So glad I came across this video, the screw design is perfect so I can switch out tube lengths. Great video!
Thanks.
Brilliant. I have been fly fishing for 30 years but could never fathom paying the main brand’s prices out of principality. Good video.
Great demonstration, I made very similar vault. One tip, make sure the holes allow for space of the screw on coupler inside the box. I drilled to close to outer edges so couldn’t lock down with coupler. Ended up using corner brackets on outer part.
Very creative and cost effective. Those fittings are called male and female adapters for future reference.
Thank you! Build this and it works amazing! Spent about $65 in Idaho! Way cheaper than anything else and it looks amazing!
Glad it helped!
Just made one for my Jeep Renegade which is too short to put a 10 foot rod inside it. Shear genius, Scott. Cheers from Pennsylvania and thanks a ton for sharing.
Thanks. Glad it helped.
That’s so damn cool and creative. Well done. Best rod rack I’ve seen by far.
Thanks 👍
Great Idea. I just completed a 4-banger. Works great. One comment for those planning on making one. Just make sure your stripping guide will pass thru the ABS fittings.
been wondering why most video I have seen of the ammo box holder only has 2 rods and why no one made one with 3-4 rods.
Oh my gosh, great idea. I like yours better than the tube ideas.
Thanks so much
One of the best DYI's for rod vault. Thanks.
Thank you.
I did it. Works pretty well havent had any problems. Only thing is that the pipe fittings didnt get that snug with the field box and the box is droopy. Thankfully hasnt affected the rods at all. Thinking about securing it with flex seal or something alike.
This is a great idea for a DIY. Did you notice the black made the rod holder too hot for the rods? Did dirt or dust enter the box while off road? And would you change anything about the design now that you have used it for a few years?
hi, is there a parts list? i want to make this this weekend and a parts list, specifically the couplers, would be helpful, thank you for this post!
Not all hero's wear capes ....you day man....
I don't fish, but I love to watch the adventures he goes on .
thank you
Great video, now all it needs Is the shopping list. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent idea Scott, only really works for fly rods/reels though, I'm a float/spinning fisherman myself and we don't have the luxury of the reel seat being at the foot of the rod :(. Although I suppose that it'd be an easy fix to mount a box that has no hinge for the lid and just a couple of those pop latches with an extended length of pipe which slides to accomodate the longer rod handle of spinners and float rods.
Very true! You can figure that out Sam :)
Make a cut out on the ammo box lid and attach more PVC to that bit. May have to play with the swing a bit, or use a real ammo can, the lid comes off easily with the hinge.
Such a rad idea! Thanks. Since I don’t have crossbars on the camper shell I’m wondering about installing the box on the crossbars above the windshield and the tubes pointing to the back except it might be a little harder to get rod and reel out
Great idea!
Very creative Scott! Your getaway truck just keeps getting better and better .
Thanks 👍
Great idea. I made two of them over the weekend. Thank!
Fantastic!
Love the video! Been wanting to do this for a long time.
You should!
Creative! I'll keep that in mind if I take up fishing. Love your channel!
Thank you.
Great creative solution ad DIY project Scott
Thanks Brad 👍
Thats cool! I just clamp my rods in a ski rack but they are still exposed to the elements.
Great DIY Project Scott... seems simple enough... Dennis
Thanks Dennis.
Well now, that is pretty slick. Nice job. 👍
Glad you like it!
Execlent idea! I’m building mine today! I wonder if I used a bigger (50 cal ammo box) I could have 4 holders as the reel may stand vertical.. and I’ll line the tubes with pipe insulation. Thanks for the video!
that is awesome, thank you!
You're welcome!
Such a kool fishing rod holder and easy to make. 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
This is genuinely so cool! Is there any way you could provide the names of the fittings? I plan on building one myself. Thanks!!!
Great idea!!!!
Nice! Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
No problem!
Creative genius!
Nice!
Good idea Scott.
Thanks 👍
Is the thought here that you can rig your fly rod and then pull it out and just start fishing? I would like to have my rod "ready to fish" and then go. Thanks for the great video!
Say i’m not clear on the box fittings. You call them couplers, but would like to know what they’re called on their labels. What I’ve found are pipe threaded fittings which yours don’t appear to be. Thanks for the great DIY.
Bob is not my uncle. Good video Scott! 👍😁
Very nice build! Did you consider pipe insulation to line the abs tubes?
Very cool stuff scott🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍💯💯
Do those tubes wiggle when driving?
Hi, do you have an extra support for the box on the end? In the video it looks like it's resting on something.
Great idea.
Very cool idea Scott. I was trying to notice if you had three support points for the pipe on top your truck. I wondering if the pipe would eventually sag with the conventional 2 crossbar system? Thanks for your help
Thanks. Glad it helped.
