They completely ruined Bumis character. How did Sokka and Katara get Appa to fly without saying Yip yip. Why was Katara able to waterbend 400metres in the sky on Appa to stop a fireblast but not able to waterbend a tiny bubble. Why can Aang fly. Why is Katara laughing in the serious scenes. How did Katara learn to Icebend after barely being a waterbender. I'm not even going to finish it past Episode 4. What a joke of a show.
Why was Roku not introduced first being that he was supposed to be Aang's guide and the avatar that came before him? Why did Aang make it seem like he had uncontrollable powers that put the other airbenders at risk and they were afraid of him like he was some monster. Why does Zuko seem subordinate in some situations like he is asking for permission instead of being the stubborn strong character we know and love. 🤔
Ignoring all of the changing to the plot(I went in expecting it to not align with the cartoon) I just could not get past the bad dialogue and acting. I didn’t make it past the second episode and I’m so sad because I was so excited
I agree 100% honestly I'm open to the changes as long as it makes sense and work. It's a "adaptation" not shot for shot remake. The original show will always be special to me, but I'm still very exited for this.
It has been said that Netflix will be closely watching how well this series does. If it is successful, it has been rumored it will be greenlit for S2 & S3 and they will be filmed back to back to prevent the actor aging being really noticeable
Unfortunately I can see why the original creators left. I don’t blame them. I wanted it to be good so badly. I’d say overall 5/10. Still better than the movie.
@@alanrenemorenomedina4526 hey you’re opinion is valid too. It personally wasn’t for me. That being said, if there’s a second season, I’d watch it. I’m not saying it was outright terrible like others have said. I just didn’t think it was amazing.
@@chalbramwell5353 well no I don’t know first hand. Just speculation. Regardless why they left, it still didn’t help the show that they weren’t involved imo. Do you know first hand why they left?
Since the legend of aang is a legend after all, I will try to imagine the show as if another person tells me the story this time, every person tells stories differently so that kinda makes sense in my head 😅
Based off of reviews it seems like the director knew its flaws but strategized by giving the avatar influencers special preferential treatment to make it hard to critisize the show and soften the blowback
I think people’s problem is that they want it “to be better than the animation or keep it” but the fact is nothing will surpass it. I think not having a 1:1 adaptation is good because as avatar fans we can have a 1A/1B situation to watch for years to come, keep things fresh and attract new fans
the way I look at it is why does this show even exist? as you said it will never be better than the animation so what exactly is it even trying to do? not that it will be garbage, but the motivation behind the shows existence is not nearly as pure as the original series. it's a cash grab standing on the back of a beloved property - as usual
I went to the 9PM fan screening and I loved being able to experience episode 1 with everyone cheering every time a new character was shown on screen! I’m so jealous (and happy!) for you to have gotten a chance to be with the cast and crew! I definitely agree about going into the show not expecting an exact replica of the original 👍🏼 Gordon did such an incredible job showing his range of emotions. I remember he said in a recent interview that he wants to portray Aang as a fun and goofy 12 year old, but still show emotion as he has a lot of heavy responsibility and knowing the Air Nomads are wiped out.. so he wants to show both sides of Aang 😌 I’m looking forward to how each of the cast will take these beloved characters and make it into their own, but still capture the personalities that fans adore 😁
Well he's also just wrong about it being fist movements that are doing the bending. The idea is that they are using their chi (as long as we're in the realm of fantasy) to do the movements. Even in the main yang tai chi long form there are a few hand movement that are thrown in with no power behind them that are either setup or are a distraction. A quick jab isn't exactly aligned with that unless you are spiraling up from your root (the one-inch punch for instance).
It's just the creators and writers of Airbender walked off of the Netflix show in disgust because Netflix wasn't being true to their vision. So anyone that liked the original probably should ask themselves why that happened.
That’s interesting cause I actually thought the exact opposite 😂. Not in a bad way, I’m not really sure what I expected either but when I saw him I thought it specifically didn’t match the voice
This show's been on my mind everyday for multiple weeks now. I am very excited! Very happy it's not a shot for shot remake. As for the Bumi scene, I think maybe Aang side stepping around the boulder could've worked better for LA, as it is in line with the evasion and footwork aspect of Airbending, but who knows. The cast as far as I've seen seems perfect. I honestly hope this show blows everyone away and silence the majority of the skeptics.
Sad part is, some ATLA fans will get upset that he doesn't backflip over it if that were the case. They will find a reason to hate it which is annoying.
Yeah, that would've definitely happened unfortunately. But at this point, I just ignore people who complain about stuff like that.("why is there a white guy there" etc.)Statements like that lets me know that anything they say regarding a show or an adaptation like this, is not worth listening to. Sure if they put it out in a civil manner and not like "ugh, this sucked" without giving any explanation as to why it doesn't work for them in this version of the show. It's fine. Actual constructive criticism.@@IonicThree
For me, even the animated series' first season was not mind-blowing. I fell in love with the show at season 2. (And Last Airbender is my favorite cartoon!) So I am just looking forward to enjoying this season and hope it does well enough for us to get into the meat of the story with the later seasons.
I felt like they did season one for kids, but when they were creating season two they realized the only way they could do the story correctly was to make it more edgy, more for adults.
