The first time I heard bloodhail. I stopped and listened. The spine chills and chicken skins. I realized I was changing as a person. That feeling is you changing. That song is designed to urge you to change. It has a fucking magic that all the guitarist selling their souls to all the devils can't touch. It's amazing. Also, devastating. I'll never be able to forget the song but I'll never be able to experience the change brought on by the song. One day, HANL little mainstream exposure will fade but there will always be a group of kids stumbling on this album. Other kids showing the ones they think will enjoy it. Another generation changing. This album is special. I'm glad I found this video
The loud distortion at the end of Earthmover isn't interference, it's actually Tim Macuga throwing his bass guitar on the floor from becoming so overwhelmed with the emotions of the song. (great video by the way)
I actually asked Dan about that a few years ago. Turns out he was just frustrated with the track because normally they would record the bass first, but they recorded it last for Earthmover and kept fucking it up, and apparently he was really hungry.
Yeah this is definitely one of those albums that when you're in the right mood or have the right frame of reference it hits entirely different. The first time I heard this album I was in a very dark place and listening to "I Don't Love" and "Earthmover" changed my life. It's not for everyone, but if it can penetrate the wall we put around our emotions it can be an incredibly affecting listen.
Where I first listened to this album I was wandering around Sydney at night and it was magical. By the time I got to Earthmover, I was stoned and on a beach at midnight and when that wall of sound hit I legit started crying.
When I first listened to this album I was quarantined for two weeks in snowy January with such bad insomnia and isolation and no frame of time and all I could do was listen to this album and watch the snow it was a feeling I will never exactly experience ever again
god I was on holiday when I first heard bloodhail and it clicked instantly. went and listened to the full album and was sent too a completely different place.
@@strawberrywigz1658 the master files are the WAV format songs that were lost in a drive crash, WAV are essentially the pure recording with zero compression that get converted to lossy formats like MP3 320/v0 due to how much smaller those files are while not sacrificing a ton in audio fidelity, with these 128kbps files Dan didn't have the luxury of doing so. i would compare it to something like a JPG image with a lot of artifacts as a result of it being compressed so many times, Deathconsciousness is the sonic representation of an old JPG image.
I love this fact so much. Like 99% of albums would be absolutely ruined if all they had left was a low quality backup but HANL made it work so well you would almost never guess the official release wasn’t actually the finalized mix
Funny thing is, I love this album and the cover, the painting is one of my favourites. This summer I went to a museum and lo and behold, there it was, the ORIGINAL painting, on the wall for me to admire. I can't say how lucky I am that such a painting is in the national art museum in my country (Belgium). Was really funny when I saw it and read that it was the actual painting. So now it's my phone background 😎
I went there today and it is one of my favourite paintings for the fact that is very unique for most of the painting serving as a blank space to put the focus on the small part that is Marat writting until his assassination. It is brutal
@@diogoazevedo4976 glad you enjoyed! Yes, it's rather unique and impactful. It's just a very emotionally heavy painting that conveys exactly what it wants
This album is incredible, I listened to it the first time just like you with no background or description and it floored me. The cover art is an incredible masterpiece by Jacques-Louis David called "The Death of Marat."
yea tim was recording ambient sounds. when he heard the voices being so drowned out he knew he had to throw it in. i mean fuck, cant blame him its terrific and one of the most ominous and hair raising songs on deathcon
NIN The Downward Spiral maybe in some future? I am really happy to see you react to this though, it's one of my favorite records. After this record, I think you are ready!
There are very little songs like A Quick One, the only other song I can think of that is like it is A Warm Place by NIN. Both songs just give off such a safe feeling.
If you loved this, please consider checking out the record "Unnatural World" that came after this one. Despite being much shorter, I feel like they improved on a lot of the qualities you had problems with. Also they have a TON of great demos you should check out, in my opinion their greatest song is Sisyphus and it has yet to be put on a record.
I love how you genuinely do react to the songs and don't just sit there and listen, you add a lot to the actual video itself and it isn't just the songs
hello Tony! I met your channel recently and its content is very interesting! I am a fan of Brazil and I would like to recommend a Brazilian band that I like a lot. It is called "O Terno" which would be "The Suit" in the translation. is a band that mixes rock from the 60s with mpb (Brazilian popular music). I think you'll enjoy it. the tracks "Não Espero Mais" (i don't wait it anymore) and 66 represent that a lot. on his most recent record he has a more bossa nova vibe. It's interessing too!Anyway, here's my suggestion! hugs tony!
the first album of have a nice life was recorded on a pin microphone. the budget costed less than 1,000 dollars, it took 5 years to create and record. it is a two part album, the second part starts with "the future" and continues on from there.
Agreed that it's DEFINITELY not the best entrypoint to Unwound; as that would probably be either Fake Train, New Plastic Ideas, or Repetition; but Leaves is the best album ever made by anyone so I can't be mad
if youre interested, the cover is actually part of a painting of the assassination of jean-paul marat, one of the leaders of the paris commune during the french revolution. a royalist sympathizer sought audience with him, saying she would give him important info. she gave him names of traitors to the revolution, he wrote the names down and then she stabbed him
The mixing problems is because the album was lost when their hard drive went to shit, all they had after that was low quality backups. It still sounds so fucking good to my ears but maybe that's because it just fits my personality. Their second album The Unnatural World has proper mixing and production, and still sounds depressing and deep as hell. Give it a listen!
You ever heard of Idiot Pilot? I reckon you might enjoy their dynamics, a great mix of hard guitars, harmonious synths with a fluctuation on vocals between soft and screams. You can clearly hear the bedroom creation on the three albums but brought to life in the studio, also produced by Mark Hoppus of Blink 182.
