Classic Metallica Tones With Mesa/Boogie Mark IV

- Now that I have thousands of studio hours under my belt, and my engineering skills have finally caught up to my childhood fantasies (haha!), I thought it would be fun to see how close I could come to some of the classic Metallica tones with my beloved Mark IV. Obviously they’re not going to be exact, considering that literally everything is different (player, guitar, pickups, cables, cabinets, rooms, recording equipment and medium, etc.). But since those tones came from Mesa Mark series amps, and I have a lot of the same (or similar) gear, I wanted to give it a shot since these guitar sounds are a big part of what started my love affair with recording in the first place.
I also recorded a quick riff from Theocracy’s “Wishing Well” with each of the three tones, both because I thought it would be cool to hear my own riffs with these tones, and because it seemed useful to have the same part played through all three sounds for comparison’s sake.
Everything is played through the same Mesa/Boogie Mark IV head, with an EQ in the loop. No pedals or anything, just guitar straight into amp. I wanted to show the huge difference that different cabinets and speakers + different microphones + engineer’s ears make, even with the same guitar and amp. There’s no impulses or software EQ matching or any of that nonsense; I simply tried to get as close as I could by ear. Again, of course it’s not exact, but I think I got fairly close and I certainly had fun doing it. I hope you get a kick out of it as well! :)

This guy actually downpicks. Fuck yeah.
danman77220 Same here man!
Using Down-and-up picking for Downpicking parts is sacrilegious.
well if it sounds good we dont give a shit
and now imagine layering four guitars with that tone
asmo_192 mindblown

Exactly, the infamous "wall of guitars"
ptschafer Man, i love that sound. It's so heavy and tight.
@@thalamusDecimation nothing like megadeth
that black album tone is the BEST ONE IVE EVER HEARD
iodinesoul it's still extremely scooped, I pull out the mids completely with the EQ on the Mark IV and it's still not as scooped as the black album, you need additional eq to pull out more mids to get the black album sound.
The Black Album have mid range pretty close to Ride the lightning, still, when we talk about those Mid ranges they are scooped still, not even Slayer dear to scoop like Metallica
And justice for all has the best tone in my opinion like shortest straw and is to live is to die.
yeah and justice has the sickest tone, i used to think the black album had the best tone but that was when i was 7 nd had yet to play guitar
I have a peavey VIP 2
If some can help me with this it would much appreciated..
I wanted a justice and for all tone
A master of puppets tone
A black album tone
A death magnetic tone
I would pay someone 500 dollars to do this because it is hard to find these tones but I am only 14.
Proving once again that Hetfield has the best right hand in Metal ever.
Robert Frias seriously it’s all in the picking as soon as I saw his picking I knew it would never come close no matter how close the amp tone is
Chris Adler >>>
And what about kirk?
enter sandman sounded almost identical
berthemoose they all did!
berthemoose yes, i think i'll buy this amp one day, im very fan from Metallica, specially from James, he inspires me to keep pushing like a rythim guitarrists (i want to be lead but, i think un not ready, but i want to make solos, i also want to have fun with the wah pedal)
Wow. It does
Fucking beautiful tone man
bakerXderek Oh shit waddup
holy shit wassup fam
I keep seeing you in all the videos I watch. Pretty awesome. You have good taste in vids haha. chhheah!
bakerXderek CHEAH!
bakerXderek cheaah!
these are really bloody close, good work!
You should show us how you dialed in these tones
agreed
It’s pretty easy with about any Mark series Boogie.
@@deasnutz4ever that's not what my Mk III++ says, especially when throwing in a PEQ. They call Mk's tweakers amps for a reason. You can get a million different metal tones.

And justice for all sounded so perfect I love it so much
Definitely bro!
ohhh fuck me, that And justice for all tone is everything!!
Danjoker
the giant hrrrnng that is sad but trues tone kills justice
the hammer of justice crushes you and you sad tone. lol
ArmorWolves gaming
at least the black album tone has bass
song-writing quality > production quality
Danjoker i didnt say anything about the songwriting, this is solely about the guitar tone. what im saying is that the black album tone is better than the justice tone
Ajfa tone was badass! Loved when you played Dyers Eve
MackdiddleGaming really nice