I think people really underestimate the difference in theme between animation and live action. A 1:1 remake would without a doubt be bad. Live action needs to be able to tone some of the visual humor down (ex. like the goofy faces Sokka makes when annoyed)- which will immediately make the show seem thematically heavier in tone. There is also the A --> B problem. Its very easy to change locations or to show characters going from place to place without it feeling abrupt in a cartoon. That doesn't work in live action probably leading to more "day to day" filler of conversations initiating and planning for a journey. Lastly, the biggest thing people forget.....the original show was not ever a truly "perfect" show. It had some unnecessary filler, overly goofy jokes, plot holes, ect that do not have to be translated to a different version of the show. We remember it as perfect because as a whole product we loved it fully and sincerely so much that we didn't want to nitpick it. Not because it is actually a flawless product. Let's embrace the changes and give this show a chance.
@@UndeadSlayer5 except the last airbender is just a bad movie in general. even if the cartoon never existed and the movie was a completely new thing, it would still be utter shit.
Even if it wasn't a live action, and was a standalone, it was just bad. Some live-actions are bad at portraying the original source material, but are at least decent movies. Others are just bad and that movie was one of them. @@UndeadSlayer5
@mochiyeosang1908 no , the last Airbender only failed bc of doing the same thing logically. You can't fit an entire first season into a movie so they did things around that idea and ended up changing hella to make a fast paced movie somewhat work. It's still a bad representation of and comparison of what the OG avatar show was but clearly it's just an alternate universe version of it. And the cgi was horrible at times.
@@UndeadSlayer5 There were things wrong with that movie that went beyond simply being a bad adaptation of source material. The actual direction was completely broken- there were unnaturally long pauses between dialogue, extras just standing in the background, illogical camera shots, ect. The bending (arguably the most definitive characteristic of this property) was absolutely terrible. They didn’t understand that every movement needed to be associated with an actual bending of element. There’s so so much more
I’ve been as excited for your reaction video as I am for the actual series! I knew that if you liked the first episode I’d be able shake off all the negativity from all those hating on the show. I’ve been waiting for this masterpiece since it was first announced and I can’t believe that we’re just a few days away from experiencing greatness. I can’t wait!
Same! Up until now, TheAvatarist's opinions have been almost exactly as my own. So this review made me super confident that it's going to be amazing. I can't wait!!! just 2 more days!!
The haters online are brutal. They're just hating because their minds aren't open to the possibilities like King Bumi's. Then there's some haters that just don't want the live action to succeed, because they didn't want it to begin with. So they review bomb it. This is why i watch your reviews because you're genuine. Now i know it's gonna be good. Keep up the good work. Stay flamin. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I think the darker take on the world of avatar isn’t an issue. I actually liked that its taking itself more seriously than the cartoon, especially for us fans who loved peak moments in book three. To me it had the same tone to it that book 3 had. Things I liked - Sozin tricking the earth bender. Yeah we never thought why nobody sent backup if they knew a war was brewing. Using a false message as a distraction makes sense, and Zak parallels it later by using the siege at the North as a distraction while really he’s taking Omashu - Realism . These are kids who grew up in a time of war. Yes the cartoon is special because they still acted like kids and goofed off even when things were serious- but for proper pacing and storytelling without disconnect from the live action setting, people have to also react naturally to those dangerous surroundings. That reaction shouldn’t be constant comedy and cracking jokes. So while I miss the levity the comedy and goofy stuff brought to their journey, I do understand the change. Especially after the air nomad genocide that really set the tone for the series. - Gyatso and Aangs relationship building, the callback to it during Aangs avatar state freak out. Gyatso matters more to Aang than Katara who is a stranger, so his words calming him down made so much sense and had more emotional impact. I was BAWLING - Unpopular opinion: but I like this Katara. Katara in the cartoon felt mature to me from the get-go, with this Katara I think her innocent/naive outlook on the world about how they need to have hope and that’s why protecting Aangs important cz he connects people, is sweet and accurate to a traumatised little girl. She’s very timid rn so it’s an indication that this’ll give her a good arc where she will grow into her confidence in her bending and take on that motherly role in the group. She wont just be that person naturally like in the cartoon. Rather seeing her family risk their lives on their journeys will shape her into that protective motherly katara. Wither her trauma from seeing her mother die, this arc for her makes sense to me, although I did miss her sassiness. I understand why people felt they couldn’t connect with her. - Sokka being better trained: he’s a military kid, and Hakoda left him in charge of a whole village. In the cartoon the village was smaller so him being a dork was passable, but here the scale of the Wolf Cove is much larger and so Hakoda handing all that responsibility to a teenager would have been ridiculous unless he had the skills for it. I love dork sort of douche in the beginning sokka, but I think Ian did a fantastic job with showing us his protector/leader side and he was still very deadpan and had funny one liners. Plus he still has insecurities to overcome which create his arc, and its following a different route than the show which I appreciated as someone who used to get tired of the comic relief treatment sokka kept getting in the cartoon. Like yes he’s the meat and sarcasm guy, but that’s not ALL he is, so seeing the seeds of what he could be here was very exciting to me. -Zukos avatar journal. Other than the fact its absolutely adorable to me that Zuko is a NERD who knows all these cool facts about avatars that nobody else cares about because he’s been missing for 100 years (but srsly…awww❤) its really cool that they covered up the base of Aang getting information on the previous avatars, in the show it was his plot armour that just made him stumble across the right people at