  • Testing UK Pouring Mediums, including Owetrol, GAC 800, Pebeo, Liquatex and PVA Glue. This is a test that I have been meaning to do for quite a while and probably something I should have done when I first took the plunge into fluid art. For me the results were quite surprising! This has been split over 3 videos, due to the length of each one. If you are NOT a beginner, or you are very happy with your pouring medium, then these videos aren't really for you!

Hello Julie, a million thanks for your wonderfully explained video and to see a video and be in contact from someone who is actually in UK using products we can actually get in the UK is so good. Lovely as it is to hear Americans and Dutch presenters telling us all about their wonderful products, we simply cannot get them here in the UK! So frustrating. Swiping is my favourite technique and paper towel is what I use too, and it seems to give the best cells (for me anyway). I just love love love your 3 pictures and may try Pebeo medium as I like their products, but I use Liquitex mostly and Floetrol, both of which give me fairly good cells. I've got so bogged down with watching videos to perfect my techniques and end up throwing away so many canvasses, as they end up really rubbish, so your video is hugely helpful. Thank you so much for your kindness in sharing. Heather

Hello Jolie! Thank you for your kind comments. This video was a while ago now, I actually only use PVA now as it’s by far the cheapest option. What is more important is consistency and understanding paint densities. So if you swipe with a heavier paint it will sink through the others and give you effects. Amsterdam titanium white and black will do the job nicely. If you watch my beginners series, I think it explains it all. Any questions don’t hesitate to message me directly and I will see if I can help x

Hello, Julie, thank you for testing these UK Pouring Mediums. I especially appreciate that you've shared so much basic information in a very clear and concise manner! Artists, especially beginning pour artists, really need that information. Julie, you always are so thoughtful and kind to shout out other artists, and that's greatly appreciated, too!
BTW, I hope you feel free to answer viewers' questions when you are in Heather's lives (Heather Mader Art). Often, I'm Heather's only moderator and I cannot always answer all questions. Also, I have more background in brush painting than in pouring.
I royally ruined a painting with the thumb on a glove-balloon and had to turn the entire canvas into a swipe. Heather pushes the blown-up thumb inside of the glove-balloon and then sticks her thumb into it. She said that it gives her a better grip. I haven't messed up a canvas since I've started using her method. When I want the "little dipper," I just pop the thumb out of the glove.

Cheryl Walrath-Duran hi Cheryl, I am more than happy to answer people’s questions and queries... as far as I am able! that’s why I put my email address in the description. I forgot about the thumb being pushed down!!! Thanks for pointing that one out!! Yes, I have done it before too!!

Thanks for the learning opportunity❤️👏👏👏! I really enjoyed this video. In Poland we have only Owatrol floetrol available (and some other mediums). I have noticed that it doesnt cell as much. I try to work with it by mixing it with different paint brands and there sure is difference.

It’s been a long time since I have used Owatrol! I stick with PVA glue now. Owatrol is just too expensive and I didn’t get great results… I can get some lovely effects with glue. This video was a while now and I have done lots of experiments since. I don’t always like lots of reactions happening in my paintings… and when I do it’s only over part of a painting. Thank you so much for watching Beata, I love reading and replying to people’s comments x

I'm only 2 mins in and I already appreciate this video. I thought I was the only one having problems with floetrol. Its quite frustrating the lack of cells. Now I can't get floetrol or gac 800. I keep wondering whats happening. How do you get floetrol or gac 800? Pls

You can get Aussie floetrol here
      www.acrylicpouringsupplies.co.uk/
I hardly use floetrol now! I get better results using PVA and water. Much cheaper too!

    • @JulieVatcherArtist
      @JulieVatcherArtist  3 года назад +2

@@toodle6418 yes, use ‘no nonsense PVA’ from Screwfix. Mix 700ml of PVA with 300 ml water. That will give you a decent amount to use. Then mix 1 part paint and 2 parts PM. You will need to add more water in various amounts to get all your paints to the same consistencies. The only exception to this is if you use golden fluids, mix 1 part paint to up to 5 parts PM as it’s highly pigmented. Always happy to answer questions x

Not new to art but new to fluid techniques and have been totally fed up with buying stuff Americans and aussie artists recommend. We buy it and get nothing like what they do. We're now skint and starting from the bottom up with the stuff we can get. We used owatrol but found no cells to speak of. Seems they changed recipe of it. We've gone back to pva bond from screw fix. Do you make yours 500ml pva 200 water? We are thrilled to have found you and love what we've watched so far. Your art is beautiful. Also we're impressed you actually reply to people. We will watch your vids in order now. Thank you so much for being available on RUclips! We have been seeking all the Brits out 😂 so few of us! Thank you thank you thank you! 🤗 Sarah & Adam. X

Hello Sara, so nice of you to watch! It’s been a while since I did this video, I really ought to watch it through again. I use PVA from dryad education now. I changed recently from no nonsense PVA as I think they have recently changed the mixture, I had all sorts of problems with paint splitting. I mix my PVA 700ml water and 300ml of water. Then I mix one part of my PVA mix to one part paint, then water to the correct consistency. It is an expensive process, but I think it’s very important to use UK products that are easily accessible to everyone. You may find my beginners videos helpful as they start from scratch. I also run workshops on saturdays, depending on where you are in the uk. I have had people come and stay in a local hotel before! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me through my website or message me on Facebook 😊

@@JulieVatcherArtist Hi Julie. Thanks so much for replying. 🤗 Funny you mention splitting. We had hobbycraft medium from when we didn't know any better and that was fine but I've noticed with this builders pva that when I mix iridescent with it made into medium it separates and looks like when buttercream is a bit melty. Any idea how to combat it? Just thinning it down? We are going to work through your videos from oldest to newest. Thank you so much. Oh, we're in Cheshire. Thrilled to have found you. Your work is lovely and massively appreciated in this house 🤗. Sarah x

@@sarahbird9267 I have never used Hobbycraft medium and never will. If it’s the same stuff their pre-mixed paints are made of, then it just doesn’t work. Also if you have had pouring medium or paints for a long time say in the cold, you will get splitting. I always try and use leftover paints up straight away. In theory they should stay fresh if you put a lid on them, but the temperature they are stored at plays a big part.

Unless I know exactly how you are mixing with the PVA, it’s difficult to comment.

@@JulieVatcherArtist early bird! 🤗 We had been using a 500 200 method but followed your ratio last night. The only other time we've had anything like this was a few weeks ago when we first mixed our own pm and I don't think I'd stirred it up enough. Even weirder is that it is the same blue green Pébéo dyna that ended up looking like curdled buttercream. The violet one did a little last time but this time was OK. Colours are fairy muted though (I mix and pot up 50ml of my core/come back to colours). I'm going to see how they are this morning and maybe try thinning them down? Thanks so much for your help. It's so appreciated. I keep telling Adam this is way more science based than any other art. Everything has to come together with precision - more so than baking (and my buttercream comparison) and the bit we are struggling with is not knowing the saves and how to combat when things go wrong. Meh. X
