In this video I cast a best-of-3 series of Stormgate between TLO playing with the Vanguard and MaNa playing with the Infernal Host. This series is played in the closed beta of Stormgate and showcases what the game is capable of so far. I'm pleasantly surprised with how good this looks!

    I think there needs to be a good story campaign to connect the players with the characters in the game. As corny as we say the StarCraft plot was sometimes, it was still amazing and that’s what so many of us were attracted to the game by.

    #1 issue like you were saying is readability. I think there's maybe 4 units I currently like the visual design of. Everything else needs a lot of help. Part of it is how small the units are - I think if the zoom were more comparable to WC3's zoom with the current size of unit it'd be easier to understand, but also there's going to be way more units on the field than in WC3 - so you kind of need the larger view. I think they could get away with making both the factions we've seen so far less generic. Could make the Vanguard more "holy" as a foil to the demonic incursion, and less like every unit is a marine. Would love to see priests or chaplains as a spellcasting unit. The Legion definitely has the stronger faction identity but I also feel like it could look "more evil". Just really lean into how corrupting the shroud looks and how messed up the hordes of monstrosities look.

    I feel like the veterancy mechanic for the humans will be a large part of their strength, in addition to encouraging denying the demons charges of their race mechanic, but i suspect a lot of people coming from StarCraft are going to have issues adjusting to keeping their units alive and healing them instead of constantly trading.
    I hope people will adjust because those gameplay mechanics should encourage very thematic strategies, and make the races feel very different

If you're trying to appeal to pro players, you need a reason for them to want to play this game. A hero-based RTS with unit and building speeds that slow is going to have such a low skill cap, you won't have people wanting to compete. If you're trying to appeal to casual players, they already have Age of Empires and an unlimited amount of custom maps on SC1/2. If you're trying to appeal to people who enjoy single player games, the story is completely superfluous and any type of campaign would be an afterthought. Personaly I dont care for the face cams, but i get why they were included.
    Like you said, casting interface is not great (yet) the thinks I like to see from the casterview; minimap, Income (per player,) units being build (per player) upgrades (are there upgrades in stormgate?) selected units,
    the top bar is not needed during the game, in the intro or start of the match its nice to see. but should disappear afterward
    for readability of the units, maybe an outline or a bump in contrast. corpses that stay on the ground also make it harder to see what is important. But is also kind of cool to see an aftermath of a battle (maybe desaturate the colors?)

    This is going to sound a bit weird, but I think my favorite aspect of these games so far is just how dynamically messy combat can get. It really looks like both factions are designed to be able to flood a battlefield with basic units very quickly and easily, and I love how that can cause even small skirmishes to just expand out of control.

  • @Zadrigo
    @Zadrigo 8 месяцев назад +15

    I am disappointed by the lack of atmosphere in this game. It was sold as apocalyptic but maps and units dont reflect that. Ppl were saying this is spiritual successor of Starcraft 2, but it feels like Warcraft 4 to me, especially with unnecessary creeps around the map. During alpha and beta, game would stutter and lag, which kinda makes their whole story about "rollback design" completely irrelevant. Many of these points may be addressed in the future - maps can be changed visually instead of being generic woods, lag may be improved with better servers etc - but this simply doesn't feel particularly "revolutionary" to me. And its obvious that APM will still be huge factor, Mana proved it effortlessly. He mopped both TLO and Moon, WC3 champion. And finaly, regarding the 3rd faction, which would be sort of Protoss, they said they aimed at even smaller number and more expensive units than Toss in SC2, which kinda dissapoints me since lack of units at the beginning of the game translates into necessity of Protoss to play defensivelly and hug the walls and shield batteries in order not to sustain excessive damage. All in all, one OK RTS, but far from what was promised and hyped. Certainly not one I would particularly like to watch, unlike Starcrafts.

      It feels like a rip off of StarCraft/Warcraft rather than a new RTS.
      Same map, same basic features, nothing that couldn't be done with the SC2 editor.

      Bro its an really early beta gameplay. Saying this is clunky just shows that you never took a look at the SC2 Beta. Pls watch that to get a feeling of what a beta looks like. The rollback design is a really good method and it is for sure not irrelevant because it lags from other things. It is like saying "Oh i dont need the graphic optimisation i already have optimized the performance for the processor".
      And your "all in all" doesent make sense either since this is an early beta, which just got out of the early alpha. It is NOT the full game dude. It is probably half of it. And you wanted an spiritual successor of Starcraft 2 but yet you are complaining it looks too much like Warcraft and Starcraft?

