    After watching a number of Ryan Murphy series, I think I’ve figured out his formula:
    1. Hook people in at the beginning using a combination of flamboyance, shock value and melodrama
    2. Try and weave in some sort of social commentary with varying degrees of success
    3. Stop trying midway through the series and let it become a convoluted mess with no satisfying conclusion

    I just wrapped up myself and thought it was really well made. It's definitely grimey and reminds me of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer so it's not for everyone. I will say that after seeing countless Dahmer documentaries, the main actor and his dad absolutely nailed their roles in particular. The voices, the body language, the awkwardness, it was completely spot on. I guess the only complaint I had was the score was basically a Joker ripoff and off putting. Not a "fun" watch but fascinating nonetheless.

    Ryan Murphy just can't take it to a place like cronenberg with 'videodrome ' & 'crash' or lynch with 'blue velvet ' & 'twin peaks' both the series & movie. He's lady Gaga music, hollow under all the dress up.

    I think Dahmer is a 3 layered show. At first it seems like a macabre morbo show made to grab an audience obsessed with serial killers. Then, it’s actually a thoughtful essay about a serial killer pathos, narrated from the perspective of the ones who suffered the consequences: (parents, victims, family, neighbors), and the effect it had in the aftermath (social, media, legal, etc). But above that, the show seems also like another calculated corporate trick from a streaming platform to monetize from a tragedy. Overall it was still a good show.

    I just think its weird, like *on schedule* every few years theres always a show, movie, or documentary covering Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, and OJ for some reason. Its always those four that get coverage despite the fact there are other prolific killers/alleged killers.

    "Dahmer" was actually the first time Richard Jenkins didn't fully convince me because I feel there was a moment he went overboard: the first time he burst out into shock seemed very forced and not congruent with how he played Dahmer's father. The second time he became shocked was much better and felt more in line with all the repressed emotions.

    I really enjoyed The People vs. O.J. Simpson. I thought that that show did a really good job examining every single perspective of that case, from O.J., to his defense, to the prosecution, to Marcia Clarke specifically and the sexism she was subjected to, to the JURY and the conditions they were under. I think ever since Murphy has been trying to recreate the lightning in a bottle success of that show, and it just doesn't work.

    I personally loved this show. One of the best series in quite some time. I am looking forward to future seasons; would like to see seasons based on Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy, or Gary Rdigway and BTK killer. This is on par with David Fincher’s Mindhunter in my opinion. That series was cancelled due to lack of viewership, and way more Hollywoodized than this show ever was. Also for the controversy I’ll say this, the filmmakers have every right to make whatever art they choose to make. I never felt once that this series was exploiting the victims families. I know it’s hard for them to stomach it but no one complains when they watch a WWII movie based on real events.

  • @Filimaua13
    @Filimaua13 2 года назад

    I agree with your point on Evan Peters. He had everything right.. but he just didn't capture this uneasy feeling or sense of something sinister or imposing underneath it all like the real Dahmer did. Tracy Edwards said in the trial "the man threatening me was not the man I met at the bar." It was like it was a completely different person.
    It is a shame that the show didn't own up to what it was. Would've been better as a series about the trial. If they were gonna go the "creative liberties" route it would have every episode centre around the life and eventual tragic demise of the victim then end the episode showing that it was a recount from a family member or something on the stand. It may not be realistic but its alot more respectful to the lives of the victims. It makes the series more of a celebration of the victims' lives and the effect this all had on the families and loved ones rather than focusing on Dahmer at all. It presents Dahmer as this distant figure we hardly know about, except for the fact he is connected to all of their stories. This is where you can get the actual social commentary angle in a more authentic way since its actually focused on the victims. A more accurate depiction of Glenda's presence in the story would be much appreciated too. She didn't have that much involvement in the story but her presence is still just as important in showing how apathetic and careless the police officers' response to the situation was.
    People say going into the lives of the victims would be boring storytelling but its not. There is way more interesting stuff out there regarding this case than simply Jeffrey Dahmer. Up until I saw Conversations with a Serial Killer, I didn't know about the fact one of the victims' friends at a time was suspected and possibly accused of the disappearance simply cos he was the last one to see him.
    The friend said the guy was with Jeffrey the last time he saw him, even dropping them off to Jeffrey's grandmother's. The audacity that it got to a point that they suspected he was making this "mysterious blonde man" up. And the friend was white! So it goes to show that racism isn't all there was to it. They just wanted to get this over with quickly not caring about what actually happened or who was actually responsible. Pure laziness.

