I've had my GTI since 2019 (new) and plan to keep it because the replacement is now more than R200K extra. I also purchased additional maintenance plan up to 150 000 KM's. Tyres, I replaced 3 sets so far and currently on the forth set, usually get around 35000KM per set because I rotate them every 6000KM (MPS4). As for fuel consumption my car averages around 6.3L/100 at this stage (down from 8.2 - 8.8L/100KM's. I just driver slower now :) Only negative I have is the carbonised valvles that need to be cleaned every 50000KM's but its covered under the maintenance plan so its a small inconvenience over the full term of ownership.
Good video and sounds about spot on regarding cost. I own an Stage 1 GTI AW down here in Cape Town, pushing around 184kw. What a daily to own, worth every penny.
The fuel consumption is actually really good. I have 2019 Vivo 1.4 and my average urban consumption is 8l/100km. 33ltrs of fuel would get me around 410kms.
I think it's better to save up a bigger deposit for this car. I have the 2019 model and the market for it at the time was around R400k, even ones with low mileage. My instalment is less than the one stated here thanks to the sale of a previous car. The facelift and beyond have ridiculous price tags on them, considering that only mostly exterior parts have changed and the drive train has stayed the same (EA888Gen3b and DQ250). Also have the PS5 tyre. Can be had for less than 3k if you shop around, Tiger wheel and Tyre I find often give you a good deal. No doubt it's an expensive car to run, if not mainly doing highway driving, the little sprints here and there really kill the fuel consumption. Buying the VW maintenance plan will be well worth your money, especially considering they are willing to extend the plan, at a cost to you, up to 150000km or more. Hope you find the right dealership to see to your car though, they can be naggingly annoying at times to deal with. Still, a fantastic mini hot hatch, can give bigger cars in this category a run for their money in the right hands and with the right set up. Also very nicely specced if you have the correct options ticked (digital cluster, heated seats, lane change assistance). The biggest annoyance in this model range is the dreaded Service Campaign 24WH, which essentially killed the performance of the pre facelift cars to match emissions of the facelifted versions. Definitely a car to get if one can afford the costs.
I wouldn’t include all of the finance because some of your payment will go towards the balance owing and a portion of that will make its way back to you when selling. So that money is just moved elsewhere temporarily. Maybe instead the cost paid in interest and the cost of devaluation. Surprised how much fuel is used, it’s almost on Tiguan level. But the fun factor is most likely worth it. (If I’m well behaved I can squeeze 1200km out of the same size tank on my Polo TDI)
Wow that is insane especially for what is supposed to be a economy car slightly warmer over. This is why I stick to used Japanese cars that have already taken a big depreciation hit. For that same annual amount you could have an older tuned mk1 for fun drives and then something like a used Honda Jazz for everything else. Thanks for the breakdown it absolutely proves what a waste of money cars can be.
