎸😄👍
You can hear the original of this - played by another great all-ladies band 72 years earlier - at ruclips.net/video/HCkWdmJMbBE/видео.html It may only be a simple 12-bar in Bb, but Wow! It's amazing what the Shake 'Em Up Ladies can do with it. Many thanks for capturing it for us, Randy.
C'est un uppercut et un KO pour beaucoup d'orchestres qui essayent d'en faire autant ! Bravo ! Remarquez comme la contrebasse est bien enregistrée ! Si besoin mettez un casque pour mieux entendre.
It may just be a coincidence, but Haruka's first solo chorus (approx. 2 mins 20 secs) seems to be inspired by the first chorus played by the trumpet player Edna Thomas on the original recording from 72 years ago (in a band that had no trombone). Check it out at ruclips.net/video/HCkWdmJMbBE/видео.html
Go Julie! The classiest bass around. How she enjoys her work!
Now that really swings!

@@theblueriverjazzbandmusic2540 Yes, this is definitely trad swing, and it's great. Julie is fine bassist.
Julie and Molly are the band's engine.
