Re peanuts and inflammation: This is complicated and I didn’t mean to diminish Nina’s personal experience. The word inflammation is triggering for a lot of health care professionals because it is so often misused/overused by people when discussing their diet. As for the feedback I’m getting: 1. All foods affect different people differently. But most nutrition professionals will agree that “Inflammation” is an incredibly overused and misused word in wellness communities. It’s absolutely a real thing but often used inappropriately (or to describe poorly understood phenomenon/ catch all symptoms), and I was trying to make a point based on an actual evidence based definition of inflammation. 2. You’re right officially classified as a legume, but nutritionally they are more similar to nuts and seeds 3. Peanuts actually have a relatively favourable omega ratio compared to a lot of other nuts or seeds (or legumes if we’re being technical ). Also you may be able to say” an excess of omega 6s is inflammatory” but we can’t reduce whole foods to nutrients in a vacuum like that. And peanuts contain a wide range of other beneficial anti inflammatory compounds which is why I think we want to avoid demonizing them based on one compound they contain of many. My goal was to prevent unnecessary food fear around a generally nutritious food (hence my comment that it’s not UNIVERSALLY inflammatory) but yes of course everyone will have different experiences with different foods.

Unfortunately almost no fishing is sustainable or accessable with the current state of the world's oceans. Seaspiracy is just a documentary with it's own flaws but that doesn't dismiss heaps of scientific evidence of lack of sustainability. If you are interested in learning about the sustainability of the fishing industry seek information from a scientist in the field...not a dietitian. No hate just saying.