Thanks for the video, would be possible to know what the dimensions of the box is ? Is it External dimensions (L x W x H): 29.5 x 13 x 18 cm
Internal dimensions (L x W x H): 24 x 10 x 13 cm ? Cheers
Genius, some ammo cans come with a detachable lid, so if you have longer handles than a fly rod, you can just put them through
Hey Drenalin, what size circle cutter did you use for the 1 1/2” ABS pipe? I’ve bought 1 1/2” inch and 2” and both weren’t the right size. I would like to only buy one more. Thanks
I would like to know this too
Found the answer, above.
What size is the drill bit?
Amazing
I was going to build this for my trout spey rods but I can't find a box deep enough for the handles
Just ordered a Plano box. Off to the hardware store......
👍
Attempting this now...I can't get my fittings to really since down tight. Any issues with the front bouncing around too much? I'm putting this on a hatchback car with 11.5 ft of pipe. So I wasn't sure if there was a lot of flex.
Thanks for the video. Are you securing it to three cross bars or two? Any suggestions how to make one that is insulated?
I actually secure it to all four of my bars. I have 2 on my cap and 2 on my cab.
What size hole saw? I ruined one box already using a 2”
cool as mate
What do you do so that the rods, tips and guides aren't slapping on the pvc on rough roads and bumps - I tried this but had guides snap after two weeks of travel - still trying to figure out how to create some buffer on the interior as you'd find on the professionally built ones. Great ideas here - just trying to mod the rest of the way.
I put pipe insulation inside mine.
1-1/2” ABS, nothing to protect the rod inside the tubes?
i used ABS fittings. The fittings will not screw tight to the box. About 1/4" space between the flanges of the fittings??? now what??
Did you find a solution? My adapter is not snug, it flops around in the whole I cut out.
Cut off 1/4"-1/2" of the threads
Scott, this is an awesome design! I have been looking over several videos and this one seems the best for what I want, now I only hope that I can find all the components out here in Japan (ammo case might be tough, but I think I can find something similar). I do have one question for you: Not knowing the balance point of this box, do you think it would work on the roof of my Subaru Impreza or am I getting a bit too ambitious?
It might be a little too long for your roof line.
@@DrenalinAdventures Thank you for the answer. After this blizzard I will try visiting the hardware store to get a visual on it, you have raised the concern I had. Thanks again for the information!
How do you keep the tubes from sliding backwards in the U bolts? Just bolt pressure?
Yes.
Do you have the video on how to attach it to the roof rack?
I haven't made one that part.
Where did you find those u-bolts?? Can't find them anywhere down here in Hamilton and need to install the rack in a few weeks for an extended trip.
Home Depot
Great project. Looks like it will hang about 3ft in front of the roof of my 4Runner. How badly will these bounce around?
3 feet shouldn't be too bad. Just brace them well.
@@DrenalinAdventures suggestions on how to brace them?
I'm on a trip now. I'll get back to you with some photos.
@@DrenalinAdventures that would be great! Thank you. Enjoy your trip.
What are the dimensions of the ABS couplers that you used? And what dimension is your drill?
You'll need a 2 3/8 hole saw cutter for the 2" fittings.
Did you have any problems with the front ends of the PVC bowing down after a while?
Not yet.
You didn't seem to have any problem snugging the male/female couplers at the box. Is it because it's ABS? I tried some PVC at Home Depot but they won't close enough due to their thread design. My new nymph rod is being shipped and I'd like to have this ready for it. Thanks.
Yes, I used ABS and that's probably the difference. Tight lines.
@@DrenalinAdventures Finished my rack yesterday. Only problem I ran into was the stripping guide on my 8wt is too big for the 1 1/2 tubes. So, one of my tubes is a 2 incher. Thanks again for all the great info. It will be nice to have my longer rods already rigged when I get to the river. Also won't have to tear them down if I'm changing locations.
@@kevinfridman6154 Glad it helped. Tight Lines.
Can you guys plz give me the dimension of the circle saw you used for the 1 1/2 and 2”?
Thanks in advance!
Steven... Steven is my uncle
Ok so I bought everything and got my ammo box ready. I cant seem to get the ABS male and female parts to screw in all the way to pinch the box in between. What am i missing here?
So I think the threads get bigger and are designed not to thread all the way down?
@@scientificwon I put a wooden board in the bottom of mine to give it stability and solve that problem.
I cut a couple of 5/16" spacers from a 2" abs slip coupler. That way you won't have to screw them all the way down.
👍
USEE WHITE PAINT ,,BLACK WILL MAKE YOUR LINE FRAGILE IN SIX MONTHS OR LESS !
Could you explain that?
@@benbrown2021 Solar heat gain!
"Bob's your uncle" is something I've never heard before. So you're part Irish, then?
I actually am.
The problem with this is it's not very secure compared to the ones that are purpose built. Save your money and buy something this properly designed and tested. .
Let's be honest if someone truly wanted your rods it would be very easy to break into this contraption.
Locks are only meant to keep honest people out. Even if you bought a $1000 rod carrier, if someone wanted in there bad enough, they'd get in
@@Bradley-sl2uv Sure if you have a cutting torch you can get into just about anything. You'll trash the contents through .
Purpose built metal rod boxes can't just be broke in with just your bare hands or a screwdriver.