the right time. Also its cool that even though at this point zukos still ‘‘evil’’ he’s a part of team avatar through his research. Like he’s still helping them in a way, which is really cool foreshadowing he’s practically with them IN SPIRIT!!! - Sokka not liking it when Katara bends because it’s dangerous if anybody catches her bending…I can’t believe how logical that was. I didn’t even realise Katara practicing so flagrantly was a plot hole till now, but again. After what happened to their mother (and waterbenders in SP in general) it. Makes. So much. Sense!!! Her not being as developed also makes sense, and aligns with her motivation for wanting to leave home. - Zuko and Sokkas single combat fight also made sense. In the cartoon they did it for comedic purposes, but since zuko didn’t have to fight anyone here it was a good plot device and demonstrated sokka true strength, his bravery and heart. He may not be a good warrior, but he has the heart of one. I like how that’s brought up later by both his love interests and the mechanist. Sokka def has a cohesive arc, ppl are wild for getting hung up on the sexism thing. - They gave Suki a character arc!!! She’s more than just bamf non bender now and I love that! Yes she’s isolated so her being socially awkward with them was so REAL and relatable. Some people really do live in a bubble and it holds them back from development. I also thought SuKka had good chemistry, they were cute :) - I like the angle they’re taking with the role of the Avatar, why he’s truly important to the people ultimate weapon aside. The message of him being a symbol of hope, and seeing the evidence of that in how he inspired the SP kids to fight back against Zuko (which is why Sokka believed Katara in the end btw) then the way he bonded and got through to the people on Kyoshi. To Bumi (which- UGH but I’ll get to that) it had a good set up and a consistent relevance. - I liked the way they connected eps to form one storyline that tied together. I.e; Mechanist, Jet, and Secret Tunnel. Call me soft but I live for solid character interactions. Aang and Teo Sokka and Sai, Katara getting to know the freedom fighters. Seeing Omashu was a whole lot of fun for me! Until we got to Bumi - Another unpopular opinion: I thought the take on secret tunnel with Katara and Sokka, and the hint being reinterpreted as love (but also opening that to all forms of life, not just romantic) that guides them through the dark and it talking about badgermoles is a fresh take that blew my mind. Idk if it’s real or not, it’s creative as heck and I respect it. Also badgermoles were the first earthbenders, so Oma and Shu learning it from them after following them since they were all friends was so sweet and wholesome to me. - Seeing Irohs motivation to help Zuko. In the cartoon he’s so singleminded about it even when Zuko made it feel hopeless to help him, I always wondered if Iroh just loved Zuko that much, but seeing that backstory of Zuko showing Iroh compassion, and that being what inspires Iroh to save Zukos goodness, CZ HES SEEN HIM DO IT BEFORE, makes so much sense- and again- WHOLESOME! Just as Aang is a symbol of hope for Zuko, zuko was a symbol of hope for Iroh when he needed him most, after his darkest day of losing his son. That stuff HIT - leaves from the vine piano vrs. - ‘nough said *tearbends furiously* - Earth nation solider having beef with Iroh. So cool. Wanted to pummel his face, but it really reminds you that there was a pre-Ba sing se Iroh that everybody had cause to hate, it’s interesting to see how other people perceive him. To us he’s our lovable uncle Iroh. The reputation of the dragon of the west is more understated in the cartoon- but Iroh has ruined lives before and that being shown like that was so well done. - Cabbage Guy - The fact Ozai seen to genuinely believe his BS about prosperity, and that love is a weakness. idk if in this they made Ursas loss a big thing for him or not and that’s why he’s so closed off, cz him faking his love for Zuko is actually so much crueler than the cartoon. It also validates Zukos turmoil cz ozai didnt just punish him and send him on his way, no he said he’s doing this to teach him an important lesson and that this is important yada yada. Zhao said it perfectly Ozai used Zuko, and we never called it that before we just through he hated zuko but zuko was in denial about it. Here he was more cunning about it- AND DID SIMILAR PSYCH MANIPULATION ON AZULA *HELLO?* This vrs of him might actually be even worse. Cz he feels real. They’re giving him dimension cz it’s Daniel playing him and I like it.
I just finished watching all of it and despite some changes to the story I felt that the essence of each character was true to the original. Sokka’s humour and Aang’s childishness were perfectly captured. Loved it!
I super agree about it not being a shot-for-shot thing. It was never going to be and never could be, if ya want that rewatch the OG show. All I care about is upkeeping the "spirit" of it, or the "vibe" I guess. Katara calling herself a warrior... is weird. Feels OOC (out of character) which is a big eh for me with adaptations. She could go with never saying a line from the animation, but as long as she feels true to the character of Katara, that's all I care about, so I hope that happens. But back to the shot-for-shot thing. Like I said, I agree it'd be detrimental. BUT, I would deeply appreciate significant moments/scenes being "the same" in the sense of the adaptation HAVING said moments. Of course I'd love some lines the same, such as the iconic "That's rough buddy" moment, or Sozin catching Roku before letting him fall etc (I know these are later season things but they were just first-to-mind examples). I don't need a shot for shot, but I still want pivotal and moving moments y'know, IN there. I don't want it changed or spiced up or or whatever in cringe ways in an attempt to be extra cool or something like some adaptations do, but this is one of my very small worries. A great example of a scene for me and a line (if we get this far) that I'd be bummed if it was changed/removed is Toph and Iroh having tea, specifically when Iroh says, "There's nothing wrong with letting people who love you help you." And honestly, a lot of hard hitting Iroh lines I hope they're able to keep in without it feeling shoe-horned and awkward. It is more than possible to "recreate" scenes and moments that retain their impact without being "shot for shot". Taking something that happens in a moment and then 'adapting' it to the new media. Ofc it'll look/sound different, but hopefully it's the "same thing." I have no idea if I'm conveying my meaning here. I'm pretty excited, optimistic, and hopeful about the show. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do differently. I just want to still enjoy it and not have it leave a bad taste in my mouth. Here's to hoping for the best!