@@sikrijo Very dependent on what country you're from and what species you're eating. If you're eating an invasive freshwater fish that's probably good, or a fish from a multi-trophic aquaculture system (eg fish from rice paddies) that is often also fine. However most of the sustainable freshwater species are going to be carp or catfish so are less appetising for Western consumers.
@@sikrijo In addition to what Fenella Deans said, freshwater bodies have significantly less global coverage compared to the world's oceans so if we were to shift towards freshwater species overfishing would occur much more quickly. However, due to the increased ability to regulate fishing of inland water bodies this is less likely in countries with proper regulations. The other concern is pollution and runoff, many of our lakes and rivers which were previously used for aquaculture were fished to depletion and do not meet water quality standards which make these organisms safe for consumption. This is most evident in the U.S. with regards to the history of the freshwater shellfish industry.
Hi Abbey - just curious what your thoughts are on Built Bar using the phrase “zero guilt” on their packaging? I know you have said in previous videos (including in the title of this particular video) that there are no “guilty” or “bad” foods. I personally think that’s a dangerous narrative to have with food, and interesting that you’d accept a sponsorship from a company who uses these phrases so prominently in their marketing and packaging. Thanks - I really like your videos, they’re so informative! Xx
Speaking of smart sweets I did exactly that. I forgot how much fiber they had and ate the entire bag while studying throughout the day. You think as a dietetic student I would have realized the consequences but I eat plant based and get a lot of fiber naturally so I thought nothing of it. Until I had to run errands and let’s say my body did not approve of the high fiber lol
I can´t agree with you on this one. This is the first celebrity what I eat in a day that looks like a normal person´s diet, plus I love Nina and her vibe is so fresh
My therapist made me stop drinking coffee ): apparently I'm really sensitive to stimulants.. After I cut it out it seriously reduced the severity of my anxiety and depression. But I still miss it. 😂
Decaf! I’m in the same boat. I’m much better off without caffeine, but I could never give up coffee entirely. Fuck everyone who hates on decaf- they’ve never been given the decision of decaf or nothing.
Same! I keep mini cans of coke on hand for when I have migraines but other than that I drink decaf only. I cried when I realized they weren't making caffeine free Coke anymore. I hope it'll come back eventually.
Right there with ya, friend. I have terrrrrrible panicky symptoms if I drink caffeinated coffee. I even cut back on my caffeinated tea intake. I rely heavily on fruits throughout the day, and short outdoor walks to boost my energy. When I’m starting to “crash,” I know it’s time for an apple and a 10 min walk, and it’s harddddd to drag myself to do it sometimes, but it works.
Nina has a pretty normal diet in my books. I also don’t eat gluten because I find I feel better and have more energy when I don’t. I also don’t eat dairy much as I find it’s better for my skin. Whilst food freedom is important, some people choose to not eat foods because it feels better for them that way. Whilst demonising foods for all is bad, it is also bad to demonise those who find better health in choosing to eat this way.
Same here! I am a Canadian with Eastern European background like Nina who feels similarly impacted by gluten, dairy, peanuts, and the not-stated-but-implied sugar (I love fish, though!). This looks like a pretty good spread to me, though I would probably need a bigger lunch with some more protein, as Abbey suggests.
I could never get on the almond butter hype. The taste just doesn’t do it for me so I always stuck with peanut butter. Glad to know it really isn’t bad like so many make it seem!
Can you review one of Nisha's (Rainbow Plant Life) videos? Maybe the "I ate like a King on just $5 a day" video? I feel like she has a lot of interesting recipes and one of the only vegan YT whose diet I actually would want to adopt 😅. She's not afraid of oil or seasoning.
I always crave all the donuts during my cycle. My boyfriend always buys me donuts during that time. I have enough discomfort with the fibroids so I am not going to deny myself something that makes me feel some what better even if it is for a moment.
Maybe she means that peanut gives her inflammation because it gives her heartburn. I love peanuts but I can’t even eat a pbj sandwiches because of the heartburn it gives me 😩
Yeah, I was thinking that maybe she means it gives her digestive issues? Because that happens to me, I like peanuts, but even eating a small portion causes indigestion, something that doesn’t happen with almonds or other nuts.
But, tbh. The industry AT LARGE is in fact unsustainable. There's only small fishers in the industry that do it sustainable... Like sure it doesn't expell much CO2 but if we keep fishing the oceans empty we will also have low O2 lmao
Yes, sugar does not need to be synonymous with guilt, but sugar is also not good for your teeth and I get the feeling that it's a bigger concern when saying it's guilt free. I know it is for me :)
As someone in sobriety, my go to answer should be team dessert. But I still love a sweet drink at the end of the day. Instead of wine (or whiskey in my case), it's ginger beer, zevia, and/or flavored seltzers
I’m so glad she brought up industrial fishing. Animal ag is horrible in general. I’m sure the efforts of her buddy’s Paul & Ian trying to help the environment will help her explore plant based sooner than later. ☺️
I’m sorry, but some people are likely to experience flare ups in inflammation (Or gout, like my stepdad) eating some foods, regardless of what science says should happen. Allergies are just as individual, and very common, and I’m sure science would say differently when we are talking general consumption.
@@AbbeysKitchen I saw the note, but if someone can’t read it (blind, sight limited or aren’t fluent reading English) then a note doesn’t help them. Just a thought.

@@katemunson1198 food policing in that way is also annoying. We shouldn't have to explain our food intolerances or allergies I'm great detail to people!
On the fisheries point - it is probably true that _some_ fish and seafood can be consumed sustainably. However, speaking personally, I do not want to spend ages thinking about the providence of my food or coming up with loads of complex 'allowed'/'not allowed' categories. Life is too short - it is simpler and less hassle to just set broad rules (e.g. 'I don't eat fish'). - Also, okay...so a selective fish diet is better than a non-selective vegan or vegetarian diet. But that's comparing apples and oranges. If you were to have a selective vegan diet (e.g. cut out higher carbon foods like soya and imported tropical fruit) what then? The issue with farmed fish is that you generally need to grow crops to feed them. - Just in general, you can make almost any diet sustainable if you are regimented about cutting out problematic foods (even a carnivore diet, if you ate exclusively roadkill and left-overs). But given that 99% of adherents are not going to do that, it's more illustrative to talk about the diet as a whole.
I would love some videos breaking down some of these documentaries out there. The amount of times I hear people change their diets / lifestyle because they watched one or more of these documentaries without digging deeper into the information.
I work in seafood and I get some customers that are turned off by frozen and/or farm raised. Even worse, some people order seafood and don't even show up to collect it.

