This an original Lalah Hathaway song she did on her first album released in 1990 call "Lalah Hathaway" . Snarky Puppy rearranged the song and she sang it. And this was the result!
Vesta did never record (or didn't release this song). The first recording I know of is Donna Washington, the second recording Brenda Russell (the songwriter), then Hathaway's version in '90. This Snarky Puppy/Lalah Hathaway version IMO is now the gold standard.* _______ *all the versions I mentioned I like
Correction: I'm Coming Back is Vesta's! There's even a video here of her singing that (with Vesta there) and she brought her OUT ON STAGE to start the song (absolutely precious)
She is perhaps the best or easily one of the best singers out, where is the justice in the music industry that we are celebrating people like Rihanna and not Queen Lalah!!!
Donny left his voice in Lalah but she has taken it to another level. When other singers are impressed with your talent, listen closely. Look up Lalah an Patti labelle's birthday party singing "Song for You." Ypu will be blown away, I's like she is channeling her dad.
I only wish Patti was sober to enjoy it (LOL)! That performance was one of the greatest and beautiful things I EVER WILL SEE!! OMG the part where it looked like Patti was trying to touch her boobs as she sang, but she's saying "that tone", trying to feel where it's coming from LOL
To answer you guys' question, if it hasn't already been answered, it's her song. The entire Snarky Puppy: Family Dinner album was them collaborating with artists they liked, such as Lalah Hathaway, and working with that artist to create brand new arrangements to already recorded songs of the guest artists. So it's Lalah's song but Snarky Puppy's musical arrangement.
i don't know how to explain it, but this might be the first time in my life i listened to someone singing scat and heard it as a musician performing a really tight jazz solo whose instrument just happens to be her voice, instead of just something for the singer to do while the band plays. maybe a combo of Ken Burn's jazz documentary, a couple youtube videos of basic music theory and her incredible talent, but the way she moves through the scales and manages to resolve everything is just masterful.
To answser your question about "whose song is it". Snarky Puppy pairs with an artist on their Family Dinner albums (doing 1 or 2 songs with each artist). They take an already existing song by the artist, and put their own take on it with the singer (e.g. Sing to the Moon by Laura Mvula). In this case Something was a song Lalah covered herself, but then came together with Snarky as well.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IT'S GONNA BE IN HEAVEN!! GOD ROCKIN' JUST LIKE YOU, HIGH ON HIS THRONE! YOU CAN'T PUT THAT MANY GREAT MUSICIANS IN ONE ROOM. AND YES, SHE WROTE THE SONG ALMOST BEFORE YOU GUYS WERE BORN!
I’ve seen a lot of reaction videos to Snarky Puppy and this track with Lalah but this is by far my favourite one. I just love how it just destroys them emotionally - pure human joy there.
I love Snarky Puppy, I love Lalah Hathaway (who is AHHHMAZING) & I love you guys channel! Because you react to awesome videos like this, that's why I subscribed! This is one of my fav Snarky Puppy videos. 👍🏾👏🏾😩
She explains it on the Terrell Show. Her doctor x-rayed her chords while she hit the note. ...something about her vocal chords working individually. Check out the interview, that's my cliff notes version 🤣
Ciarra Johnson I beg to differ!! It cemented her in the heart of many people!! People like myself who have followed her consistently from the beginning!!!
Oh my god. She pretty much sang a chord with her voice or an interval. I can't really tell if it's two notes or three but that is amazing nonetheless. That's why everybody was staring in aw and pretty much started going crazy. She will forever go down as a vocal genius for even being able to do that.
Styl849 Also, it’s one thing to be able to sing an interval by yourself. That is a HUGE feat in Western music. But, with natural resonances, it’s possible for overtones. However, she gets the biggest reaction from the musicians when she shifts intervals on the last go around. No only can she do it, she can control it! That’s when they lose it!
@@JonMarM no one can sing 3 notes at the same time. Unless she has 2 tongues, she can divide the mouth into 2 passages at once, max. We're hearing 2 simultaneous notes, the fundamental and the resonating whistle.
She is ridiculous! I mean I am absolutely speechless. There are singers and then there is Layla on another stratosphere. I WILL be practicing my vocals to her videos. Jesus she is gifted as a mother FBOMB. I mean the things she does with her voice is not normal!
My sweet Father in Heaven! Lalah’s voice is unreal 😱. Please react to Snarky Puppy feat Jayna Brown, Snarky Puppy feat Shayna Steele and Snarky Puppy feat Chantae Cann ❤️
It should be noted Snarky Puppy won their first grammy for this recording… their first of many. Welcome to the Snarky Puppy rabbit hole… enjoy your stay. Check out the vid for “Don’t You Know”, featuring Jacob Collier; a love song in 14/4.
Hi. God knows that i blame myself because it's only tonight that i discover this great artist Lalah Hathaway. I'm french, i live in Martinique. That's too Bad they don't listen this kind of music here... Anyway. I had to understand How FABULOUS this woman is. Let me follow you Brothers, so i'll discover more good songs and artists. Thanks. Sorry for my english lol
Snarky re arranged the song. They didn’t write it. Lalah recorded this song years ago with a more conventional style. Snarly got into this song, deconstructed & with a Lalah, took it on a trip to another universe. Important fact, that Lalah is late great Donny Hathaway’s daughter. You should definitely check out his incredible work as well….similar voice to Stevie Wonder, & often collaborated with Roberta Flack. The technique that Lalah applied for singing 2 tones is called, ‘multi-phonics’, & I have no idea how she gets it to sound the way she does. There is an indigenous tribe of Mongolian male singers that do it, but one of the tones is super high, like an overtone whistle. You should try & check that out. Also check Lalah’s original recording of ‘Something’. Donny Hathaway’s work::Someday We’ll All Be Free; A Song For You; with Roberta Flack: Where is the Love; The Closer I Get To You; Back Together Again; You Are My Heaven.
This might be my favorite you tube ever! Watching someone react to my favorite song the way I react to it every time! And I listen to this song at least once a month for the past 7 years!! My dude in the stripes... that’s me EVERY TIME😅
No lie. I self harmonized once in my life, years ago, and scared the heck out of myself because I didn't know that that was even possible. But, Ms. Lalah Hathaway!! Good grief, woman!! How the heck can/do you self harmonize, period, and still be consistent?! What?!
Yall gotta watch Agnus Dei by Jotta A. It's a kids singing competition and he kills it. It's got like over 20 million views and no one's reacted to it.
I do have to ask.....is this how guys found them as well, and did you find SP to be and great group of musicians that live eat and breathe music? This song is a clinic huh
She just self harmonized! I fell out of my chair
Well, I keep on falling out of my chair, too!
that's not a new technique. Look up overtone singing. There are many cultures that a sub-category called "throat singing".
The band's reaction to it is PRICELESS

Check out Rachelle Ferrell...you're welcome!!! Her first album is called 'My First Instrument'
This song was originally off Lalah's first album and this was a total revamp of that song that came out in 1990!
Her polyphonic singing always gives me chills! 🔥🔥🔥