Thank you for your summary. I'm not super hardcore so that I need to keep up with the news everyday so your videos summarizing the most important news always mean a lot to me.
Been an ATLA fan ever since the OG came out, and this live-action version is just boring. I wasn't having high expectations but the show still managed to let me down. To me it feels like the creators of this show doesn't understand the fundamentals of what made the animated one work. What a let down. If you are saying the show shines the most when its doing its own thing, then you are also saying it has done a bad job of adapting the source material.
Super boring. I got bored after finished episode 3 and never really want to continue. I just don't care if anyone talk about it and I don't know shit. It's just bellow my standards.
i was actually waiting for what you had to say since the private screening. THANK YOU FOR THIS IM NOW REALLY OPEN-MINDED AND EXCITED FOR THIS JOURNEY ON FEB 22!
Meh he got paid to do this review all he says comes from netflix and hes the only one who says the actors were doing so good rest didnt meaning his review doesnt male sense at all..... And if you hear closely you hear the mistakes he made you litterally hear that hes reading from a list... Most likely be given by netflix dont fall for this review just wait and see but dont get your hopes up to high
I loved that we got more of the Air Nomads. It was a nice surprise to have started out the show with a little more context but we also lose that build-up and revelation which could have also been really great. The biggest problem that both adaptions of the cartoon has is pacing. The original show had 20 episodes in season 1 and they took their time with world-building, limitations and character building. The dialogue in the cartoon was even better than the live action because it suited the medium. They just didn't nail it for me in the first episode and considering how far they went, I would say that they covered maybe episodes 1 - 3 from the original. I was really hoping that when Aang was captured, we would see him enter the Avatar state. That was such a poignant moment from the original, for Katara, Sokka, Zuko and Aang. And in both live action remakes, they did not have this part. They glossed over so many things in the first episode. They casually told Aang about the war and the 100 years that passed. Katara wasn’t there when Aang woke up. The innocence and childlike nature of Aang wasn’t portrayed as I thought it would be. Even when Zuko arrives at the Southern Water Tribe. In the original as ATLA fans know, Aang fights the Fire Nation to protect the people, this is where it is revealed to the people of the Water Tribe that Aang is not just an Airbender but the Avatar. This was such an important moment in the original show but in this one it just fell flat. Like there were so many things that they could have done which stuck to the original but they didn’t. I understand that it can't be shot for shot, scene by scene but there's just moments that should have stayed. I will keep my hope though and see where the series goes.
You are still my best youtuber for anythinf ATLA. No other youtuber ever compares. I have literally beem waiting for you since the premier and I watched your video 16 mins after upload. PS: It is 2AM here
I personally just have issues with Katara in the show. I feel like she cant act, as if every line is said with 0 emotion. I also feel like she becomes too good of a waterbender for no good reason really. Zuko was my favourite, such a great performance! Ang is doing great too considering how hard that role is.
Too much talking and no showing in this first episode. They spoiled aang backstory in the first 20 min. Aang SAYS he is a happy go lucky kid, they SAY he and Gyatso are friends. But they DIDN'T show it. Where is the HINTING at penguin sledding? Where is Aang making the kids laugh? I really felt like there was no levity in this first episode. They have people standing and talking about things, not doing them. This first episode is very shamalany. Also apparently fore enders are immune to fire, except for Zuko's left eye. 🤷🏽♂️
Good to know that you liked it! Also, if you don't mind me nerding out as well, on the animated series there are multiple movents bending as well! For exemple, in the final battle against Ozai, Aang does a double movement (a punch follwed by opening his hands) before making some rocks break and being shot like a machine gun. There are some other examples as well, and most of them come from Earthbending IIRC.
YES. If they had better writing, I would bump it up to a 7, maybe 8 out of 10. I could let the bad changes they’ve made slide if at the least the dialogue and some acting was better. Gosh dang it Zhao is a complete embarrassment. So dorky sounding idk what it is. Sokka’s actor is the stand out for me, and Zuko is great when his lines are written well. Gordon could use some acting classes and Katara I think has potential but her lines are also horribly written. I think the biggest issue is the exposition.
I'm more excited for this show than I've been for anything in a long time. So far, everything I've seen looks good to me except that Bumi scene, the earth bending looks wonky ash in that scene and so does he, though, I guess maybe that's fitting for him lmaoo. Regardless, I'm super excited to watch this and I'm very open to things changing in the show considering I've seen the original at least hundreds of times already, still never gets old
I don't know I think the Earthbending by Bumi was as good as it can in live action, because the actor is playing a 112 year old man lol so it may look wonky by him. Bumi's body doesn't know it is 112 lol so that kind of character is tough to do in live action. This is my observation of course not a proven fact.