When it comes to sustainability, I'm lucky that I grew up almost exclusively on fish that was harvested as a part of recreational fishing, including catching my own. Unfortunately it can be difficult to find extremely local seafood (aka crappie from my grandparent's backyard) at a supermarket and what is there is so poorly labelled it's even harder to make good choices. It would be nice if there was a way to connect local sport and recreational fishers with folks who might want some of their excess.
i have celiac disease and am lactose intolerant and now knowing she eats gluten and dairy free makes me love her even more and seeing someone else eating a similar diet as me just makes me feel good bc i’m not the only one
Despite potential problems with this documentary, there is no doubt about our severely depleted oceans and overwhelming issues with how it’s managed the world over. I’m not waiting for any more evidence and I’m erring on the safe side and drastically reduced my seafood consumption years ago (after watching another doc called End of the Line). I have other food options, some communities do not. Also, farmed salmon is terrible for the environment and native stocks. It’s not sustainable, for example it introduces parasites and requires large amounts of antibiotics to survive the close quarters. If eat salmon, it’s wild, and I eat it rarely.
Yeah this was a big red flag for me as well. I went to school and took multiple oceanography and sustainability courses in which professors would not consume fish. Almost no fishing of any kind is sustainable with the current state of the worlds oceans.
I wish this comment is seen by more people. I feel her saying the documentary is riddled with misinformation is a big claim without any evidence. She needs to do a video if she's going to make that big of a statement
Not only that but those small scale fisheries would immediately go depleted if everyone that currently supports large scale industrial fishing switched to that. There are too many people on our planet to ever have a sustainable way of fishing.
Would totally love to see a video just about seafood! I rarely eat seafood and when I do I try to buy companies that very obviously engage in sustainable practices. (e.g. Wild Planet)

It was not at all riddled with misinformation. The bottom line is that there are too many human beings on our planet to ever have a sustainable way of fishing. The only people upset with the documentary are those that want to turn a blind eye to their own dietary decisions and the consequences those decisions have on our planet.

I’m confused with her take on peanuts. It’s not that peanuts cause inflammation, but they can certainly cause bloating (on some people, like myself) which I believe are different issues....
Thank you for commenting on Seaspiracy! The anti-asian sentiment and the overall "gotcha" journalism style coupled with clever editing really undermined any potential points the documentary might have been trying to make

Abby could you make a video about antibiotics in meat/fish? I don’t know if it’s something to be very concerned about or if it’s just fear mongering, especially in the context of aquaculture
As someone who came from a farming family no animal is given antibiotics unless needed then they have to go through a withdrawal period before being allowed to be sold in general and after that there is an amount of time after at before they can be slaughtered. In addition any dairy animal whom is on antibiotics or any medication is pumped and dumped.
This podcast will kill you did a very good episode on antibiotic resistance and it touches a lot on antibiotic use in animal agriculture. It’s pretty US based though.

I think Nina was just saying that the peanuts cause her a small reaction, not that they are inflammatory to everyone. I love all types of nuts and think peanuts are great 👍
Thanks for mentioning that

@Manuela Jäger You're right, they are legumes. When they're not boiled/roasted, they are green and taste just like a legume. I've had it raw, they actually taste good.
I absolute agree with your second to last sentence. Just wondering what about fresh water fish?
I wish I could like this comment 50 times. I think people are so biased bcoz they want to keep eating seafood/meat without the inconvenience of feeling guilty and so they spread this misinfo
Yep! I found the oceanology episode of ologies very interesting. Basically farmed or wild caught fish…both really not great.

Xx
Money probably.
Of course she didn't reply
Speaking of smart sweets I did exactly that. I forgot how much fiber they had and ate the entire bag while studying throughout the day. You think as a dietetic student I would have realized the consequences but I eat plant based and get a lot of fiber naturally so I thought nothing of it. Until I had to run errands and let’s say my body did not approve of the high fiber lol
Oh no!
I can´t agree with you on this one. This is the first celebrity what I eat in a day that looks like a normal person´s diet, plus I love Nina and her vibe is so fresh

Decaf! I’m in the same boat. I’m much better off without caffeine, but I could never give up coffee entirely. Fuck everyone who hates on decaf- they’ve never been given the decision of decaf or nothing.
@@peacechickification same here. It’s decaf for me now.
I commented this before, but Julianne Hough next! You’ll roll your eyes so hard at her Harpers Bazaar.
Coming soon!
i completely agree, i watched hers when it came out and she had the most unrealistic diet
Honestly Nina's diet is the closest to mine from this series(minus the no fish part).

