An impactful fantasy story for me was the OG Dragon Age game. Very formative in shaping how I approach worldviews and appreciating different life experiences/different cultures/different perspectives on the world. It was also just one of the first dark/mature pieces of media I consumed as a young adult.
Final Fantasy IX had a huge impact in shaping my view on love and friendship. That was the time when I realized how much the fantasy genre could have a profound effect on one's life, and that's the reason why I believe it will always be my favorite piece of media :) I know that's not a movie or a book but I wanted to share anyways! When a movie like Princess Mononoke exists, it's just laughable to hear people say that fantasy is a lesser genre. At the end of the day fiction is fiction, and a compelling story is a compelling story, regardless of genre.
ARISTOTLE - why poetry is superior to "history" ...it is not the function of the poet to relate what has happened, but what may happen - what is possible according to the law of probability or necessity. The poet and the historian differ not by writing in verse or in prose. The work of Herodotus might be put into verse, and it would still be a species of history, with meter no less than without it. The true difference is that one relates what has happened, the other what may happen. Poetry, therefore, is a more philosophical and a higher thing than history: for poetry tends to express the universal, history the particular. (Poetics part 9)
Swords are cool, guns suck. An idiot can shoot a gun, but it takes a skilled warrior to wield a sword well. I can deal with perhaps victorian style weapons consisting of primarily single shot fire arms because they would still warrant carrying a sword should the single shot fail. But modern guns are boring and lack finesse, so it's fantasy all the way for me. Gladly back to reading Words of Radiance I go.
This podcast almost did the impossible and get me to agree with the guy to the right, as I also think sci-fi is a modern genre in the same vein as fantasy of asking what if, just with different tropes and elements. But then he said fantasy was impossible and sci-fi was improbably and both of them went off on very anachronistic attempt to pretend modern fantasy is equal to and contains old stories from the past and lost me completely. At least thanks to the guy to the right, I can now better classify a story about whether he will finish writing his book. It would be solidly in the fantasy genre

I’d define fantasy as a myth we can choose to believe even though it’s not a fact.
