I loved your video! I laughed, I cried, and now I want to visit even more than I did before watching it. The community spirit that Shetlanders devote to their beloved festival is heartwarming to see. Thank you sharing this delightfully informative video!
I was stationed in Shetland 1973 US Coast Guard Loran Station in Brae, and came upon the festival accidently. I was utterly amazed. Thanks for the background Marjolein . I hope to visit Shetland again.
I absolutely loves your video to explain it perfectly for me! I only knew about it from Netflix Shetland and needed to know more. I’m from an island off Canada, Newfoundland, and we share things I never knew about before. I was fascinated and when the crowd started to sing Sweet Caroline, my name, I almost cried. To know that you have such different and wonderful culture, even though you are Scottish, in a way you are completely separate, like Newfoundlanders and the rest of Canada. We have our own culture and are so proud of it. Thank you again.
what a well done video .. my mom was from Calderbank and I heard of Up Helly AA from a friend who's Norwegian .. after watching your video I MUST go .. if ONLY American's can travel to the UK again .. someday, someday ...
Saw this celebration in the series Shetland. I love traditions and was curious about it. So, I read a lot of articles. But, I have to say this is the best. A very thorough explanation. I am from the United States and I would like to see it in person someday in the future.
I’m reading Black Raven by Ann Cleeves.a book set in the Shetland Islands. Curious about the Up Helly Aa which is referred to a number of times I looked online and found your video! Its great and funny. I was laughing and also appreciating all the work and community spirit that goes jnto it. The novel which i refer to is also quite a good read!
Great job, Marjolein. I was in Lerwick in 1978 for Up Helly Aa. I was wee, so I just remember squads dressed as Superman. Went to Dunrossness Primary and lived in Spiggie.
Up Helly Aa my Travel and Tourism teacher was talking about that I saw that in my teachers board but not so much . Sad that the Up Helly Aa isn't happening this year . Thanks I really needed that
I had heard something about it years ago from our distant cousin, Robert Irving when we were in Portugal, he had been up there with the minesweepers, yes that's right, he was in the RN. Watching it on screen sure gave me some of the excitement experienced by the inhabitants and it was interesting to see a Douglas Johnstone although I never add an e on the end of my name but I believe there is a lot of my clan up there
@Carlos Saraiva Yes I did & would love to but I would need to update my passport and also getting there would be a little expensive. However I do have a lovely Portuguese neighbour called Lucy or Lucille. We have a good neighbour relationship.
Does anyone know what kind of greeting people say at Up Helly Aa? A certain catch-phrase - whether in English or Scots Gaelic? Do they actually say 'happy up helly aa' or something else?
"Often with craftsman-like quality" kinda undersells the fact that HOURS of someones life went into making all of them. With "craftsmen precision" makes it sound a bit better even if its apprentices. I spent TONS of time learning / making something that if it were described as "Jeweler like quality" I'd probably be slightly offended. Either way. Subbed thanks for showing a portion of your heritage that its awesome you guys carry on and semi-modernize!
Ah I like this. There should be a new show. Like NHK World's Journeys in Japan where a host on a bicycle or whathaveyou goes exploring the different microcultures and local crafts in the various prefectures, there could be Journeys in Scotland. Why not?
What a fabulous accent she has and very informative looks like an amazing festival but I’m still unclear why they do it except for fun and a community event for everyone to get busy and make stuff so they are all entertained for months.
It's a strong part of the Shetland culture. There's also stories of some ships of the Spanish Armada crashing on the shores of Shetland -- would explain Marjolein's dark hair. Something like that....
Beautifully done! Makes me so proud to have Shetland ancestors and wonderful cousins!

Delivered with lovely tongue in cheek humour , I learned a lot about it , brilliant

Really love your video. I cannot believe the amount of work that goes into the festivals! Thank you so much for sharing. I hope to visit some day!
I just got back from the Lerwick Up Helly A' and it was INCREDIBLE!! A truly amazing experience! 😁⚔️🏴🔥

Very nice presentation. On my bucketlist already for a long time.
Excellent! If you want to tick this one off your bucket list, we've more info here: www.shetland.org/things/events/culture-heritage/up-helly-aa
Be sure to go for the festivals that are inclusive like SMUHA and the other 10, the Lerwick one excludes women and girls.
Loved this, Marjolein. We have just booked to stay for the festival in 2023, fingers crossed that it goes ahead!
This is the best and most entertaining explanatory video I've ever seen! First Rate! Thank you for this terrific show!
Thoroughly explained and delightfully entertaining. Now I want to attend!
OH WOW !! I'll be at the Delting Up Helly Aa this year !!!..My family is Soooo Looking forward to it !!!.. and many more to come !! x
Brilliant! Pretty sure you're going to love it :)
Greetings from Denmark and thanks a lot for this wonderful presentation.
Awesome. It's interesting to reflect that such intricate and elaborate traditions end in totally nullifying the social effects of the severe climate.

Fabulous video! Covered every question a person might have. Thank you.
I just LOVE that accent!
Your the video very much. Very informative and a great presenter.
Have just put this on my to do list. Amazing video and presenter
I'm writing a short story about Helly Aa. I'd love to hear more and ask some questions. This has been so informative. Thanks!

A very informative presentation, and great fun to watch :)
Looks like an awesome festival to photograph. See you in 2022 !

This should have a lot more views and likes.
Thanks, never heard of this before.🙃
well done, lassie👍😜
The most important question is, where did you get the shirt? Awesome!!!

Ok, one for you! Mum is from Thurso, grandad from Lerwick, can I take part in up helly AA?
Does anyone know what kind of greeting people say at Up Helly Aa? A certain catch-phrase - whether in English or Scots Gaelic? Do they actually say 'happy up helly aa' or something else?
I love your accent. I'm a "Sooth Mooth" raised with Sassenachs.

18:17 tell me the name of the song, please
Now I want a Kraken button :(
So does Trump
@@skorrie3849 Too late, we released the Kraken on him.
Who are all the countries that celebrate this festival??
KING K it’s only the Shetland isles in Britain, I’m pretty sure nowhere else in the UK or the world celebrate it
Scotland, specifically the Shetland islands of Scotland. Can't you hear her Scottish accent.
What a fabulous accent she has and very informative looks like an amazing festival but I’m still unclear why they do it except for fun and a community event for everyone to get busy and make stuff so they are all entertained for months.

The winters are long.
Hey I'm from the south end....
sandwick
With the best festival SMUHA which welcomes everyone regardless of gender
How they do in faroe Island
geweldig!
The name of the festival makes me think 'Op Hellige Å' which means Up the Holy River in Danish. Is this also the local meaning of the name?
I luv the Female yarl
I know what up heliyer is because I was born in Aberdeen and lived in Shetland for a bit of my life
Muito melhor que carnaval
Release the Kraken! lmao
nords love a jarl
Didnt know everybody in Shetland supports Celtic!
This year's Guizer Jarl does, so it's his design on the galley :)
Every sister should have a "Release The Kraken" button for annoying brothers, terrible dates, door-to-door salespeople...
I'll pass.
E
Think this was the only year it’s ever been cancelled.... god damn covid 🤬
And this just rocketed to the top of my Bucket 🪣 list
