It might be closer to Oslo than Edinburgh, but it's even closer to Tórshavn than Oslo ;)
There is a stone slab in Bressay that mentions a "Ann Naddodsdóttir" who is believed to be the daughter of the Faroe Islander Naddoddur, the Viking that discovered Iceland. He did not stay in Iceland though and sailed back to the Faroe Islands, because what kind of a madman would choose to live in Iceland instead of the Faroes? ;)

This is the best Up Helly Aa video that I’ve seen. It’s the best festival in Shetland and I’m proud to be a Shetlander!
Scotland 🏴 is so rich with culture. Before this channel I had no idea how mix it was of various nomad groups and the cultures they brought. We have a tendency of thinking of this land as one single identity which isn’t true. As always, another video well done.

Great video! One of my great grandfathers immigrated to America from the Shetlands in the late 1800s. My grandmother told me of our connection to "Northern Scotland" when I was young but I think even she didn't know the whole family history. I hope to take my sons to the Shetlands to experience their heritage and Up Helly Aa one day ... Again, great video!

I live in Shetland and my house is just below a viking ruin, it's always fun to walk up to it with friends and sometimes we even set up a tent just next to it and camp out for the night.
Really enjoyed this, I live in a village called Torrisholme in Morecambe Bay, we had a huge Viking jewellery find in nearby Silverdale Village, we have The Viking Hogback stone in nearby Heysham Village.

basically me no no, Viking culture is alive and well in Shetland and Orkney, and Celtic culture is alive and well in mainland Scotland.

It's not really 'Viking' culture at all, it's just a festival dreamed up in the 1870's by the local 'Total Abstinence Society' to try and deter the local youth from drunken rowdiness.
It's very impressive but very fake.

You should read up about The Clavie. It’s a Pictish New Years celebrations celebrated in my small village in the North East of Scotland. It’s been celebrated for hundreds of years and is a big part of our village. Loved this video!!
