Your computer is hanging. Same old Windows, right? Except you’re using a brand new Windows 8.x or Windows 10 device; you’ve only had it a few days. So just what is going on?
Investigating, you discover that your system drive is running at 100%. Surely this can’t be right? Sadly, it is. The latest versions of Windows have a problem with the drives being over worked, which slows down the operating system. This issue affects both hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs).
Several fixes are available for this, depending upon what exactly is causing the problem.

I still wonder why microsoft is not coming up with a patch for this, when whole internet is talking about this issue.
Once again, win 10 updates, created all hell.
Prior to the win 10 "Creators Update", each update caused me a total hard drive disaster because the updates were installed in error and caused the "wuauserv" win update program to use 100% hard drive as it endlessly searched for updates. So I had to remove the updates and then reinstall them. That fixed the problem.
Even after the win 10 "Creators Update" was installed, further new updates were installed, and as usual I was right back with 100% hard drive usage. So I removed the KB4022725 update, and all was well again.
Also, due to me having win 10 pro, I disabled "auto updates", via the use of the Group Policy settings.
( Run gpedit.msc . Follow file paths "Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components \Windows Update", then double click on "Configure Automatic Updates", and select the update option #2 ).
Now my computer will ask me whether or not to permit future updates to be downloaded, and also the computer must ask me for approval of the installation of any of these downloaded updates.
Well I just loaded the updates that windows informed me of moments ago, and all is OK so far.
So as long as these updates are loaded and installed as the single action of the computer, and thus they are not active along with any other programs, and are not interrupted due to turning the computer off, then everything turns out OK.
its made for SSD not HDD
It's not an issue though, if you have an optical drive in 2018 then it's already going to bottleneck your PC. On top of that, most cheap netbooks with power saving capabilities have 5200 RPM HDD's, and that's pretty crap. Solid state drives get rid of this issue completely, but they're expesnive! In conclusion, we shouldn't be using hard drives because they bottle neck our PC components. Solid State Drives are the way to go.
Kyle no i have ssd and same i have problem
Makes more difficult trying to do these steps because my laptop keeps freezing for a minute every time I do something
orbitalfire same
Maybe your hard drive is damaged. Try scanning it for errors in it's sectors with chkdsk. Otherwise use a program like macrorit disk scanner and scan it
William d'Hersigny i did a full factory reset of my laptop, defragmented disks, and a ton of other things involving closing tasks and changing read to write and blah blah blah. it showed improvement overall but at times even a small workload on the hard drive would cause it to shoot up to 100% again
William d'Hersigny given my laptop is about 5 years old I’m not surprised haha
might be time to replace the disk with an SSD
Bro its 2020 and this is still a thing!
Edit: None of these worked anyone else got a fix?
I haven’t reinstalled windows in 4 years. Shits happening to me on a brand new build bruh I’m sick
Like wtf why cant they come out with a fix with a windows update I know a lot of people have this issue !!
I think it depends on how old your hard drive is. I've watched at least a dozen videos on trying to fix it but my disk usage is still 100%, all caused by System. At this point, it seems like it's my hard drive's fault now. Also, just a tip you should definitely get an SSD as your boot drive. Hard drives are pretty shitty at this.
@@revv0o Ok il try getting a ssd but I'm just not for sure how to make the ssd the boot drive. Everyone is telling me to get an ssd because iv only got a harddrive. Anyway il try thanks
@@vsynccx4263 depends if your mobo supports an ssd though, any will do and is better than a slow hard drive
This is such a lovely and professional video.

Organized because of the sections and difficulty settings you wrote on the handle of each section.
I fixed this by unninstalling WINDOWS 10 and installed MS DOS

Thank you so much! Stopping "Windows Search" fixed the issue.
Your video is well-articulated and well thought out. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Yep it was superfetch and the windows search for me. Ironic that apps that the descriptions say make the computer faster actually make it slower.
MS humor :D
FleetAdmiral01 It was exactly those two for me aswell.
I've been using my PC with 100% disk space for about a year now. Never thought that something like this was the problem, only that my PC is getting "sick". However, I solved it. Fuck Superfetch and Windows search.

