Indeed this sonata is entirely revisited by Sokolov. A quite different picture than Schubert by Kempff, Brendel, Richter, Lupu and so manyother highly talented pianists. We are at such a level that worndering who is "the best one" is a question without answer. Defining our own vision defines our "best" pianist.

This Schubert sonata is VERY sinister! It almost frightens me. It really ignites my anxiety. I´m surprised, because I never knew, that Schubert had anything this sinister in him.

I understand what you mean, but to call the sonata "sinister" is a bit much, I'd say.

I had no idea, that Schubert could "erupt" this way - like a volcano. Ha had more reserves, than the ordinary cultivated person would expect in his days. Grace was in highest demand - and he suffered from cyclothymia (a milder form of bipolar)..and he could, it was told by his friends, during a "gasthaus" evening, when he had had a solid amount to drink, suddenly withdraw into a corner, where he would sit squinting his eyes and crushing empty glasses with his bare hands. Yup. Schubert did house aggression - and it came out in music here and there.

@@screumeuleu Thanks, but, regrettably only by paid subscription. Several years ago they posted M. Pressler's concert at Verbier in toto for free for a few days then limited it to a small sample and could never find the missing part other than to buy the CD. I guess I'm just cheap. In any event, Sokolov's is much better, notwithstanding Pressler's plain refinement.

Hey, Chopin 1995 The encores were 4 fabulously played Chopin Mazurkas. Sokolov has an insight into these short gems that no other pianist has (the same is valid for the Schubert Moments Musicaux). Here is the URL
ruclips.net/video/efT7a9V8kCc/видео.html This is not the Aix concert but the performance is nearly identical. Enjoy!

Schubert at a snail's pace and constantly breaking the rhythm. I suppose it is pretty, but is it really Schubert?

  • @excelsior999

Is there ANYTHING that Grigory Sokolov cannot do with a piano? Methinks Not.
IMO, of the concert pianists performing today one could justifiably say that there is Grigory Sokolov and then there is everybody else. What a pity it is that Maestro Sokolov doesn't perform in the U.S.A.anymore and hasn't done so for quite a long time.

Real musical violence is used from "a vma" when he breaks this Schubert Piano sonata after just a couple of minutes in Part 1, and then let it continue in Part 2, without the beginning. Shame, shame.