    I finally broke down for a month of Netflix and I am part way through this. And I'm getting what you are saying. If the real Dahmer came off as portrayed here, no one would get near to him. And fetishization? Boy howdy.
    Also I think the story leans into Dahmer's own statement that he was 'born that way, while providing plenty of evidence that his father and birth mother were highly contributive to his psychosis. Current thinking on what creates such a person is that it is a combination of inborn factors that are activated by external stimuli, especially the parents. And what is portrayed of the parents here are textbook signs of very serious problems. You seem to think Jenkins is simply showing us a normal parent. Whereas I think Jenkins himself would argue that you had a father completely blind to his son and his serious problems. The archetypal passive detached father, along with the truly disturbing mother. The recipe for serious mental damage in a child.

    What if there was some kind of mk-ultra stuff going on? And Jeff had handlers , including his father. And the series tries to reinforce the idea that it all happened 'organically'.... I have absolutely no proof of this but it crossed my mind as a possibility."don't ask, don't tell"

  • @pegacorn13
    @pegacorn13 2 года назад +2

    Hummm...I didn't see Dahmer's Dad as any sort of "normal" parent caught in extraordinary circumstances. I felt that he was the farthest away from "close" as you can get: no matter how hard he think he tried. Clearly Jeffrey Dahmer's lack of normal attachment had a lot to do with both of his parents. As for the social commentary in the series being profound? Not really. It's just the brutal reality of racism and homophobia. I think the show is very good and it succeeds in what it sets out to do: make you feel horrible. I never once felt sympathy for Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer. I think that even when they hinted at provoking that sympathy, they pulled it back so quickly that we aren't even allowed to feel it at all.

    I thought the horror and suspense elements of the show were effective and gripping. Some of the material on the victims and the neighbor was worthwhile. But by the last episode I was disgusted by the reductiveness and hypocrisy. The show's racial politics were so extreme as to be ridiculous. All people of color are saintly, all white people are self-serving scum or worse. (The only remotely sympathetic white character may be the stepmother, played by Molly Ringwald). I point this out not because I'm a racist----I would have been just as disgusted had it been the reverse. I point it out because good creative work should have nuance and complexity, even in the current political climate. By the last couple of episodes, the noble speeches by black characters are piled on so thick and were so unreflective of the way real people speak, they become a kind of offensive stereotyping themselves. Then there was the pious hypocrisy of the ultimate ending, the honoring of the victims. This was after the show exploited them as characters in its horrorshow, meant to arouse the same kind of excitement in the viewer as any slasher film. They tried to have it both ways. I call bulls**t...

    they should have shown him in the prison lockers when that other inmate beat his brains out into the slimey pulp, as it still was when hidden within his skull....followed nOw by a truly outraged public 3rd party THEN the closer victims' families perspectives regarding the whY wasn't he placed in partial isolation constantly when in the main prison population?....so as he may live as long his suffering dictated.

    Very interesting approach. You've got a "European" point of view while reviewing which is what differs you from all the other people that do reviews! (And i'm saying this for good!) "Dahmer" is another Ryan Murphy product that lacks depth and the "rawness" of "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer", which was REALLY scary WITHOUT being torture porn or "controversial". It's just entertaining, yet shallow and, despite it's theme, crowd pleasing in a perverted way.

    I haven't seen this yet. Honestly, there's so much content out there, I have to pick my battles, and lately I've been focused on watching movies. When it comes to thrillers and serial killer stuff, I need there to be some real artistic weight behind the camera, or it just falls flat for me. I dislike America's fascination with this sort of thing, so I try not to add to that problem unless there's reason to think I might get something out of it. True Detective, for example, was a series I liked a lot, season 1 got a lot of buzz, and for good reason. Thanks for the review!

      I agree. Many people in my world are shocked because I’m the movie buff of the family and haven’t watched this (though it is a miniseries, it seems to be drawing more comparisons to film than television).
      I loved True Detective Season One, and I liked Season Two pretty well. I haven’t yet watched Season Three because it is, admittedly, both a disturbing and depressing series (which I don’t mind in small doses; ten plus hours per series is draining).
