I have to stand up for my boy Brock here.
He took care of all of his little siblings and worked at I think 16 years old, and only stopped working and going after his dream of becoming a Pokemon breeder after his father came home to take over the responsibilities.
So, he didn't really ditch his family he just wanted to follow his own dreams.

Reading this made me realize it wasn’t a 5 minute podcast, it’s a whole hour
Exchanging Pokémon cards was such an issue, or “distraction” as my school put it, that they made an announcement that Pokémon cards were banned and anyone caught with Pokémon cards would be sent to detention. That actually made more people exchange these cards because we felt cool breaking the rules. XD

Yea love that too. I once tried to hear Rant Cafe podcast and it's so hard to understand what they're saying. When i listen to a podcast, ofc i wanna hear everybody's opinions and understanding what they're talking and also what they're tryna discuss. But i can't do it when i listening to Rant Cafe, it's like everyone talks at the same time. Especially English is not my native language, i mean i understand English but if 4-5 people speaks at the same time it's kinda confusing, like which one do i have to listen to, in the end i just don't understand the conversation at all

I feel like without toonami a lot of people wouldn’t have known what anime is lol.
My mom had a VHS of Fist of the North Star, which I watched at 7 (completely gruesome and lots of swearing, lol). But I knew the animation was very unique from the cartoons i watched. Then Toonami came along (first taste of Toonami would be the Midnight Sun late night version) and I saw my older brother watching Dragonball Z uncut and I remember getting a feeling of deja vu (I have been in this place before) that the animation style was familiar. It felt like saying hello to an old friend. Toonami solidified my curiosity of anime. But it was when I discovered Inuyasha with Adult Swim, the first anime I discovered all on my own, which finally made it clear I was in love with this medium.
On this topic, my mom has always only vaguely been interested in anime, mainly just listening to me and my siblings talk about it. Tell me why she informed last week she's already on season 3 of My Hero Academia and is watching Parasyte on Netflix? I'm grown, in my own house, so it's not like I'm around her to see her get into anime so this blindsided me completely. She's really excited, especially about MHA and it was amazing having a conversation about anime with her and she for the first time, knows even more than I do as I don't fully remember the earlier seasons. She wants to watch One Punch Man next. Good choice! After she's more comfortable with anime, I'll recommend Death Note to her. She also wants to watch Naruto...and yes, she knows it's two very long portions. Still, I'm happy she's joining to weeb side more :)

@@こなた-m1o conversational Japanese is harder to learn from anime bc let's be honest you won't have to tear Oppai and ochinchin while trying to get your groceries. Plus learning Japanese while learning the alphabet makes it easier to understand and be proficient in the language

@@こなた-m1o he learned from children anime and his own mother speaking to him in Japanese. It's quite different than learning from the anime we watch. And unlike with English, formal and informal japanese are very very different.
If you know arabic for example, it's a similar situation. Don't learn arabic from tv shows cause you'll be learning a dialect rather than the actual language. (Now arabic dubbed anime are an amazing way to learn Arabic and one of the few reasons my standard arabic is decent is because I grew up with arabic dubs since I remember)

I watched Takeshi’s Castle’s Hindi dub when I was 5 or 6 and I didn’t what was going on and I always thought it was impossible to complete it since I never saw any episodes where there were victors.

Being a giant nerd in addition to my weebness, I was the only kid in our school that actually learned the rules of Pokémon TCG and tried to explain them to other kids and make them play the game with me. However, they thought it was too complicated and more boring than simply collecting the cards, so I coudn't find anyone to play with. I was heartbroken, but then my grandpa noticed and he learned the game so I would have someone to play with!

