CONFIRMATION, PLEASE READ: So, I've had a fair few comments saying that with Traveller's Tales being based in the UK, the game's original aim was for PAL and that it's actually NTSC speeding it up (rather than being made for NTSC and then PAL dragging it down). After asking Jon Burton via Twitter, he has now confirmed that this is NOT the case and it was always intended for NTSC. Source: twitter.com/JonTt/status/1341105836832092160?s=19

@Danny Sweeney Yeah total opposite of ''The Terminator'' by Probe Software UK who actually forgot to optimise the game for 60Hz resulting in really fast music. The LinKueiBR/DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL hack actually optimises the audio for 60Hz rather than 50Hz so the music matches the 50Hz speed.

It’s really surprising that they didn’t optimise it properly, but it doesn’t bother me really because I mostly play the PAL version and it feels almost too fast already, it must be crazy hard to control in the 60hz version. It feels very natural to me at 50hz, quite slippery and speedy, but once you get used to it it’s not that bad.

I've always played the NTSC version and I'd still say Sonic is very controllable. DX improves it obviously but I always still had a great time with the original. Honestly I think the aversion to the game (especially in the US) may have to do with our audience's general unfamiliarity with isometric platformers, whereas Europe had plenty of them!

    • @alfo2804
      @alfo2804 3 года назад

Not sure if this is a joke, but literally the only difference is that the PAL version supports PAL60, which means it runs in 60Hz and makes use of the higher vertical resolution. Other than that, 60Hz mode in PAL has identical performance to NTSC.
There is a 50Hz option in PAL, but this only makes it run in the lower vertical resolution and at 25fps - the game still runs at the same speed, just a bit choppier.

The reason why the game was never released in Japan on the Mega Drive is that the Mega Drive actually discontniuted in Japan at that moment.
The last released Mega Drive Game in Japan was Mahou Monogatari. Made by Compile.
The same think is with the saturn version. It was only released in Japan because they didnt had a Sonic Game for that console.
The thing I wonder, wasnt that game actually devolped to run better on Pal? TT is a britsh studio.

I did wonder but I'm not sure if it was made with PAL in mind; going by all my points. I think the slower speed on PAL is just a coincidence because when Jon (GameHut) makes a video relating to Sonic 3D, he's always demonstrating it in NTSC and not once (to my knowledge) has he mentioned about PAL or it being made with PAL in mind. I did contact Jon several months ago and recently again for an interview but unfortunately I never got a reply.

Jon was a little unactive as far I know, maybe thats why he wasnt responding. when you want I could try contacting him.
I need to correct my statement with the Saturn doesnt have a Sonic Game. Sonic Jam and R were released on Japan. But as far I know the Japan release of Flickies Island only happend because of not having more Sonic Games for the System. and it was very limited in Japan. After playing the JP Saturn version on Mednafen, I can confirm that the Panic Puppet music oddity is a regional difference. Not only that, but some zones like Rusty Ruin have had their act 1 & 2 tracks swapped for some bizarre reason. One positive note, however, is that the previously silent Special Stage results screen plays the act clear music in the JP version.

Rust Ruin's music is fine for me on my JP disc. Same with Special Stage clear music. Its just Panic Puppet act 2 being duplicated.

@@redhotsonic Oh, that must have been the wrong zone I was referring to. I could have sworn at least one of the zones had the act 1 & 2 music being swapped. Or was that because of the sound test?

@@stoopidmansidiot I thought the PC version swapped them over for some reason and not the Saturn?

@@redhotsonic I checked, and the PC version doesn't swap over the themes.
As for the whole act 1/2 music swap thing, that's probably just how the tracks are listed in the Sound Test. Sorry for jumping to conclusions!

Console games from the Mega Drive era tended not to implement their game logic/physics in a way that could easily be run at a variable framerate. With 2D sprites and tile-maps generated by the hardware, software could usually be confident of updating the game state in time for every single screen refresh (50 or 60 times a second), and if they ever over-ran, it was commonplace simply to allow the game to slow down. Therefore, game code would assume a steady 50 or 60 frames per second and set up the frame-to-frame speed of game objects and timers accordingly. Technically you could adjust these in-game speeds to account for the drop in frames per second going from NTSC to PAL, but there are several difficulties associated with this. Without going into too much detail, it would become a much more complicated job for QA to ensure the 50 and 60hz versions of the game played the same, and without bugs, if the game parameters were tweaked in this way. And given most people (at the time) would only ever see the gameplay in their native 50 or 60hz and not have a comparison to make, it probably made sense not to open this can of worms for most games. Once 3D games with their heavier and less consistent rendering workloads came along, it became more commonplace for game code to implement flexible frame rates, which would've had the side effect of making it easier to tweak the apparent speed of the game world universally.

2:02 I think that I know what's happening: As you explained in the Sonic CD video, the FMVs are at the same pace. Perhaps Sonic 3D Blast on the Genesis/Mega Drive was going for the same thing here.
7:12 That's because it's CD audio, like with Sonic CD.
P.S., maybe you could do Sonic Adventure 50Hz vs 60Hz?
