  • Karla Helbert, LPC, C-IAYT, is a licensed professional counselor, internationally certified yoga therapist, Compassionate Bereavement Care® provider, award-winning author, and grief activist.
Karla’s therapy practice has a focus on loss, trauma, grief and bereavement, working in particular with those affected by trauma and traumatic death. She leads classes, workshops and retreats for the bereaved as well as trainings for professionals on how to work with those impacted by traumatic grief and death.
A volunteer with the MISS Foundation, an international non-profit organization dedicated to supporting families after the death of a child, Karla is a support-group facilitator, leader of the Richmond VA Chapter, and member of the Foundation’s Bereaved Parent Advisory Board. Karla is also co-creator of the MISS Foundation’s training program for yoga and mental health, combining current science and research on grief and trauma with the ancient teachings of yoga.
Karla’s award-winning book Yoga for Grief and Loss is endorsed and used as a teaching tool by leaders, teachers and experts in the fields of yoga, grief and loss. She is also the author of Finding Your Own Way to Grieve: A Creative Activity Workbook for Kids and Teens on the Autism Spectrum, the 2013 recipient of the Gold Medal for books in the category of Grief/Death & Dying from Independent Publishers. Her newest book The Chakras in Grief and Trauma is the currently the only source that focuses on the energetic aspects of the effects of trauma and loss.
Relying on the teachings of yoga, on ritual, meditation, and creative expression, Karla honors the pain and the joy which coexist in all of life. Seeking to remain as aware and present as possible to all of life, she sees grief, her own as well as that of others, as both a learning and a growth process. All of her practice, writings, and teachings are based in these principles. She lives and works in Richmond VA with her husband and their daughter.

This channel is helping me on my withdrawal journey! I'm in pretty good shape as far as tapering goes so far, day 2, probably shouldn't be drinking too much coffee but here we are and I'm thriving! Looking forward to a drug free existence! Much love and luck to all on similar journeys! And less similar journeys!

I did an art therapy support group after my mom died and found it really helpful. Since then, I've continued to seek out art activities. It's challenging because psych drugs inhibit my natural creativity but I think it helps to push against that. I've also pushed myself to work on my photography more even when I feel like I'm producing a lot of crappy photos 😂

I’ve done EMDR twice with my therapist (after my last two dogs passed). I’ve started my next EMDR session to deal with all the trauma I’ve faced in the past 10 years as a stepmom including their bio mom’s violent suicide attempt in front of them, and me being the first family member to arrive at her house. She has Borderline Personality Disorder, so the complications continue, but both boys are adults now and it’s time to do the work to help my PTSD and GAD. I highly recommend trying it if you’re suffering from trauma.
