@@Elitus no, not nowadays. That was always their purpose. A lot of ppl seem to forget that anime’s main purpose within the industry’s classic business model is just a glorified advertisement. Anime was always meant as a teaser for ppl to then go buy the manga it derives from along with a shit ton of merchandise. But said ‘advertisement’ was so grandiose that it has kinda grew into its own thing and subculture that is booming (and has boomed a few times in the past) entirely separate from its mother industry, the mangas. Anime was always just the flare gun to signal for attendance in the forest of manga. It has been, and will continue to, become its own thing as it goes further and more and more original anime are produced (meaning without any manga backing) especially with the sheer volume of consumers are who literally anime only and will remain that way.

I relate with Conner. I only watch anime once in a while, I don’t really get into watching Seasonal Anime because I think that’s just too much to keep track, I’ve yet to watch any super popular series like AOT, MHA, The Promised Neverland and Demon Slayer because I just forget sometimes, I don’t watch VTubers, I watch anime dubs, with a few exceptions and I’m Shounen trash because I’m was part of the MILLIONS of American DBZ fans growing up, and I grew up with Yu-Gi-Oh because I wasn’t a Pokémon guy. Then from 2008 to 2012, I had that period of thinking I was “too old” for anime when I was in high school, until I watched Death Note and that reignited my enjoyment of anime. So that’s me.
Recently, I just started getting into the Gundam franchise on Hulu starting with the 08th MS Team, then I’ll watch The Origin, maybe Unicorn because they’re all in UC and finally Gundam Wing, the big popular one that defined a generation on Toonami.

@@ducktrapper483 I think this would be a slightly better category of the different tiers of an anime fan:
Normie (the majority of people on Earth) - Someone who doesn't watch and/or doesn't care about anime
Anime fan (A.K.A. level 1 Anime Fan)- Someone who watches anime like a traditional TV show/movie (probably is watching shows such as Pokemon, DBZ, Naruto, Demon Slayer, MHA, Attack on Titan, etc.)
Level 2 Anime Fan (the majority of Anime Fans) - Someone who watches anime on a normal basis, probably has a waifu/husbando as well but they don't care about waifu/husbando wars, Vtubers, seasonal anime, etc. They probably also play some anime styled games like Pokemon, Persona, Fire Emblem, etc. but they don't play light novels or anything most people would consider "weird." They probably have an anime profile pic as well.
Level 3 Anime Fan - Someone who definitely has at least 1 waifu/husbando, plays a good amount of anime games, and watches a lot of anime. This type of person probably also reads a few manga/light novel series as well but they don't dump tens of hundreds or thousands of $$$ into them. They probably also have at least 1 thing of merchandise that is related to anime whether it be a plush, poster, figure, etc. This person probably also watches at least a little bit of "offbrand anime" as well (if you know what I mean...)
Weeb (the highest level you can go before creating an obsession) - This person knows about Japanese culture, absolutely loves anime, plays many anime games, reads a good amount of manga/light novels, definitely watches "offbrand anime," watches Vtubers, buys anime merch, etc. While these types of fans involve themselves somewhat heavily into the anime community and culture, they DON'T create an unhealthy obsession out of it.
Anime Elitist - These types of people have watched MANY anime series and have identified what they believe are "good" anime and "bad" anime. These people LOVE to make fun of other people's taste in anime and are usually the first or second category of anime fans to drive other anime fans away from the scene.
Manga Elitist - These types of people make fun of others for enjoying anime over manga and are just like Anime Elitists, but they primarily focus on manga over anime. Manga Elitists also tend to make fun of someone's taste in manga but they don't do it to the degree that Anime Elitists do to other people's taste in anime. Despite this, Manga Elitists are worse than Anime Elitists because they look down on anyone who prefers watching anime over reading manga. That's a problem because manga is much more expensive and less accessible compared to anime were it is much more accessible.
Weeaboo (Only applies to non-Japanese anime fans) - These types of people have an obsession with anything Japan related (especially if it relates to anime, manga, or "offbrand"). They tend to do crazy and/or cringey things that make the anime community look bad.
Otaku - Basically a Weeaboo, but Otaku primarily applies to Japanese anime fans. Otaku = Japanese Weeaboo. Unlike Weeaboo however, even non-Japanese anime fans can be called Otaku whereas Weeaboo can ONLY apply to non-Japanese fans whilst Otaku can be applied to EVERYONE.
Gatekeeper - Someone who doesn't want too many people to be involved in the anime community and they personally feel that if too many people get in, the new anime fans would ruin anime entirely. This is a very bad mindset to have and should not be tolerated.
Extremist - This category is self explanatory...

I agree with all of this very much. I’m a chemistry undergrad and my roommates and I were all the kind of people to watch 2-4 episodes of anime a day while in high school and ever since starting college/university in Fall 2019, our habits have drastically changed. We still very much enjoy anime games, we tend to play those a lot, but our watching habits have almost completely fizzled out. Vtubers hit us hard and we all have our favorites with our RUclips recommended filled with the latest Hololive stuff and such. So looking back on it, 2020 was probably the first time in a decade where I didn’t watch nearly any anime or kept up with the seasonal titles. All that being said, I still feel like the anime culture is a part of me though through things like anime memes, vtubers, anime games, or the sprinkling of shows I do/will still inevitably watch.

Isn't it just the fact that the anime fanbase grew and so did the variety of approaches? In which case Connor actually represents the newer anime fan model... so who's the boomer now xp

why am i actually having some sort of identity crisis about my not caring particularly about anime anymore. i've kept quiet about watching anime for years, only to have my interest peter out as its entering mainstream, i feel kinda free but also kinda sad because i dont have enough to watch now

So here's my rant as: The reason why there was no anime content to talk about last year is because creators are too afraid to stray from the algorithmn. There's a a huge backlog of content waiting to be discovered by new fans, if creators would just get past the fear of it being "too old" for their followers to get interested in.

I hate anyone in any context that unironically uses the word ‘normie’ as an insult.

I agree. "normalfag" is better insult.

Was it REALLY ironic though? Gigguk used to say that kind of thing ironically but at this point he’s descended to practically the same levels of cancerous weeaboo as Joey TheAnimeMan himself. Maybe even a little worse.

I agree with most of those guys takes, but 2020 was a great year for anime and lots of discussions (and even broken records) were had. I think Covid last year made them a bit blind. Lots of greats originals last year too like Deca Dence, Akudama Drive or Appare Ranman for example.

God, I'm glad someone said it. Deca-dence is so mid, probably even lower than mid if the animation wasn't as good.

Here I am obsessed with BL mangas. I watched like 100+ anime but my manga exceeds 200 most of them being shoujo or bl. While I watch anime that's anything but romance related. The thing is I've been into anime for more than 5 years while I've been reading manga for like 3 years. Last year I watched the least amount of anime and read the most amount of manga and also got into genshin impact and some vtubers(I didn't know vtubers was also a weeb culture then lol). I still watch kdrama, sometimes jdrama and stuff. Occasionally movies. Idk if I'm a weeb or not lmao. It feels like I'm more of a bl addict.
