The level of genius in Lennon's and McCartney's compositions (and pieces like "Martha" are compositions, not just songs) still blows my mind to this day! The rhythmic, chord structure and melodic complexities of this and other great songs, and the shear beauty of all those elements working together as they do still leaves me speechless when I hear again, 50 years later! Props to George Harrison too. Good job by these two kids.
I feel the same way. I'm old enough to remember when they were just a news item on a Pittsburgh rock and roll station. A few months later they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and took the world by storm. Even my father, a former country musician, found them impressive. Fifty-six years later they're still my favorite band, not because of nostalgia -- I love modern R&R as well -- but because they were so damned good. Every time I listen to "Abbey Road" I'm stunned by the writing, the musicianship, the vocal harmonies and the sheer beauty of their work.
@Frank Herrera Yes, I am well aware that later in their career Lennon and McCartney wrote separately, and anyone familiar with their work can easily distinguish one from the other. I only refer to the Lennon-McCartney song writing partnership under which all of their material with the Beatles is published regardless of which ever one actually wrote a particular song.
@Frank Herrera Paul once said in an interview that, as a teen, he aspired to write stuff like Cole Porter's and Gershwin's tunes. Great American Songbook. I think he could have done it, and he almost did it with "Martha." Also, "Here, There, and Everywhere," and "Yesterday." Granny tunes? Gimme more granny tunes!