I think most weebs had their "no anime" gap at some point in their lifes. Mine was when I was 12-13, I legit cried my soul out because the cartoon channel would stop airing Inazuma Eleven after the current arc, and when it ended I was destroyed. My little sister then made fun of me for liking anime and crying about it and it left a scar, so I stopped watching anime until 2017 when I turned 18. Also because none of my friends were into it (they're still not lmao) and I had no one to talk to about it, and kids in my school would destroy anyone who liked anime back then, and I didn't wanna give people another reason to bully me so yeah that's basically it

Growing up in India is wierd when you start watching Anime. You watch stuff like Doremon in Hindi dub and you think its a hindi show, but then learn its from somehwere else.

school days for 3 episodes is like a 6/10 its fine the last 2 episodes are like a 9....the issue is episodes 4-11 make you feel so dirty and gross
6-7 overal is kinda the fitting rating.. its not terrible... the main character is just unlikeable after the first few eps and he is bland in the original game..
I enjoyed it enough to get the videogames.. though WAAAAY later with the english translation coming out at jast
And the videogames are a lot better.. at least you can makoto a lot more likeable

I started watching anime at 7 because my dad loved it, and he bought me a bunch of manga, a he had the full seasons of Dragon Ball, and I had absolutely no clue it was “anime” I genuinely just thought it was regular cartoons and picture books.i found out because I made dragon ball references at school and no one got it, and then I realised no one around me knew what anime was.
Yeah I knew it was “anime” when the second arc of sailor moon first aired in the states and one of the antagonists said “so this is modern day Tokyo I put two and two together.

My dad got me into anime when I was 3 years old. (It’s weird since we come from a Mexican family) he saw the OG Dragon ball dubbed in Spanish (Latino version) and I got hooked. I also watch sailor moon, Ranma 1/2 and the soccer anime. There was absolutely no anime in the US until 4-5 years later. It was so weird hearing dragon ball z in US English since I’ve heard it in Japanese and Latino Spanish first.
Joey's the kinda guy to walk across burning hot coal as long as they gave him an alright burger at the end. He'd probably rate it a 10/10 too.

It is weird but a in Latin America anime was pretty well known. My mom watched a lot while growing up like Marco, Candy, Angel, Heidi and other old anime that were very European like aesthetically. Anime here kept the original Japanese names. In comparison to the US, Latin America has a hardcore otaku culture.
I still remember that I woke up to watch Slam Dunk with my brother on the weekends and singing the opening. I watched samurai champloo, samurai x and more in toonami at like 2am. Also spent whole afternoons watching Doraemon, Detective Conan, Hunter x hunter, Zoids, Tenchi Muyo and more in national tv, which I think now that was the coolest thing ever.

Japan wanted to expand their market and decided to offer a variety of shows to the US, but they rejected almost everything plus only accepting a few selected if they had control to heavy sensor and change the actual stories of them.
After that Japan decided to basically offer the rest to Latin America and to their surprise, we loved it and even wanted more.

As a 14 year old American, I can say that I lived in the middle of the golden age and the less golden age of cartoon network. It was basically the time when there was boomerang showing 90's cartoons, and cartoon network played Canadian films like Total Drama. I can be (kinda) proud to say that I have seen almost all versions of Scooby Doo!

I just noticed that their childhood of being introduced to anime is nearly the exact same as mine even though I’m several years younger than them. First anime were Pokémon, Yugi-Oh, Beyblade, Bakugan, Naruto, Dragon Ball, etc. People got Pokémon cards and didn’t know how to play, get bullied by that one group who thinks anime is weird. The only difference I had was that I found anime at around 6-8 years old because I figured out Nintendo was a Japanese company, along with Pokémon.

South east asian here, people here grew up with doraemon, shin chan, kochi kame, kitrestu, ninja hatori, perman and stuff like that but from country we definitely had animax so I watched slam dunk, ghost in the shell when I was kid.
Yup I grew in Southeast Asia too (my fave are Hagemaru, Asari-chan and Shin chan and etc) and I always watch the localized dub (it kinda suck) and I always thank animax for introducing me to the world of Anime (Hell girl and law of Ueki ftw)

@@christophersummers1939It's good to hear from a couple of others from my generation. I rememebr taping Robotech off the TV in the mornings and having dozens of tapes stored away. I kept them for a while even after I bought the DVD's in the late 90's for nostalgia reasons.
I was born in 84 and remember stumbling across anime VHS tapes in a Hasting's and thinking "This is the same type of animation as Sailor Moon I have to see these." and they actually had a couple of full season or even series runs.
For years I thought that ninja scroll, fist of the north star and neon genesis were the first animes I watched, but when I think about it, I was watching astro boy, sailor moon and speed racer as a small child