The haters only have a problem with it because they want it to be a shot-by-shot remake. Like of course it’s not going to be an exact replica. I personally don’t want it do be a replica because that would be boring to me. I’m all for the show to add new things! As long as they don’t get rid of important characters, then I don’t mind.
I dislike it because they admitted to throwing out a key portion of sokka's character. His entire story arc is learning to respect women, its a great message. Now he's likely just comedic relief. This is already a telling sign of the rest of the show. "Misogony is bad" yeah like no shi.... it's like they didn't even watch the show. ANYONE who has seen all the episodes can tell you how important sokka being a woman hater at the beggining of the show is to sokkas character, there will be no sokka.... just a guy making jokes. There will be no learning how to respect women for who they are.... it just already is. It's fake. It's not based in reality.... not even based on the character arc of the character they're trying to portray.... Im not saying this will ruin it.... but its a bad sign. You take 1/3 of the main cast..... remove 50% of what made them who they were....... and now no development or learning can come.... no moral of the story.... Just a shot for shot ATLA..... with no depth..... I wan't it to be different.... but guess what's kind of ironic..... you saying people are gonna be mad because it isnt the exact replica.... yet it will be.... just without the depth.... which will make it awful. Let me ask you this.... did one piece do private screenings days before release for publicity? no. Why? because one pieces original creator was working with them... nothing was removed.... At least no MAIN STORY ARCS...... my favorite character is now just some guy who wont learn.... is stupid.... and has no bending abilites.... they disrespected the character in every way possible, because "we thought some of the jokes were a bit dated.." its a kids show.... that kids still watch.... its not like he's running around calling the women around him "Wh0res".... its literally to teach young boys how to respect women.... and gives reasons why women are great.... But nope.... jokes are "dated" i guess... LMFAO imagine thinking the show is gonna be good when the creators themselves left. LOLOL... again ironically because they wanted to change some ideas and make it fresh.... instead of doing a shot for shot live action remake... ironic.
@@IWantaMinecraftCape The weird thing about your rant is that no one ever said that they throw this out. The actress of Katara only mentioned that they toned it down which can mean next to anything.
@@IWantaMinecraftCape The only wild thing is your braindead logic. You can just go cry and fuck youself somewhere else with all your haters friends. these kinda people will make the next season canceled. and we certainly DO NOT want that happen.
I just want it to bee awesome dude, honestly we had been waiting for so long that I dont mind see things in a more mature and realistic tone as long as they respect the source material (until certain degree at least). I´m very hyped about this!
Look, I get you want this show to be successful, both for your channel's sake, as well as to be in Netflix's good graces for more premiere invites, but to give that little of criticism for this episode is so dishonest/coping. Acting was a 5/10 at BEST for most characters outside of Zuko and Sokka, writing was more stiff than the cartoon's pilot, and you can feel some pacing issues already. I wasn't expecting a 1 for 1 adaptation, nor was I expecting everything to be perfect, but come on... There are great parts about the show too, don't get me wrong (ie. World building, sets, bending, most effects), but to say people are gonna fall in love with this show is delusional. If I showed my friend who hadn't seen the original, they would think its trash... TLDR, don't let your desire for the show to be good keep you from making valid criticisms, which this first episode deserves its fair share of.
I'm sure the channel has it's good days. But like the show, it has been a hit or miss in the past several months with the guy drooling over Netflix. EVERYONE wants the show to succeed, even with low expectations. (Who Doesn't??) Now with the series out, devout fans of the cartoon are obviously in some ways, compare it to the source material with it being an adaptation after all. It doesn't even have to be perfect- some additions are good, yes- yet some changes are so detrimental to the pace and structure of plot/ character development I wonder why they even added/ changed them. I went into it with an open mind, I don't care for a shot-for-shot remake at all, not trying to watch it as an adaptation from the beloved cartoon, but as a fun show in itself- and I can say 40% of the series is entertaining enough, and the rest I'd rather have it play in the background while I focus on something else. It's fair to say that when the channel continues to cope on every bad decisions that's been made for of the rest of the series then it's clear where his intentions lie. Every die-hard fan has their own opinions regarding how well it is adapted, it is definitely better than the 2010, but confidently saying 90% of people will love this one reeks of Lake Laogai intervention. Will have to see what the channel will cover on the next video. Probably the clash of reviews regarding the series and his thoughts on it (hopefully after watching the rest of the series). Probably gathering more info on what people are saying and the heat to dissipate.
@@CesarR1037 I think looks-wise, and even w/ voices sometimes, the casting is amazing.Child actors are hard to come by too, and most of the time they tend to follow scripts word-for-word, which more veteran actors know not to do for better conversational flow
@@bradlynnarts "Lake Laogai intentions" 🤣That's great. But yeah I agree. And of course, if that's how he actually feels about the show then power to you. But being someone Netflix actually listens to would give him the opportunity to make valid criticism/be a voice for fans, so I wish he was more objective. We will see how that develops though.
Idk what you were shown, but you clearly had rose-tinted glasses or something. I couldn't find the light since all they showed me were shades of darkness in that 1st episode. The least amount od darkness I could notice was that the show has top tier effects and visuals on top of good casting and, technically, it is indeed following the plot. But that is pretty much the bare minimum nowadays. So far I give it a 6/10. I'm not sad. Just disappointed.
that iroh quote at the end still hits hard. thanks for the video, i'm now 5x more excited to watch this on netflix when it comes out, rewatching the original series a few months ago has me hyped up for this!!