      It’s okay to be worried, but there’s no way to know that there will be a specific problem before we actually see it in game. There’s so many things they could do to fix the Toss issue. Maybe the new faction’s units will be available at the start of the production cycle instead of the end. Maybe the workers will be more available as defensive units, like militia in WC3. Maybe their basic unit will have some way to be aggressive while still being able to defend if need be.

I find it really hard to follow what's happening even in the smaller fights, I think model sizes should be increased by like 10-20% so that we can better see what's going on. there's a reason why zerglings are decently big in SC2, so you can actually see them doing stuff on your screen (and even zerglings are pushing it a bit.)
    also more apparent colouring of the teams, because for example the Lancers I couldn't tell where there was supposed to be any team colour, they were just all black and grey. like if this was a mirror I feel like I would get lost instantly.

    I have mix feelings about this game, more leaning towards the negative side.
    In one hand, I think the entire Vanguard faction is kind of.... Bland? Generic? Unappealing? Something along those lines..
    Including their first hero... In coop, it is a sci-fi "paladin" whose special ability is to whirlwind its hammer? I mean, it would be an okay idea to implement in a mobile game that I would play while I'm in the bathroom, but for a game that is striving to be the spiritual successor of WC3/SC2, I don't think it will be enough. They still have the whole tier 3 units to bring novelties and to remove that impression though. Let's keep our hopes high.
    Also the shown cinematics are... Uninspiring, I would say, especially the TGA one. I didn't feel ANY motivation to research about stormgate, and I had the impression that the story would be generic AF watching that. I don't think it has caused a good impression overall... However, I understand that they probably are in a tight budget and really shouldn't be investing in making good cinematic to showcase the game or in campaign...
    On the other hand, I really like the new mechanics that they are trying to introduce, (e.g. shroud/white bar, the shroudstone energy gathering+ability thing, etc). I also like the the maps, they look diverse enough from each other,making you really change your strategies depending on which one you're playing.
    Let's see how the development goes... I think that if they can introduce a third race that brings different mechanics to the table, diverse and inspiring tier 3 units to Vanguard+Infernal, good heroes and a campaign with a decent story and a co-op with replayability and different maps/mechanics, they really have a chance to succeed in transforming stormgate in a great RTS.

    The gameplay looks really cool. The Infernals feels like a cross between Protoss and Zerg with the creep like stuff and the shield mechanic. There needs to be some sort of cooldown for the healing ability of the Harbinger because I see that ability being OP. Perhaps the Harbinger ability functions for say 30 seconds before it hits a cooldown or maybe have it so the shields heal up outside of combat like the Reaper in SC2.

    I've seen most suggestions I'd make for readability in these comments already. Mainly to more prominently display the team colors on units, with the secondary colors largely team-neutral to not distract. Also team-colored health bars or - if you want to keep the green>red color shift as an easy indicator of low health - a colored border for them.
    Another point mainly for casters would be a toggle to show/hide team-colored outlines on units. That way you can get a more direct impression, especially for viewers who may not be as familiar with the unit designs as active players.

      It’s just a show match to show the audience the current state and some idea of the gameplay. It’s not important for now which race is stronger since it is unbalanced at this stage anyways. The developers are aware of that and it’s absolutely natural to be unbalanced in this state of the game

    Super intruiging gameplay. The unit pop at 23:17 was epic.
    One observation I have is that units seem in general to be a lot tankier than in other RTS's. Skirmishes last a lot longer as a result, but it is harder to see when big damage is dealt and how impactful things are in battle because the battles are more drawn out.
    I will say there are a lot of cool mechanics that can really make this game unique.

    I really think the game needs a massive aesthetic overhaul, the artstyle really is... not amazing, it does make it hard to tell units apart in large amounts, and its just not super appealing, it looks like a mobile game, everything seems washed out, bright but not vibrant, and lacks outlines. Stuff blends together too much, and stuff like the... infernal creep? is way too blurry and bland comopared to creep, needs to be more vibrant but darker, instead of just cloudy grey, should be black with red veins between it, more magma, less smoke. Cause the game is just WAY too bright. Like the gold ore is so bright its hard to see details on it because its basically just a rock with flashbang bright yellow veins.
    Also the minerals being so weirdly named and both being "Minerals" is so confusing, they really shoulda done something different, cause like with starcraft its just minerals and gas, even though they have bigger names they can be simplified to that, the resources in this are like... lumanite and etehrium or some shizz.

