  • If you own a Chinese laser cutter this little series of videos about me learning how to use the free software provided, may solve the problem of trying to learn from a virtually unreadable manual.
I am nothing to do with RD Works, I am not an instructor and I am no expert. This series will document the essential bits of many hours of trial and error

Perfect timing for me to learn about these lenses. Thanks for all you hard work. This is something that none of us know much about.

    Absolute genius!.
Can't think of any other word.
Russ your way of explaining things simplifies it for everyone "well that's my personal opinion" especially new comers like myself who has to write things down others out there could absorb. Not that I'm thick or stupid it's because of my disability
Anyway thanks for another brilliant video.

Just bought a laser cutter. Your videos are incredible to understand the working of it!
A huge thanks for taking the efforts to create all these resources!
I go through your videos whenever I get time.

Man, I like the way you think - I do the same thing when confronted with some unusual problem, I'm not happy until I've investigated every possible aspect, different configuration etc. and absolutely hammered it flat! It'll be interesting to see how the power measurements work out - from what I seem to remember, GaAs has a slightly lower bulk absorption coefficient than ZnSe, but it's really the coating that will have more of an effect. Side note - when I was playing around building CO2 laser tubes back in 2003 or so, I used a gold-coated mirror with a tiny hole for the output coupler, and covered the hole with a small piece of GaAs wafer. Some people used salt crystals, but the wafer was much easier to use.

Thanks so much for sharing your learning with everyone. I mention your channel to anyone that I think might benefit from taking the time to listen to what you have to say.

Interesting as always Ross . Spherical lenses are spherical because they are easy to produce. Roll 2 stones together long enough and you produce spheres. However they as you mentioned do cause aberrations at their edged. Non spherical lenses are very hard to make but would be used in the highest quality optical systems. Alas out of our pockets.

    Hello Again Russ,
Were you aware that the gold lens holder screws right down on the black tube, they share the same thread pitch. I have both styles and i use the gold lens holder on the black tube allowing three lens locations. a year ago i replaced the gantry assembly with one from light objects, and it came with a much smaller head assembly which introduced all sorts of problems, so now im using a hybrid head made from 3 other heads....lol. As always your work is priceless Russ and you always keep us yanks smiling.

      Hi Scott
Yes, it's a 21mmx1mm pitch thread but the gold nozzle is a very compromised design.. Because the lens is in a fixed position, as you increase the focal length, the beam at the nozzle exit starts to grow in diameter. Accordingly the nozzle bore has to grow so as not to obstruct the beam. This results in a bore of 4mm or more. This is fine for engraving where you need but the merest whisper of air flow to protect the lens, however, when you need to cut that nozzle bore becomes VERY important. The pipe coming into the nozzle is also 4mm bore so there is no pressure buildup within the nozzle just a casual flow of air drifting out of the nozzle.. When you cut organic materials (wood or leather) the material destruction process causes copious amounts of smoke. Smoke is actually millions of micro solids drifting around in a gas cloud. When the laser light interacts with those solids, they heat up, stealing energy from the cutting action. Hence it is vitally important to get rid of those particles out of the BOTTOM of the cut where they will not affect cutting efficiency. To get them out of the bottom of the cut you must inject a sufficient flow of air right into the kerf.. The kerf may only be 0.1mm (.004") wide. How efficient do you imagine this process to be with a 4mm diameter nozzle wafting air at a 0.1mm wide cut????
The black nozzles from the other lens tube system is perfectly designed for cutting. Firstly it has a 2.4mm nozzle hole (half the area of a 4mm hole) which causes a flow restriction. Surely that's bad news because we want more flow??? No , the restriction builds up a small amount of pressure inside the nozzle which impels a gentle JET of air towards the kerf. If the work to nozzle distance is too large then the jet will expand in diameter before it gets to the kerf and it will still be an inefficient air flow. A gap of 3 to 5mm is ideal for efficient cutting with a small bore nozzle.
Thanks for pointing out that commonality as many will not be aware of the interchangeability
      Best wishes
      Russ

Cheers mate, as absorbing and as useful as ever. If you are in the process of planning what to do next with "China Blue" may I suggest trying to find the best way to cut through material at an angle other than 90 degrees? I suspect rotating the head and tuning the mirror position to suit is the best way but the use a mirror at the business end would be a more flexible arrangement.

      Hi James
Without going anywhere near Einstein, this is a relativity issue. You either do as you are proposing and leave the work flat and rotate the beam OR you leave the beam where it is and rotate the work. I see the first as a near impossibility but the second I do often. I have long strips (about 450mm wide) of material I need to cut down to size for my Chine blue machine. I drop the table and place the material in from front to back . The material is now sitting at 35 to 40 degree angle relative to the beam. I set the speed and power at the keypad and then press the left arrow and pulse button together. Works fine.

I'm a 12mm lens for engraving it's great for the cut of 3mm acrylic I must clear the speed at 8mm / sec 65% power
    this is normal

      @SarbarMultimedia  6 лет назад +1

      Hi
I got the short nozzle from Cloudray. These guys are not just web merchants, they supply manufactured parts to the Chinese laser factories. Just because you cannot find it on their website, don't despair. Send them an email with your special requirements and that are very obliging. I am sure that they will soon be adding these items to their website to make it easy for others to buy painlessly.

      Hi Shawn
Thanks for the kind words I have developed many tools/aids over 3 years learning some are better than others. I am always willing to share. Sadly, You Tube ceased their private message system so just add your email to another comment and I automatically get an email copy. That means I can immediately delete your email address from the public arena.

      Hi Dexter
You currently own a great piece of kit that will provide you with hours of fun and pleasure. I suspect this was an Ebay purchase that you dreamed would just be plug and play
Sadly that will rarely be the case. You will need to understand this technology so that you can be your own 24/7 tech support. The really good news is that (unlike the fair sex) this IS fathomable!!!
You Tube have ceased their private messaging system, so can I ask you to add a new comment with your email so that we can speak off line. I will delete the comment so that your email is not in a public area.
      Best wishes
