I grew up in the Appalachian mts of West Virginia. All throughout the 70s l was growing up in a little mountain community called Jolo. Near a small town called Bradshaw. Deep in the mountains of McDowell County WVa. When I was around 10 or 12 years old, I remember there was a snake handling church down by the creek near a place called 3 forks. My friends and I would hide in the edge of the woods across the road and watch in the summer when the doors and windows were open. They would play music and dance with those snakes just like the video. When I saw this it brought back a lot of childhood memories. If I didn't know what I do about this being very real, I would say the snakes were fixed surgically, but their not. I saw with my own eyes live. They milked the snakes and drank the poison to build up immunity so the bites were ineffective. TRUE STORY
Drinking venom doesn’t build up an Immunity. They would have had to inject it to build an immunity. People who are parts of these churches take the entire serpent handling part of the Bible way too far.
I'm from the south and in our church we offer thanks to God for giving us enough common sense to leave venomous snakes and angry women alone. I'm a firefighter and God protects us by providing good training and equipment and the common sense to use it. Got invited to one of the churches a long time ago. Wasn't told what kind of church it was. When the brought the snakes out, the young lady I was with screamed, "DO YOU FEEL IT?" I don't believe in offending creatures of life. It's written in the Bible not to offend, the snake was offended and struck back. The scripture refers to those that unknowingly interact with poisonous snakes in the wilderness and you accidently come upon them. They don't bite to consume but protect themselves. These snakes are made and give you ultimately more venum as they become stirred up. You put two actions together and 100% believe they are related when they may not be. I got to meet Pastor Jamie just a few months before he passed. Regardless of whether or not you think handling snakes is scriptural, you have to let these people live their faith. They aren't asking anyone else to pick up serpents, drink poison or anything else. I can assure you Jamie and his wife loved the Lord. Tragically they lost their daughter (the piano player) just a few months after Jamie passed. No, she wasn't bitten by a rattlesnake but died in a car wreck. (They could be blown to bits by a 12-gauge.) All we need to do is (a) leave the snakes alone and (b) should they invade our homes or property, have a good (not necessarily religious) snake handler move them to a safer place where they can live out their little lives.

But what these people fail to realise is that Paul didn't deliberately pick up a snake to be bitten, so that God could be tested. For anyone not familiar with American venomous snakes, I used to hunt them and here's some facts about it: 1. Snakes that you've kept in captivity for a while tame down a bunch, compared to recently wild-caught, especially when they get used to you feeding them. 2. Snakes that are chilled down quite a bit, like left in a barrel outside on a near-frezzing night, get VERY reluctant to bite. Combine those two elements and you get the effect seen here, snakes that you can pick up and carry around. As long as you don't hurt them or make them feel threatened, they're very reluctant to bite. Of course, there's always the one who doesn't follow the script. All, I said ALL, veteran snake handlers, who have decades of experience under their belt, will tell you the big story about the time they got bit. In other words, they've all been bit sometime or another. Many of them are missing some fingers, or parts of fingers, etc...

He didn't have much formal education, but he was intelligent, knew how to reach people from very diverse backgrounds and cultures, and had much practical wisdom and common sense! He preached in some of the, "back woods, snake handling" Pentecostal fellowships, but he drew the line when it came to that particular practice! One thing that he said about many of those people, though, is that in spite of that serious doctrinal abheration, "You couldn't touch their lives!". In other words, they lived very morally; no doubt, in part, because they could meet God at any time, if they didn't recover from a snake bite!

I don't believe in offending creatures of life. It's written in the Bible not to offend, the snake was offended and struck back. What are the torches for?
For anyone not familiar with American venomous snakes, I used to hunt them and here's some facts about it: 1. Snakes that you've kept in captivity for a while tame down a bunch, compared to recently wild-caught, especially when they get used to you feeding them. 2. Snakes that are chilled down quite a bit, like left in a barrel outside on a near-frezzing night, get VERY reluctant to bite. Combine those two elements and you get the effect seen here, snakes that you can pick up and carry around. As long as you don't hurt them or make them feel threatened, they're very reluctant to bite. Of course, there's always the one who doesn't follow the script. All, I said ALL, veteran snake handlers, who have decades of experience under their belt, will tell you the big story about the time they got bit. In other words, they've all been bit sometime or another. Many of them are missing some fingers, or parts of fingers, etc...

I am a Christian, but this service would frighten me. If that's how they choose to worship Jesus with including the use of snakes, that is there business. But learning and loving God, and teaching others about God , HIS LOVE, How HE chose to go to the Cross for you and me, winnng souls to Christ, that's good enough for me. I would have to get up and leave this church service, and that's my business. ( no disrespect intended )

There was an Evangelist who used to preach at our church back in the day, until he passed away in 1998. He preached and ministered all over the U.S., and in a number of foreign countries. He didn't have much formal education, but he was intelligent, knew how to reach people from very diverse backgrounds and cultures, and had much practical wisdom and common sense!
He preached in some of the, "back woods, snake handling" Pentecostal fellowships, but he drew the line when it came to that particular practice! One thing that he said about many of those people, though, is that in spite of that serious doctrinal abheration, "You couldn't touch their lives!". In other words, they lived very morally; no doubt, in part, because they could meet God at any time, if they didn't recover from a snake bite!

These people take a scripture completely out of context, this is more like tempting God to keep you safe from foolishness! It wasn’t meant for us to handle snakes in church as a symbol of one’s faith , it just simply means that if you should happen to get bit by a snake, God will protect you! Like the apostle Paul I believe that got bit on a island that was in some brush. Paul didn’t go acting foolish by tempting God!

I doubt their lives qualify as "gluttony" but I suspect their diets are not very healthy due to poverty and lack of education. I do think they are among the most sincere people one could ask to meet. To paraphrase the "quote" attributed to Voltaire, while I disagree with what they do (say), I defend their right to do (say) it.

I've seen the documentary about the son who also actually ends up getting bit and suffers some serious complications and my interpretation of what the son said is that the only reason you need to worry about the snake biting you is if you're not right with God...
