Gout actually saved my friend's life. He had severe alcoholism and started having different kind of diseases over it. He dismissed them all but Gout was so painful he couldnt ignore it or mask the pain by drinking it away. So he got it treated and as a side-effect a long period of treatment where no alcohol was allowed, he rehabilitated and has been sober since.

I am female and had gout in my big toe when I was in my early 30's. I was not overweight and didn't eat a rich diet or drink much, so who knows why. I was given a medication that turned my urine orange and very quickly the pain and swelling went away. I am now in my 70's and only ever had gout that one time, but once was enough!

Just so those are aware, a ketogenic diet, one that is rather high in meat, is a modern day treatment for gout. Gout is more of an obese alcoholic's disease than about meat consumption, as eating large quantities of meat alone cannot cause gout in and of itself, but alcohol consumption can increase uric acid levels which when combined with a high protein diet (meat or otherwise) in obese people. If you simply eat a lot of meat, refrain from alcohol, or just keep yourself at a healthy weight with normal physical activity, you won't get gout. If you don't drink water at all in favor of exclusively large amounts of wine, combine that with high protein, don't exercise, and become obese, you're likely to get gout.

I was 32 years old when I suffered gout. It is so true that when someone is so much so walking around you, you can feel the immense, intense agony of the air they’ve pushed around your gout afflicted area. The pain is unbearable, I’ve birthed 3 kids, my last kid almost killed me and I could say I would rather birth kids, and that is bad enough of the two evil things a human body can endure.

Two weeks suffering during my vaca time & off the chart agonizing pain all day and worse at night. If ever you feel it go to urgent care clinic ASAP. It would take a very strong pain medication to get any relief....besides using the colchicine medicine.

I used to suffer chronic gout. It started in my early 30's and in the end it was rampant. It used to alternate between my big toes and was basically increased to happening fortnightly. I beat it though. I completely deleted refined sugar from my diet. At first it was hard not eating chocolate, drinking fizzy drinks, no ice-cream, no biscuits and definitely no lollies (candy) At first my gout went absolutely crazy, longer and more intense episodes but gradually it began to settle down. I am now 46 and I haven't had a gout attack for 6 years or more. I still enjoy my meaty meals and I still drink as much beer as I like. Dumping refined sugar worked a treat for me. I hope this helps somebody.

I used to suffer from gout, the first episode went as follows: woke up to the amazing pain in my right toe. I describe a severe flareup as feeling like your toe was hit with a large hammer, and then set on fire, for real, that's how it would feel sometimes. I used medicine, then the old-school remedy of eating cherries, and reduced sweets, red meat, and shellfish. I'm gout free for years now.

My husband was diagnosed with gout in his 20' s. It is horrible when he has a flare up. I try to limit his intake of acidic foods, red meats, alcohol and sugary foods and drinks. When he does get a flare up, after so long he has me gently massage the area helping with his circulation. Although I try to get him to eat cherries or drink unsweetened cherry juice, he doesn't always listen. Also, after so long, he will purposely force the afflicted joint to be used to break up the uric acid. When I get him to drink water more, he has less and less severe flare ups. I have never heard of using charcoal.

My son, who passed last year from the affects of a rare form of gout, changed his diet, drank very little in his short 44 years. NONE of the diets worked for him. He stopped eating red meat, shell fish of any kind, spicy foods, etc and etc..
He suffered from 17 yrs of age until his death at 44. All the medicines combined with all the gout that attacked his entire body, shut his kidneys, killed his liver, spleen and pancreas. So after losing most of his toes and barely being able to walk, most of his life was spent in the most God awful pain anyone should have to endure. I do not find it comical at all that anyone would call this disease a rich mans disease. He was far from rich and nothing fun or funny came of his suffering. I feel sorry for anyone who has this awful disease. My heart is forever broken.

It was so painful I couldn’t walk. 2. Cut my liquor, meat and protein rich food.
    3. Avoided purine rich fish like mackerel etc.
    4. Prepared a drink with artichoke and lemon.
    5. Masturbated twice a day, it helped too.

I tried everything you tried...and yes for this story...even flogging the dolphin. Went cautiously back to some of my old habits and it all seemed to work for awhile. Until I learned that uric acid could remain high with no flares while uric crystal buildup continued. How I found that out was 5 years later...I no longer got gout flares in the toe. It moved to my knees and to repeat what one other commenter said, I'd stuff a kitten up a hen's ass to not get gout in the knees!

I also exercise daily and am at a healthy weight. I still suffered from high uric acid levels and gout attacks despite not following any of the things that would cause gout, and genetic testing has shown that I unfortunately have a gene that causes this high uric acid level. Thankfully allopurinol has relieved me of having anymore gout attacks in the future, but I'll have to take it for the rest of my life. Kind of a bummer.

About a decade ago--in my mid-fifties--I developed a tendency toward gout, which felt like someone dropping a bowling ball on my toe--for three straight days! Lost a lot of sleep. I got aggressive and cut all red meat, organ meat and shellfish out of my diet. My last attack happened when my sister-in-law tried to do me a favor by buying chicken frankfurters. A severe attack caused me to discover that even though the meat of the franks was chicken, the casings were still cow intestines--like for all other franks; and the label carried no warning. That was the end of that; my diet was greatly curtailed but my toe has been mercifully pain-free.

Drink lemon juice (squeeze the lemon from market, not any bottled juice) with normal temperature water everyday. Gout will go away.

Tart cherries also help remove uric acid from your system. And avoid leaded glass and pewter, especially when drinking alcohol, the dissolved lead greatly aggravates gout. (This is why the rich had so much gout in the past... the poor could not afford to store alcohol in pewter or leaded glass - crystal - bottles.)

I developed Gout in my wrist back in 1974. It was blamed on my habit of eating a pickled pig's foot when I worked night shift, we had a local bar that sold that wonder and I availed myself of it as a supper meal at 2:00 AM when the bar closed. After being diagnosed and put on medicine to help with the disorder I continued my midnight hog feed till I moved to another city and joined their PD. I visited an old German doctor who had served in WWII with the SS, he had a picture of himself in the SS Uniform in his office and always drove a classic Mercedes. He talked with me at great length and told me to stop the pigs feet. After six months off the hogs feet, my gout stopped and I was taken off the meds. I have now gone over 50 years without a pigs foot and without gout. I would thank the old doc but he passed on many decades ago.

It’s called “port toe” in Swedish from the Portuguese Wine

That’s really interesting because I’ve long suspected that Port triggers my gout.

In Spanish it's called "gota" which means "drop" (as in "water drop") and it probably is a bad English translation.

If you mix Black Cherry juice with water it will stop a gout flare up over night. Not Ocean Spray juice cocktail but real Black Cherry juice, most stores have it now. I take a water bottle and mix almost 50/50 and drink 2 or 3 of them throughout the day depending on how bad the pain is or sometimes even if my toe starts to get stiff just in case it is a gout flare up. Make sure you are close to a bathroom because you will pee for 2 days but the pain will be gone quick. By itself the stuff is pretty bad, almost syrup. But with water you can chug a whole bottle and its sweet like cranberry juice. I haven't been to the ER or the doctor in 5 years thanks to an old lady from my mom's church who told me about this, I am forever grateful.

Yes, a bowl full of raw black cherries seems to start working quicker than indomethacin meds (even more expensive though).