Lukas Zylka I don't think it is
SkorpionPlays - Destiny i have The Original Tab book at Home, it really is! :)
Lukas Zylka the tab book is false
Lukas Zylka Hetfield himself said It's 2222, they play 2222 live, and It's unmistakably 2222 from the isolated Guitar track. 2323 came from the official Tab book that got that wrong back in the 80s i think.
The Master of Puppets tone was great. Not exactly spot on, but the tone is literally what my ideal dream tone is. Scooped, yet barky in the high mids. Love it man, keep rocking!
Thanks! Yeah that one was tricky since James used passive pickups on that album and I used the same guitar with an EMG 57 for all the Metallica stuff, so it will never have quite the same upper-mid bark (in addition to all the other variables listed). Glad you liked, though!
TheocracyMatt probably would've sounded closer if you used an 81 especially on the AJFA and black album tones. Great vids btw!
TheocracyMatt He used Gibson 1984 explorers,Jackson JS32 king V and his old Gibson V for the recording of Master Of Pupets.
NOT
@@user-sl1ht4fr2d not a js32, they have bolt on necks, his was neck through. Also not a Gibson V it was an Electra
Great tone man!
Tones are practically spot on. Nice work.
That black album tone.. damn! Impressive!
Matt, these tones are soooo close. Amazing! Love the new album btw. Been a Theocracy fan for many years.
Keep these videos coming matt! they are awesome!
This is actually so darn cool, Matt. You should definitely do more videos like these where you jam out to your influences. I absolutely adore some of the tones you get, and the new album was arguably the best in terms of production. Killer Dyers Eve by the way, that was always my favorite from that record.
Man, your tone is always just so killer
Wow, you pretty much nailed it here. Black and Puppets especially. I haven't really spent enough time playing with the Mark 4. I have gotten Puppets-ish tone with my Mark IIB and a Marshall 1960a cab. Not exact and certainly not as close as yours, but you could say in the same spirit.
Inner child overjoyed! Simply brilliant. I second the comments about sharing how you dialed in the tones, mostly with the Mark IV since everyone's using dif DAWs and gear.
I'd say you're as close to the real thing as it gets without using an impulse or EQ matching of any sort
Holy SHIT, man! You did your due diligence here, & absolutely rocked those tones (& riffs) with precision & attention to detail! Bravo, really. Exemplary work!
Beautiful, fantastical-magical. LOVED the color choices for the Guits...
Your tones are much better. Nice vid. Thanks for posting!
dude that was clean as🤘
Amazing,Matt! God bless!
Dude, you killed it! So awesome.
Nice job! Excited to hear the new disc this week!

You play all those riffs perfectly!
awesome video man!!
Yes! Tone is great, playing spot on!!! Good job man!
Got to say that the Mark IV is problaly my fav. mark amp
Woa awesome bro you killed it! Matt... I knew when I first heard your music you were undoubtedly influenced by bands like Metallica, especially in Theocracy’s galloping riffs like Hetfields. Of course making them completely your own... love it man!!! And adding such a spiritual depth in a very unique and powerful way... I can only applaud your musicianship creativity and exemplary integrity. Thanks for the great music brotha! Keep doing what you’re doing!
Why you don't show your setting on Amp Mesa and Eq in the loop? What Mics did you used and Cab and Hp?
Dude that was awesome man. Nice playing
You are one clean and precise rhythm guitar player. You got great chops too.
Sounds perfect man!!!
Awesome work dude. You nailed it. Many youtubers want to reach the "Metallica sound" but don't get to it. You reached the goal. Keep on rocking
Great playing man!
the mix sounds awesome! the right drum sound definately helps!!
Such a nice amp. Great playing as well mate!
...And Jam Tracks For All i think he plays with a software app like bias effects or bias tone but if not I agree with you 😊
what a great sound!
Sounds awesome man!
Excellent tone, and your playing is very clean and tight!
Absolutly the best sound of Metallica..Awesome work study for best sound!

Dang dude, you killed it!
Black Album and MOP sounded nailed on to me, your rhythm playing is superb too, awesome video :)
This is what I needed
I think that the tones are really close because he played them really tight and right and they are dialed correctly.
Awesome!!!🤘
That was extremely impressive, holy crap
Very accurate! This made me smile for sure.

You look like Cliff Burton.

Ara Nalbandian are you handing me the pick of destiny???
Spot on my friend! Holy sheeet
Theocracy Matt! You just gained another fan! I'll be checking out Theocracy's discography!
Great job!
Τhis is SO helpful , especially these days everyone is digging into Metallica prods to search for the "right sound" light !!
nice tones!!!!
great job!!
What a beast! No surprise that Metallica is a shared favorite. I have the ATWB shirt you signed for me. Matt. The "M" for Matt looks a bit jagged...reminds me of a certain logo ;)
Nice. The tones on the Black Album (especially in "Sad But True") are probably some of my favorite tones from any album, but of course I like the composition of Master and Justice better. You got so close to those tones - makes me wish I had a Mark IV. I had a Triple Rec but foolishly sold it because I couldn't figure out how to dial in a good tone (my first tube amp :D). Very cool to see the composer/vocalist for my top favorite band playing riffs from my second favorite band. Love the new album BTW. It's still a sensory overload when I play it.
awsome playing
Incredible!
wooo that master of puppets sound !!! I loved watching you play dyers eve ! I remember trying and failing to play it when I was younger, I should definitely give it a try now.
DON'T FORGET GUYS, TONE IS IN THE HANDS EVEN THOUGH HIS GUITARS SOUND EXACTLY LIKE ON THE ALBUM
Absolute 🔥 bro.
awesome man!
How could this get any thumbs down?! This was awesome!
You really need to share your secret EQ fórmula so we can finally sound like Metallica Matt!
ducking awesome!!!
Killer sounds, sick playing, excellent video. What more can i say?
I really like you "And justice for all" tone!
Awesome mate! Enjoyed the Dyers Eve!
Jesus, that's some bomb ass tone.
I love and hate these videos at the same time. I love them because the tones are spot on and I hate them because they never show you how to dial in the tone >:(
Man just discovering your channel. Wish I had half of your rhythm skills or half of your ability to dial tones... or half of your gear!
Great jobs man
DAMN!!!! I WANT this sound!!!! :)
Wow you really nailed it
Excellent
Very nice sound!
Fantastic!