I did the chkdsk thing and it’s been 1 hours since it move from 10% do i just really just need to be patient or its not normal?
I found this very usefull! Problem was solved after stoping/disabling windows search (step1) however I fallowed the remaing steps as they seemed valuble never the less. Much appreciated sir.
Thank you SO much, I have been plagued by this for months now and was unable to play games due to the stuttering, quickly identified 100% disk usage as the issue but could not find a fix, the PCI driver fix has seemed to worked and been staring at my D drive activity for 20 minutes and whereas before it was constantly spiking up and down 20-50% then every so often hitting 100% for long periods it is now flat 0%!
Do you have anywhere I could drop some funds your way as a small thankyou?
PCI EXPRESS fixed it! But at 6:35 "follow the instructions to restart windows" where are these instructions? I'm scared to restart and find 100% again :(
It went back as i restarted T_T And now the number is already 0 :/
when i restarted mine i got critical service failed error and cant boot into windows now so i you should be happy
cant even scan the PC for malware because it's always 100%. the AV program took 10 mins to launch and took forever to scan for just 1%

I've literally done every damn fix that I found on youtube and the last one was the IDE Controllers registry fix. I am beyond amazed that this actually worked. You saved me a lot of trouble, thanks a lot :)
maiden22acacia people need to make sure that their registry entries match exactly though since there are a few diff types of them, you can mess up your computer badly by editing the wrong thing in the registry.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! My PC is now running a zillion times faster! I was thinking I’d have to buy a new one but now I can hang onto this one for a while longer.... 🙂
Which one did u use?
Plz anyone help. I am thinking to make these changes. Are these safe to do? I know in the video it says that these changes can speed up a computer, but are there any side effects/disadvantages to this??? Any help is appreciated!!!
Thank you very much. My gaming PC I spent thousands on and have had for three years now finally runs like I always thought it should. I didnt even know it was an issue until I was looking for a fix for long loading times on Rust, I thought it was just normal for a PC to is 100% while gaming. Thank you very much for the fixes my good fellow and enjoy the rest of your year :)
My disc usage went from 100% 24/7 to 1% - 5% consistently
My problem was superfetch. VERY USEFUL VIDEO!!!
So, by my research Spotify is causing the problem. When it is open my disk space jumps to 100%, when i close it, it normalizes to 20%-25%. For me this works, i dunno if you even use spotify.
2 years have passed and it still works! Thanks!
After done the tutorial and restart my pc, it stuck at scanning abd repairing drive c for moree than 45 minute... I should have not put the prompt chcdsk right?? How to fix this please???
Oh my god!! This is really amazing, i literally fixed my laptop by going back to windows 7😞😞
I'm also decided to downgrade to window 7.

Superfetch caused me big issues. Disabling definitely helps.
Superfetch method helped me...did it permanently solves?
Wow, the very last tip is what brought me from constantly above 85% (after disabling windows search and a few other tips from this video, which brought my disc usage down to 85-90 from 100%) to a maximum of 15%! hovering around 1-7% constantly. You are the fricken man, thank you.

holy crap you legit saved my life with the registry editor man i cant thank you enough
I cant find the device parameters on the registry editor can you help iam 8.1
Stupid question, but what exactly is Windows Search? It sounds like it refers to the literal search bar in the bottom right, but idk it seems like an odd thing to disable. Are there any complications that can arise from disabling it? Sorry, I'm just nervous about fiddling with aspects of my computer that i don't know about.
My version uses Power Shell ... superfetch is not listed and the command prompts such as DiagTrack are not recognized ... any suggestions ... thanks
I just needed to come here and comment that this video was amazing. Disabling Windows Search solved the problem after hours of looking for viruses and other potential causes. Well done.
1 Year later and it's still not patched.
Also, do not terminate system processes. My laptop bluescreened when i did it and gave me the error CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. That means that i killed a critical process. Whoops!
Yes, don’t terminate system processes since those are important but terminate user processes since those are just installed programs.
basically just told system32 to stop
ikr
I thought everybody knew that
don't listen to it! Windows is just mad you stabbed it in the heart! do it again, and again, and again! then, nuke it from space and install Linux. Just to be sure.....
Omg thank you so much for uploading this video. My laptop has had this issue for years and all other help online wasn't doing it until I saw this. You're a life saver!
It happens when im copying large files or unzip large files. It slows down and keeps 100% even when its done. Also when im installing a game from steam or origin my 2 TB hdd from seagate will slow down and steam says hdd write error. But after many retrys its finally installed. I hate this so much. Im gonna try these tips tomorrow. Also when its 100% my pc wont shutdown for like 15 min. But wtf my os is running from Samsung 850 evo 500gb ssd. Seems like windows cant shutdown the hdd properly when its 100%. In taskmanager i see that the proces "System" is the problem. But i cant disable that because thats a part from windows thats needed. Im really confused.
Windows search worked for me, thank you very much!
MakeUseOf will all this methods fix microstuttering whipe playing games on laptop
That could be caused by any number of things, but I'd give it a go to see. If not, likely your graphics chip just isn't good enough.
Thnx brother I will give a try
Thanks so much, disabling windows search has done the trick for me.
Hi, in my windows operating system,
There are 2 different disk usage of this do you know how to fix it
It stuck at 50% at process and 100 % I performance
But...is that an hardware solution?

