I always preferred his flavor of neo-classical shred over those who followed him. There is a grace and classiness to his classical.

Since the first time I heard Taken by Force Uli took me to a land of scales that were different than the rest I had heard.. Uli introducing melody with the minor modes changed the whole game as much as Sgt Peppers changed things. Being influenced by Jon Lord and Uli has made me do keyboard leads that take it to a new level. Thanks brother. I've passed on your teachings to many Canadian musicians. We all appreciate and respect you. God bless Mr. Roth.

It should be way over a million watches. Uli has come over to AMERICA many, many times after his return in 2004. But I still wonder....how many of these who have watched are from the USA and how are from Europe and the rest of the world. One of the few living LEGENDS playing today. This is so bold, strong and emotive. It is out of the range of what listeners hear. The octaves on a guitar, beyond the range of a modern music fan. But it is great that more and more people have come to hear this original work of his and EXPAND their hearts, ears and minds. Amen.

He made grown men cry when he returned to the U.S. in 2004, (The last concert i was able to attend; followed by heir Schenker.) after 19 years away. I'm talking about dudes w/leather and chain wallets man. tears came out of the side of my eyes. His emotive playing moved us all. And that was when he was playing 2 of Vivaldi's 4 Seasons. The quietist passages and the, as you said, violin-like crescendos moved us all. That night he ripped Little Wing and Watchtower with authority as well. He has a voice unto himself and not many guitarists or musical artists you can say that about.

@@antrygis1 He does make it sing like a violin. I've had a couple private guitar lessons with him in addition to going to the Sky Academy. I've actually hung out with him for several hours once (had a 1 hour private lesson and he gave me several more because we were enjoying hanging out). It was awesome. We talked about the Beatles, Dylan, world peace, health, etc. He's the most generous down to earth human. I remember him telling me how he can diffuse bad energy in a venue by changing/focusing the music to the negative energy and creating/projecting calmness (he said it in the kindest, simple way, no ego). I feel so fortunate to have met him as he's my favorite musician since I was a kid. Some people would die to meet Madonna, Michael Jackson, Van Halen, etc. For me, meeting Uli (several times) was a fantastic experience.

    • @Zymoticus
      @Zymoticus 10 лет назад +5

"Best" in context of music is a destructive introduction of the concept of competition in a place where it generally does not belong, but even though I prefer Roth's work with the Scorps and Electric Sun to what he's done since he came up with the "sky" concept (except "Metamorphosis," which was phenomenal,) he's easily one of the most brilliant electric guitarists ever to walk on this particular planet.
And I do not mean that in a "fanboy" sense, but from the context of a guitar and bass player with a background in rock, classical and jazz. Roth's sense of melody and phrasing are off the charts. It's just too bad the pickups he's using on the Sky Guitars are so overbearing and muddy. The Sky Guitars are beautiful instruments, no doubt, but the pickups are so hot that they kill all sense of subtlety.
But that's a criticism of equipment. The artist himself is truly a master, on a par with Beck, Hendrix, Paul and Reinhardt.

I was just blown away... For me, he was so incredibly good. And yet I was used to virtuoso guitar players, but I was in awe... And I love his classical edge.

For the record, unless names like Blackmore, Schenker, Hendrix, and those mentioned as his contemporaries, not much else needs be said. He's not a big name in the popular culture, but guitarist worldwide are beholden to him and know his work.

yes, the world. there's a reason lots of people like Jimi. forget about what he played, he wrote great songs man. and the fact that ppl are still turned on by his licks from 40 years ago says something.
grow up and APPRECIATE all musicians whether you like them or not. you have a lot to learn KID!!

i meet many musicians in my travels that don't know uli roth...
unfortunate, because he influenced all the greats. he is the guitar....
....in simplest terms for todays musicians , i say he is the one that
took over for hendrix, and became the bridge from hendrix to malmsteen.

You forgot "Taken By Force" and "Tokyo Tapes" - two great albums. "Sails of Charon" from "Taken" is usually the most amazing song he plays live. I've seen four of his N.Y. shows in recent years and all of Times Square vibrated with awe every time. (Spoke with him at one show. He's a beautiful person)

Thanx for the upload - I heard good things about him, but this is the first time I've seen, him.
Unbelievable feel, and on such a difficult instrument. The range of 36 frets was a great idea

I'm a hardcore metalhead. But I listen to all kinds of music as well and I agree with you that Uli Jon Roth made a great contribution to metal, but because of his exotic style he is often forgotten. But not by me.

Uli is one of the greatest, and sadly, many don't know of him. Correct me if i'm wrong, but Uli was the one who brought classical music into his playing, which u can here in this song. Yngwie is not the inventor of neo classical guitar!

It's like Yngwie - but with class, taste, and better tone. And Uli did it first, too. I just hope he gets round to recording the guitar concerto he has written...

    Uli Jon Roth

I met you in Roppong hard rock cafe about twenty years ago.
I deeply appreciated you and your fellows.