You can have an open mind all you want but they went the cheap route and tried to make a show for everyone. A show for everyone is a show for no one! Its not the actors fault they did the best they could. This is not a good live action and hopefully one day we hardcore loyal ATLA fans will get a proper and faithful rendition of this beloved story. Until then we have this bs… please dislike the netflix live action show so we dont have to see more seasons bastardize The Last Airbender😢
The guy needing 2 punches to break up the earth honestly makes sense. Not every bender should be good enough to break up the earth like it's legos (that easily)
not what he meant bro. after he lifts the rocks in the air, he punches twice to send them forward with the first punch barely moving the rocks, and the second punch actually sending them forward. look closely you'll see
@@eliashriki2775 no I see that but the is a martial arts reason for that, even in real martial arts there is a style where you throw a prep punch first to cock your dominant arm back for the real punch. Why is everyone so damn nitpicky for no reason??
Nah bro. First episode is so weak, as an ATLA fan, I can’t just ignore the blatant flaws - first and foremost being the actual writing… which is sinful for ATLA seeing as the source material was masterclass. There are good parts, but when the first five minutes make me want to turn off the tv, it’s hard to defend it. Example, and actually think about it: opening shot is in “Capital City” - what, is it so hard to just say Ba Sing Se? Or is it Caldera, the Fire Nation’s capital? We see an earth kingdom bender fight fire nation - cool - and proceed to try to use the same bending move like four times in a row and get interrupted because it has a huge counter window with no super armor. From there, we see Firelord Sozin exposition dump onto the prisoner for no real reason except for the audience’s benefit… and I guess validation from the prisoner? The acting is kinda cringe, the dialogue is super cringe - I feel like there had to have been a better way of setting up the story than what they went with.
I loved the way u described everything u felt during the episode and the templance u have to transmit that to your audience, i have big hopes with the show and u made me feel way better prepared to watch it with a more open mind, keep the work up! And thanks!
I really appreciate your videos. they give me a lot of hope for the show, especially with all the events that unfolded over the years of production. I can't wait to watch it
After the 1st episode I can only say this. Complete fail in Directing and script! Very poor work! Reminds me of a Movie just with better actors and better Visual graphics. Do not want to troll people who love it. Everything is explained instantly without introduction or mystery with zero time given to the actors to develop characters or introduce something from the past. Very very mediocre script and directing. Just horrible. Way to go on taking something beautiful and turning it into a pile o f bullshit.
I like the honest review and letting people know it’s not shot for shot. I’m excited hearing your review of it. Can’t wait!!! You’ve gained a subscriber.
6:35 Still at least looks cool. At least it isn't a whole 5-10 man squad of earth benders doing a 10 move sequence to have a small rock float at 1mph towards nowhere. If you know what I'm talking about, you know.
Thanks for this great review. I’m so happy you got to go to the premier; you deserved it! Seeing the photos of you just cheesin’ on the “red” carpet was perfect.
Sounds like it's going to be good. And seriously, I don't mind it being slightly different from the original. There are just some things you get in cartoons that are just very hard or impossible to translate into live action, even with CGI. So, yea, looking forward to the first episode. Got my tea (had to go with camomile because I couldn't find any jasmine) and my Iroh holding a cup pop vinyl already to watch it.
It looks incredibly faithful, I thought this was going to be a spit in the face of the original but so far it looks damn near 1-1. I will be watching day 1 it looks incredible.
It was an abomination. First two episodes I was like ok, not SO bad. Then It got worse and worse and worse. There were glimpses of nice moments that were not in original series but they were few and far between.
I think that Bumi shot is fine. The only thing that feels off about it to me is how slow Aang's slowmo backflip over it goes. But I honestly feel like they probably slowed it down extra for the promo so that the words would be readable. If the final shot is faster, but still slightly slowmo, like the cartoon shot, I think it'll be fine.
Here’s how I look at the show. I see it as the show but someone adding their own twist to it and shooting off in a different direction. It’s like someone making a hamburger and then you make your own hamburger with different ingredients same base but with your own twist.
I'm SO excited for Feb 22, and I'm also so glad you had such an amazing time! ❤️ The premiere sounded amazing. Nice to know they are still tweaking the effects as well to give us the best possible end product on release day!!
I loved how they combined storylines that worked well together, like Jet in Omashu, The cave as well, the forest spirit combined with the journey to Roku. Loved it and went into it with an open mind
I don't mind it so far, finished episode two, how it's playing it out, to me the only thing that falls flat are the main actors and actresses, it very much feels like reading scripts and lacks depth and passion in their words. I don't know if it's the script that gives no depth or the actors themselves just not feeling it.
Binged it overnight. Overall the show is pretty good. I don't mind some of the changes they did. it's only 8 episodes so they had to compress the storylines a bit. That said, I think they should've made it like a 12 - 15 episode season. I know that'd be a bit long for Netflix standards, but with what we were given I think fans would be 100% satisfied if just a few more episodes were invested. They would've been able to successfully capture the essence of the animated version. The final episode is the Northern tribe invasion and was compressed too much, that one should've at been a 2 episode story.