    • @SilentdragonDe
      @SilentdragonDe 8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, the artstyle/graphics is what bothers me the most about the game. It just doesn't look good. I do hope that they change this, it would suck if a RTS with amazing mechanics got let down by its graphics.

    • @RazanaArcclaw
      @RazanaArcclaw 8 месяцев назад

      Yeah for a game like an RTS where it is so fast paced, you want the graphics to both look good, but also be easily distinguishable. You need to tell what is there and how many at a glance. as is they are so bright but also muted that you just can't really tell at a glance what the heck is going on. The "human" race is doing a bit better, but still has issues, but the infernal race is just a mess. @@SilentdragonDe

    @user-yn6eu7xc5i 8 месяцев назад +1

    First time checking out live gameplay of this new RTS, heard about it before though.
    Former Starcraft 2 devs made this, and it shows... this looks feels and plays like just a reskinned SC2 with some MOBA-reminiscent mechanics + art style sprinkled in. They even copied the ""Xel'naga watch towers" straight out of SC2, still harvesting 2 resources, those Infernals' starter units are a dead ringer for zerglings, and is that also a creep-equivalent I see on the Infernals base?, and so on.
    MY GUT CONCLUSION:
    Stormgate as a competitive SC2-style RTS will inevitably provide a very comfortable decently balanced and even surprisingly challenging RTS with a high skill ceiling, to be fun to play and engaging for those who get into it with a decently healthy online-ranked ladder and maybe even a fledgling e-sports bump to call its own (for how long, probably not the longest)...
    However, all of this feels FAR too safe. SC2 can say the exact same as that but SC2 has already been out 10+ years and is itself dying in updates, support, popularity, player-base, video/streaming coverage, gamer-culture interest, e-sports showings and overall funding, among other metrics. This has been attributed to not only SC/SC2 but the genre itself, at least in that form.
    For SG, it is dubious what the fate holds for a game that is essentially copying it and so closely too. SG feels like a generic shadow of arguably what might still be an ultimately superior product no matter how much they put into SG. After all, SC2 is purty damn refined and good at its niche, it's no slouch and held it's own for a small age in gaming, and combined with SC1 Brood War we are talking about continual legacy going back to late 90's. Also, good luck to the team balancing 5 wholly separate races to avoid cheap metas, easy exploits, high-probability win strats and so forth. Not saying it's not doable, but this is a smaller team and they will have tons of other dev priorities always going on, and a questionable market for this game. I'm sure they'll do ok financially, but not necessarily break the bank either, which then in turn especially in this brutal gaming industry climate puts the game's future in doubt as well.
    Back to the gameplay, what I see doesn't strike me as being revolutionary, ground-breaking or frankly really even a tier/step up from the caliber that SC2 already achieved in the RTS genre. The soul of SG feels like a Starcraft 1.5 but highly modded to be a bit better than merely 1.5, skinned in a Warcraft-vs-Robotech aesthetic, and fused with a 2010 first-gen MOBA. My gut tells me this game will be a very decent also-ran entrant into the RTS canon of gaming when all is said and done, be able to hold it's head up proudly as an indie effort, and it will attract a devout following probably for the right reasons, however it will never gain any substantial traction or gravity and in a just few years time hardly even be played anymore. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

  • @Reliquarium
    @Reliquarium 8 месяцев назад

    I'd be surprised if this makes it to release without another faction to play. My gut feeling would be that only 2 factions would really stifle the complexity of the game overall, and whether that's true or not, would likely make a lot of people hesitant to invest in heavily.

  • @obsolete959
    @obsolete959 8 месяцев назад +3

    50-80% of all SC2's units textures are devoted to the player color (which are all very bright and have a high contrast) for a very good reason. This simply isn't enjoyable to watch because you don't know who's who. They need to go back to the drawing board with the graphical design of the units and add more surface area to the player colors and make it truly stand out to make the game legible.

    Yeah, my "problem" with many of these new RTS games currently in the works is that they're still very rough. Obviously animations and stuff will (hopefully) improve, but something like unit legibility is key. Currently this looks like a very clunky mix between SC2 and WC3 for the most part. The units for the "mechanic" (forgot the name of the race) are all over the place in terms of design as well. Maybe that makes sense once the game is fully released. In any case, watching a game of SC2 you can pretty much always tell what's going on, even in ZvZ. Until you've not reached that level of fidelity I don't see a reason for this game or other games like it to succeed. It doesn't really seem to be all that special for now. Just my personal opinion, but sometimes it's better to NOT show the general public your game in such an early state.