The best video ever made about this topic! Clear english and good explanation i figured out my problem and you got a like! Btw what is AVG update module i canot open it on my laptop and it is the thing usig all of my disk and is it really necesary to remove Superfetch if your a gamer??????
4:47 Thank you so much! It was this issue that gave me a BSoD codenamed "UNEXPECTED STORE EXCEPTION". I found out that my Disk Usage was at 100% and figured out that this was the main issue. Your instructions were really clear and now my PC runs super quickly and sounds really quiet as well. Thanks so much!

PCI Express firmware bug:
When I view my driver details I am seeing 2 AMD SATA controllers. Is this normal?
same here. and I wonder what to do with the Device Instance Path(s) value(s) copied to Notepad
I dont have a command prompt admin anywhere on my start menu when I right-click

Hi my pc would spike up sometimes to 100 so I did the PCI Express step, I changed the value from 1 to 0 and pressed enter and as soon as I did that it spiked right to 100% and stayed there. I disabled Windows search on Windows 10 but it didn't solve the 100% disk issue.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I started out at 80% at lowest disk usage and was normally around 100% which really bugged out my PC but going through this list and following the steps of what applied to my PC, even while running a full scale virus/malware check of my PC (Just in case there's some troublesome files that are adding to my high disk usage) I'm at a steady 60% at most. I can never thank you enough for this tutorial video!
THanks literally had my pc for two days and I had too do this hahah
This is a very good video. Sadly, none of the tips did a single impact on my 100% disk usage issue.. I have tried literally anything internet has to offer to fix it, but guess what, nothing fixes it... I even changed the disk, and it got worse when I got a better disk..
Reformat would be my recommendation at that point.
This bug has survived 2 reformats and 2 separate hard drives haha At this point I'm convinced it has something to do with the hardware environment that windows 10 doesn't like on the machine itself.
A disk defrag was able to get some of it under control just now. Although still has large usage spikes back up to 100%
Final note: Ran the troubleshooting wizard, which found a few things and was able to correct them. Disk usage now down in the single digits and no large spikes.
Also went into services.msc and disabled superfetch on start. Rebooted to see if it held and it did! After it finishes booting up, disk stays below 10%.
Troubleshooting Wizard for what? What did you click on?
This is happening to my laptop. Hp beats.
Damn. I try the 1 and 2 but my pc die bec. My fan is having its moment to cool down the pc bec. Of 100% disc usage. And it was also overheating. Damn.

i have tried these solutions . but i have still this problem in my pc. it is heppening for system disk usage . i notced in task manager that the system usage is increasing too much while i unzip a file or install a software
Stopping superfetch fixed my issue on my laptop. Didn't know about apps being pre-loaded. I thought disabling startup would fix that. Thanks!
None of this worked. Nothing works. I've checked tons of videos, and nothing works! What the hell!!
Nexxarian is your HDD 5400rpm?
Nexxarin , have you solved this problem?
Shaurya Vashistha the only solution to this is getting a 7200rpm HDD or an SSD(which is better)
*_ALL_* HDD will have this problem.
Nexxarian your pc is just trash. Deal with it
I had the same issue too. The disk was running at 100% and it made my laptop terribly slowly. I looked online for solutions but nothing seemed to work.
As a last resort before sending it for repair, I downloaded a trial version of Eset antivirus. I scanned my computer and it turns out there were a lot of trojan coin miners from all the games that I had downloaded running in the background. The antivirus removed the coin miners and the issue was resolved immediately.
P.S : I had been using the free version of Avast antivirus earlier, but it didn't detect any virus in my computer. So you're probably better off buying a real antivirus program that actually protects your computer.