Same here! I am a Canadian with Eastern European background like Nina who feels similarly impacted by gluten, dairy, peanuts, and the not-stated-but-implied sugar (I love fish, though!). I’m sorry, but some people are likely to experience flare ups in inflammation (Or gout, like my stepdad) eating some foods, regardless of what science says should happen.
-
Also, okay...so a selective fish diet is better than a non-selective vegan or vegetarian diet. But that's comparing apples and oranges. If you were to have a selective vegan diet (e.g. cut out higher carbon foods like soya and imported tropical fruit) what then? The issue with farmed fish is that you generally need to grow crops to feed them.
-
Just in general, you can make almost any diet sustainable if you are regimented about cutting out problematic foods (even a carnivore diet, if you ate exclusively roadkill and left-overs). But given that 99% of adherents are not going to do that, it's more illustrative to talk about the diet as a whole.
Interesting, thank you for sharing your perspective on this topic
Apparently peanuts are high in Omega 6, hence the concern for inflammation.

How many people actually eat seafood from a sustainable small scale fishing?that's the problem.. .
On my list to do this!
While peanuts aren't inflammatory to most, they are to many. We are all different and the healthiest food in the world can still be inflammatory to someone
Yeah, seemed a little weird for Abbey to just be like “nope she’s wrong” when Nina said “it gives ME inflammation”
Exactly
Absolutely- all foods affect different people differently. But most nutrition professionals will agree that “Inflammation” is an incredibly overused and misused word in wellness communities. It’s absolutely a real thing but often used inappropriately (or to describe poorly understood phenomenon/ catch all symptoms), and I was trying to make a point based on an actual evidence based definition of inflammation
@@AbbeysKitchen the fact that you prefer to rely on what most nutriotionnal professionnals agree on instead of the very real and very valid experience of someone worries me. It's one of the reasons why it's so hard for people, especially women dealing with chronic pain and chronic illnesses to receive adequate care and advice from doctors and nutritionnists. Because you prefer to get up in arms about a word rather than to listen to your client's experience and reality.
i know whwt u mean but inflammation isnt the same thing as bloating. peanuts cause gas for a lot of people and therefore bloating but this does not equate inflammation
Abbey Sharp you are 100% correct on using the term "guilty" or "guilty pleasure" I have no idea why that was always in my brain growing up but it was on TV and media. Now I just say yes I earned to have this snack that I enjoy and it makes me happy I choose once a week some popcorn, a glass of liquor, a sweet, portion bag of chips, ice cream, ect. I feel like because I do well throughout the week why not just enjoy my life and have it! It really has helped me to think in that way I used to be a binge eater and when I had those words in my head that is why I would binge eat I told myself Ok I will just have my guilty food or snack and then before I knew it the entire cartoon or bag of something was gone! I'm glad that was helpful!
It was not at all riddled with misinformation. The bottom line is that there are too many human beings on our planet to ever have a sustainable way of fishing. The only people upset with the documentary are those that want to turn a blind eye to their own dietary decisions and the consequences those decisions have on our planet.
Hey I think Nina just meant that peanuts cause her a mild allergic reaction, not that it's inflammatory for everyone
Yes possibly, thanks for pointing this out!
Props to you Abbey!! I love your videos, people are always looking for a reason to be upset with creators. It’s not hard to scroll past and not watch or comment if they don’t like they way you’re trying to get the message across. If they watched your channel more they would know you speak on common food perceptions as a whole when celebrity brings it up. Not just to bash them. And even if it was for that, it’s because they tend to unknowingly feed toxic misinformation to young individuals who look up to them. (Not necessarily talking about Nina, just in general)

I guess as long as you’re being paid, it’s not an issue. It conflicts with everything that you preach. Built bars are good, but again their marketing tactic is “guilt free” candy. lol.

@@ViaCalderwoodMusic Regardless, it’s still contradictory. She criticizes guilt free marketing and says no food is guilty…but promotes a brand that perpetuates food as guilt.
