- This is a short record of my trip to Isle Royale in July 2012. I was in my Chesapeake 17. Day 1 was the trip from Copper Harbor to Rock Harbor via ferry, then around Blake's Point and into Duncan Bay via kayak. Day 2 saw a morning full of rain followed by a portage into Five Fingers Bay, then setting up camp at Belle Isle. Day 3 was exploring Amygdaloid Channel and Amygdaloid Island. Day four was a trip back around Blake's Point via the Voyageur II ferry and setting up camp on Tooker's Island. Day 5 I hiked to Mounts Franklin and Ojibway. Day 6 was the trip back home.
Fantastic trip. Kayakers sure do have it rough on the old portage! 😉 Tis just one of the reasons I canoe.
Hey thank you for sharing this wonderful video. Visiting Isle Royale is very high on my bucket list.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video. I need to get back there. I can't believe that was 8 years ago... back when the paint job on my kayak was still nice and fresh, haha. You should see it now. It's taken quite a number of beatings over the years. Anyway yeah, you should go next year. :)
Nice video! We did a circumav in August 2010 going clockwise from Rock Harbor. Good weather, winds and pushing seas, we finished in 5 days, but planned on 2-3 shore days that we never had to take. Heard much about Blake Point's treachery, but didn't encounter any. Even the long 10+ mile sheer rock face on the North side didnt' give us much problems.
I'm here because it's the middle of winter 2017 and I need my Minong fix. Thanks, you've got some good stuff.
nice video. thanks for the virtual vacation
Congratulations on your circumnavigation. Being there last summer has only whetted my appetite for more. I hope to do the circumnavigation sometime in the next few years.
Can you say "bucket list"? What an awe inspiring video journal...just....wow
What was the water temperature when you were there? Was it warmer in the coves and passageways also?
Nick, Very sorry to not have replied sooner. The water out on the big lake was still quite cold. But the coves and passageways, nice and warm. Warm enough to swim very comfortably. In fact it was weird how dramatic the difference was-- at 6:15 in the video, going from a channel to the open water, it was a very sudden and noticeable drop in the temperatures. A big unnerving actually.
This is spectacular.
sweet.good job on video!
What set up did you use for that footage? I'm going there this August and I'd like to get more than just still photos of my paddling. Very beautiful, as Isle Royale is always!!
I just had my little digital camera in a mini-tripod, and the mini-tripod was bunjeed to the deck in the deck cords. It was actually a bit precarious. You might check something called a "monster pod" which might be a good solution. Of course I dropped my camera in the water as I literally was getting out of the kayak for the last time. R.I.P.little camera.
You didn't have a waterproof case? I was thinking about getting a go pro but I wasn't sure if that'd be a good thing or if there was a better option.
Andrew Schigelone I wish I had a waterproof case or waterproof camera. I think a go pro is cool, but I think they are really wide angle, aren't they? and if so you'd probably have a hard time getting nice scenery shots. In the meantime I bought a Canon Powershot D20 waterproof camera, which is great for photos and videos but the sound quality really really stinks.
Andrew Schigelone I shot my own little trip video last summer at IRNP. You can check it out on my channel if you want. I shot most of my stuff with my Canon T3 DSLR. I also got all my water shots with my Gopro Hero 3 White Addition. I would check out George Desorts latest film, Fifty Lakes One Island. It's pretty great and he used minimal gear.
moterdirt I'd love to see your video but I go to your channel and I don't see any videos there. Is there some other link I should follow?