I mean there a few times in the last battle with ozi alone where aang is doing multiple movements or none at all with bending happening people seem to forget that the issue is the movie was so egregious with how many movements. 90% of the bending does follow the motion but there have been times in the animated series where that wasnt the case.
The original is better in every single aspect than this one. And the most crystal clear reason for it, is that this new piece of content can't be enjoyed amd sometimes even understood without the original. Everything is rushed and unearned, the character motivations are show in 5 seconds through verbal exposition. This show is only marginally better than the other live action.
I agree with everything except for the last part. While this show is mediocre and the script is just bad, the movie was so so so bad that is was an offense to the intellectual property
Didn’t get to finish the first episode as my wife fell asleep. Sokka’s character was so great. I am worried that they are going to change Zuko a lot. In the cartoon he was attempting to restore his honor. In the show he had a line that seems to be changing his motive. Which draws concern from me.
Lets be honest, this live action is mid. Visuals: amazing, world: amazing, actors: lots of amateur acting from some of the cast which is reasonable but Zuko is amazing. But narrative, writing? It's terrible. 4/10.
Not impressed by the direction...make Zuko a sadist and make soka angry young man..the director didn't try to create any emotional connection between te caracter.. looks like he's in a hurry to complete the episodes
but the other guy said sokkas comedic timing was not that good, particularly when aang finds gyatsos remains, sokka supposedly makes a joke right after
Bumi was TERRIBLE bro! He's AWFUL! They basically made a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT Bumi... I don't think they did very good here... They changed way too much and didn't make the changes good either... Idk that this is going to be a very good version. My daughter hates it already. My wife and I are TRYING to give it a chance. It's just sooooo different and I don't think this storyline is very good... We've really got to get past the hype bro... God bless
Great review! You and Antoine are my favorite world of Avatar content creators. You looked just like another celebrity on that "yellow" carpet. 😅 I can't wait to watch it!
I don't get why CGI looked better 20 years ago, all of these scenes look fake af yet edoras, helms deep, rivendell, weathertop, etc all look stunning and real and when you visit those places irl they look weird with out the location actually being there.
I’m the first to always rush here immediately a notification pops up I think we should expect an awesome series the casts are perfect for this show Edit: I deserve some likes 😢🎉❤
The problem with grangran was that they reduced her to an exposition dumb and removed any emotional scenes with her. Spoiler She didnt even see the children off to their adventure.
The open mind is key. If you go into it looking for issues, you will find them.

Gordon did such an incredible job showing his range of emotions. I remember he said in a recent interview that he wants to portray Aang as a fun and goofy 12 year old, but still show emotion as he has a lot of heavy responsibility and knowing the Air Nomads are wiped out.. so he wants to show both sides of Aang 😌
I’m looking forward to how each of the cast will take these beloved characters and make it into their own, but still capture the personalities that fans adore 😁

6:33 if you pay attention, the first punch aligns the rocks and the second throw them, so if you are really REALLY nitpicky, everything is alright

(And Last Airbender is my favorite cartoon!)
So I am just looking forward to enjoying this season and hope it does well enough for us to get into the meat of the story with the later seasons.
But season 1 was laying the groundwork to make the next seasons awesome
I felt like they did season one for kids, but when they were creating season two they realized the only way they could do the story correctly was to make it more edgy, more for adults.
@@brianewing5778 naw
Wow what a hot take. Why don’t you just copy and paste what everyone else says
Same. I felt like S1 was a kid's show. It does laid the groundwork but they still got fixed it in S2. S2 and S3 were the best seasons easily.
U could say the same with the last airbender there are no excuses for error and mistakes

I think the darker take on the world of avatar isn’t an issue. I actually liked that its taking itself more seriously than the cartoon, especially for us fans who loved peak moments in book three. To me it had the same tone to it that book 3 had.
Things I liked
- Sozin tricking the earth bender. Yeah we never thought why nobody sent backup if they knew a war was brewing. Using a false message as a distraction makes sense, and Zak parallels it later by using the siege at the North as a distraction while really he’s taking Omashu
- Realism .
I was BAWLING
- Unpopular opinion: but I like this Katara.
I also thought SuKka had good chemistry, they were cute :)
- I like the angle they’re taking with the role of the Avatar, why he’s truly important to the people ultimate weapon aside.
Until we got to Bumi
- Another unpopular opinion: I thought the take on secret tunnel with Katara and Sokka, and the hint being reinterpreted as love (but also opening that to all forms of life, not just romantic) that guides them through the dark and it talking about badgermoles is a fresh take that blew my mind.
That stuff HIT
- leaves from the vine piano vrs. - ‘nough said *tearbends furiously*
- Earth nation solider having beef with Iroh.
- Cabbage Guy
- The fact Ozai seen to genuinely believe his BS about prosperity, and that love is a weakness. idk if in this they made Ursas loss a big thing for him or not and that’s why he’s so closed off, cz him faking his love for Zuko is actually so much crueler than the cartoon.
I read through it all bro, and I agree with you on your unpopular opinions, so we might not be so unpopular after all!

Its hard to believe that a personal invite to such event wont make u be objective to how the performances and changes were truly perceived
Here's to hoping for the best!
oh man i feel sorry for you
I love how pure of a fan you are. Thank you so much for giving us this insight. I can’t wait to watch the series!
Reading from a script netflix provided him makes him a pure fan? 😂

@@bionic3500What r u on about?
