It's a song about self hatred for the pain he feels he has caused his home town of Compton for leaving and "making it" in the industry, and the people he left behind. If you read the lyrics with this in mind it hits a lot harder.
@albumShorn Yeah the album is so lyrically dense that it can take multiple listens for stuff like that to set in. You could always look at the Genius annotations for the songs if you wanna learn even more stuff that you may have never considered. It can be nice to see other perspectives and theories for what certain songs mean!

I don't know if you realized that the outro of Mortal Man was an edit of a Tupac interview and is one of the greatest edits in hip-hop history! Also, the single version of 'i' is more polished and worth checking out on its own.
