    When I grew up the holy grail of casting reels was the Abu-Garcia Ambassador 5500C. I ordered one from Johnny Morris when his catalog was on news print. I still have it. You need to switch the centrifugal brakes around now and again, but it was a great reel. I’ve only used spinning for the last couple of decades. I may have to try out that new Shimano technology. My wife and I are in the process of moving from Islamorada to the “Forgotten Coast” and are looking forward to learning a new area.

    You're spot on as usual. $ on the reel not the rod, especially us bank beaters who crawl thru mangrove trails to honey holes. The rod becomes a consumable with a limited lifespan. I don't even use live shrimp on a spinner, haven't in decades.

    The biggest drawback of bait casters is they don't make that sweet drag sound a spinning reel does when a fish is taking line! I love that sound! lol. When my Chronarch bites the dust the Curado DC will be tops on my list., although I might get a BFS just for winter time sight fishing.

    I keep telling myself not to learn baitcasters because of money but they look fun. Does the gear ratio matter or do you have a suggestion? I see on Amazon they sell it as high gear or extra high gear. Do you ever use them to throw live bait with?

    • @flatsclasscharters
      @flatsclasscharters 3 года назад +1

      Jox- I don’t toss live bait really at all but a I would recommend the 7.4 gear ratio it allows you to cover water more efficiently

    I bought my Curados back in the 90s when I was predominately fishing the Potomac River for bass, and now you tell me i can fish them in the salt? Where you been all my life? I've been fishing spinning gear exclusively for inshore/flats. I guess that needs to change. Got a couple of Scorpions I picked up in Japan about 15 years ago, great for smaller lures for bass. I also have a couple of the workhorse Ambassadeurs. Guess I gotta give them all a chance in the salt.

    Captain how heavy can you go with mono leader and not diminish the action of the 27MR?

    • @flatsclasscharters
      @flatsclasscharters 3 года назад +2

      I like starting with 30lb. But if you need heavier bite section like in snook fishing for example. Then tie on 2.5’ of 25lb mono leader then add a 10” length of 40lb mono leader that way the lure keeps it action and you have the security of heavier leader.

    Love Your show; I truly have learned ALOT from you; HOWEVER, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree just a little. Let me say respectfully you have hook and loss more fish than I have hook so far in my life. And Like you I didn't have the Internet or RUclips. I grew up in the South Bronx watching William Conrad walking a beach with Penn 706z surf casting gear in the opening credit of Outdoor life tv show. If you take most if not all of the High End bait casters sold from 1975 to 1985; most of them could not effectively Throw a 1/16 , 1/8 , 3/16 or 1/4 oz. lure Because as I understood it, They were never initially engineered to throw those light lures; thus the reason why each lure had to be " calibrated " to the reel before use; something that's not done with spinning gear. Today, Yes you are able to throw those lures because of an electronic device incorporated into the reel. However; if you Remove the electronic aspect from the reel that adjust and or compensate for Human and environmental conditions, do you still have a reel worth $250 dollars ?? in other words; without the electronic aspect, how much better would this bait caster be to those high end models sold in the 70's and 80's ?? .. Again love your show..

    I guess a baitcasting reel is great while standing dry on a deck. Convince me it's possible for casting reel to survive the harsh conditions of surfcasting in hip deep water on a sandbar.

Finally, other manufactures like Diawa are stepping up their game producing compariibly better products