My thoughts exactly. I couldn't have said it better myself
The way you said the iroh quote at the end. Goosebumps 😮❤
You are still my best youtuber for anythinf ATLA. No other youtuber ever compares. I have literally beem waiting for you since the premier and I watched your video 16 mins after upload. PS: It is 2AM here
So TL;DR: It wasn't Shyamalized, so calm down errybody.
Well, it arrived. And it absolutely stinks. Yeah, its better than the shamalamadingdong film, but that's not a hard thing to accomplish.
I personally just have issues with Katara in the show. I feel like she cant act, as if every line is said with 0 emotion. I also feel like she becomes too good of a waterbender for no good reason really. Zuko was my favourite, such a great performance! Ang is doing great too considering how hard that role is.
You could not have worded this video any better!!! I could feel your love and excitement for the new series, and amazing words of wisdom too!!
There are some other examples as well, and most of them come from Earthbending IIRC.
my main issue with the show is just the writing, its super expository and feels super weird tonally
Mmhh... this sounds to me that they paid for your opinion.
either with actual money and or with the VIP treatment he got. Want to believe it was unconsciously though
This is my observation of course not a proven fact.
it's like watching the original show for the first time all over again 🔥🔥
@@f.carasind4188 I’ve seen multiple clips of them saying stuff about “the old sokka” literally. wtf they mean by that?

7:03 and the uncle iroh quote at the end 🤌🏼👏🏼
My only real complaint about episode one was the lack of penguin sledding 🤷♂️. I loved it.
I just want it to bee awesome dude, honestly we had been waiting for so long that I dont mind see things in a more mature and realistic tone as long as they respect the source material (until certain degree at least). I´m very hyped about this!
When they called him Aang that instantly made it better than the movie
Wow! I have some tears in my eyes from the hype. Thursday can't get here fast enough.
Thank you! I love your Iroh quote at the end btw. Really made it feel special!
Agreed. I think the first episode was great but slowly got worse. You’re 100% correct on the pacing issues. The casting was pretty good though.
I'm sure the channel has it's good days. But like the show, it has been a hit or miss in the past several months with the guy drooling over Netflix.
EVERYONE wants the show to succeed, even with low expectations. (Who Doesn't??)
Now with the series out, devout fans of the cartoon are obviously in some ways, compare it to the source material with it being an adaptation after all.
Completely agree. The first episode was the best and that’s not saying a lot…
I felt no chemistry between the main actors. Felt flat to me.
Love the review, and thanks for making it very spoiler free! And I’m glad to see you had a fun time at the event! 😍 🌊🌎🔥 🌬️
Same
story was extremely rush
that iroh quote at the end still hits hard. thanks for the video, i'm now 5x more excited to watch this on netflix when it comes out, rewatching the original series a few months ago has me hyped up for this!!
How do you not address how fucking trash the writing is?
yes this, seems like he got too hyped on the premier to think straight
@@CesarTreetopspaid off prolly
I hope this review was a joke, you are way off. This show sucks so bad I'm so disappointed.

I cried while you were talking about aang calling for appa imagine how it'll be when I actually watch it
I really appreciate your videos. they give me a lot of hope for the show, especially with all the events that unfolded over the years of production.
Fr 😂
I think he was making the rocks harder and sharper then throwing them out not 2 punches. Which is insane detailing
Whats also great is that the maker's of the show asked for reviewers to be honest and give criticisms so they can improve the show.
It looks incredibly faithful, I thought this was going to be a spit in the face of the original but so far it looks damn near 1-1. I will be watching day 1 it looks incredible.
I was really really pleased with the first episode. Felt all the emotions. The creators did something so beautiful. Ian was perfect. Zuko was epic too
“I can’t wait to watch this video”
Background music from Parasyte: The Maxim in this video. Love it!!
Pretty it’s lo fi re zero?

@@CesarTreetops or he’s a shill behind the scenes
I don't mind it so far, finished episode two, how it's playing it out, to me the only thing that falls flat are the main actors and actresses, it very much feels like reading scripts and lacks depth and passion in their words. I don't know if it's the script that gives no depth or the actors themselves just not feeling it.
I don't understand why anyone would want a shot-for-shot remake. There would be no point for it to even exist at all.
I know I'm going to tear up once the song starts....or maybe the entire show. 😊
You’re giving me hope, dude. I am so excited!!!
I mean there a few times in the last battle with ozi alone where aang is doing multiple movements or none at all with bending happening people seem to forget that the issue is the movie was so egregious with how many movements. 90% of the bending does follow the motion but there have been times in the animated series where that wasnt the case.
Exactly!
Great video keep it up you're doing amazing things 😁👍
God bless
I do not understand why they cannot make this series the correct way.
I do not understand why no live adaption can follow source material
Great review!
You and Antoine are my favorite world of Avatar content creators. You looked just like another celebrity on that "yellow" carpet. 😅
I can't wait to watch it!
The show is pretty mediocre.
I don't get why CGI looked better 20 years ago, all of these scenes look fake af yet edoras, helms deep, rivendell, weathertop, etc all look stunning and real and when you visit those places irl they look weird with out the location actually being there.
I’m the first to always rush here immediately a notification pops up I think we should expect an awesome series the casts are perfect for this show

The problem with grangran was that they reduced her to an exposition dumb and removed any emotional scenes with her.
