      That jug unfortunately broke, as David Hill was yanked back by one of the Time Team folks as he was about to aneal it and it cooled off too fast, the glass blower is Mark Taylor, both are well known in the reenactment scene they make the best roman glass replicas available. I know of this incedent as David Hill told me of this Time Team production.

His hat is worse - he needs to wear a bandana under that to keep the sweat build up off. I have a Australian type of hat, and it does not smell even after years, because if I sweat I wear a bandana under it, and it makes it far more comfortable. I can throw the bandana in the wash, and the hat stays sanitary.

    I loved York when I visited it. Beautiful city. I explored the walls, visited the cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre, and other places. Tudor buildings still standing. I still remember visiting a garden or park where there was a wall with levels of construction from different time periods, the base being Roman. I felt awe as I placed my hand on stones that were placed by someone many centuries ago.

    • @paulmentzer7658
      @paulmentzer7658 3 года назад +2

      Most top soil is made up of the remains of leaves and grass. Throw in animal "Waste" and blown in loose dirt, dirt made loose as cattle and other animals walk through the area, over time the dirt just accumulate. Think about the dust in your home after a week of not cleaning and think in terms of centuries not weeks, that top soil will build up.
      After several years, roots start to go through the top soil, building it up even more. In areas with adequate rainfall, dirt tends to cover everything.

    • @obscurazone
      @obscurazone 2 года назад +1

      You have to imagine that streets get rearranged, so the down courses of roads and plots get built on top of eachother over the centuries, parks included - also foundational stone of successive buildings. No need to dig up existing groundworks, and it makes more foundational sense (strength) to just build on top. We still do it today in a city, build on existing foundations if theyre still fit for purpose. Roads just get their top layer stripped and re laid. It is fascinating though I agree! And we're lucky it happened or none of this would be preserved :)

    • @Kholdaimon
      @Kholdaimon 3 года назад +9

      I think the difference is that,
      1: Victorian archaeology is not rare in the UK, but it is in the US.
      2: There are a lot of documents surviving that tell the British what was build where, they don't need to research it to find out what it was and whether it was something important. But in the US around that time it was just all pioneering work and there was little to no oversight and very little written down, so if you find something you don't know whether it was a house or the first parliament building of Georgia or some such... ;-)
      Also, Americans have a very warped view of what is precious or antique, I remember watching an show in which an American Antique salesman was showing his shop and his oldest item for sale was a baby bath-tub that was almost 50 years old... To Europeans that isn't antique, that is your mum's old bath-tub, Antique means it is a 100 years old at least.

    • @StoriesbyIrish
      @StoriesbyIrish 3 года назад +3

      @@Kholdaimon As an American, I can verify that the above is pretty much dead on. Except, I think some Americans even call something that's 20 years old an antique... me, personally, it's not antique unless 100+ years. Anything else, I'd say "antique looking" if it can fool me enough to look older than it actually is lol

    • @ElliotSoS
      @ElliotSoS 3 года назад +2

(I know, the water bottle won’t actually be left on this site, but it made me giggle that some items might be inadvertently left.). Thanks for all the shows; as many have said. I love them all, but can particularly get into the ones around the 1st century AD as I’m an avid reader of Lindsey Davis’ novels of everyday people and the actual, though fictionalized, lives and personalities of emperors Vespasian and his two sons. Her novels, all well researched, really bring that period alive. I’m sure most of you are aware of her novels, but this West Coast American of Alsace and Scottish origins wanted to recommend reading Lindsey Davis just in case you haven’t. Thank you, Time Team.

    Yesterday I watched quite a few hours of the original York broadcast, of which this is an edited version. I must say I enjoyed this one much more, as the other was a lot of running around by Tony and shrill commentary by Sandy, and was rather confusing. Also, this picture quality, sound and screen size is much superior. Great job, TT!
    I have a particular interest in York, because as an American I visited there twice, drawn by its history and archaeology. On the second trip, around 2005 or so, I saw the grounds by the hospital, which was being excavated once again; They were quite friendly to visitors and told me they were excavating air raid shelters from WW2. Makes me wonder how many time that area has been dug up and did they find anything new..
    This is the perfect series to binge-watch during these scary times to get my mind on something so fascinating.

    That bead was made in Venice, probably on the island of Murano. Roman glass technology was highly guarded by the Italians who inherited it, to the point that, during certain eras, speaking publicly of your knowledge of glass bead-working carried a death sentence. Since Vikings are known for their love of trade and travel, no surprise an Italian bead could be found in a Viking settlement. One thing for sure, that bead was a rare and special item to it's owner.

    This is such a brilliant series. I never tire of watching it; so well put together ! Great team, all different, each so talented. Just pity that the guy who wrote the theme music (which is very good as a theme) didn't know how to harmonise it correctly... :-/

      @@KuptisOriginalDD only applies to women. Cutoff shorts used to be normal until some nimrod decided shorts should go to the knees or below. Ugly, useless, etc. Shorts should be short, otherwise why bother. Just like swim trunks that go to the knees or below- useless "fashion". Trying to find real shorts these days is just about impossible.

    That was a really good one. I like the format where they covered each dig, one at a time,and it was fun seeing Sandy. Curious, did I miss the age-dating of the piece of wood they pulled out of the ground?

    My sister (English background 6 or so generations :-) ) had three sets of teeth. Baby and Junior then all adult. She had a rough go as she was grown and still cutting teeth! Mom was 1gen Norwegian. The Eastburn clan hailed maybe 20 kM East of York in the Manner grass covered building still exists of Eastburn. I believe pub and gas station...

    The description of some of the pottery is really great: Green Medieval ware. The medieval period is so roughly from the 450ties to 1492 so that was in use roughly for a thousand years?

      In England, when they say Medieval period, its after Norman and before Tudor. So its period of around 200-250 years🙂
