  • Gidday Team! Today we are topdressing near Rotorua in the North Island of New Zealand. Flying the Air Tractor. Join us as we go through a couple of loads and see things from the pilots perspective.
    We are spreading Lime (the mineral not the fruit) which is used throughout New Zealand to help bump up the pH. I have always found it amusing that we dig this mineral up from the ground only to tip it back on the ground, but the ground/soil is better off for it.
    Our aircraft is the Air Tractor AT-502B. Capable of carrying a payload of 1870kg and is a pleasure to fly.
    We are on the northern shores of Lake Rotorua operating off a local farm airstrip, purpose built for topdressing.
    Enjoy!

    Only last week I was thermalling in my glider during a competition, looking down from 4,000' at a Fletcher at about one-tenth of my altitude doing top-dressing runs. Neat to watch from that perspective.

    Great work Jimbo! I have seen similar aircraft’s towing soaring planes but more like the yellow one you were flying in your “Talk to ATC” video. Greetings from Sweden!

    Used to race home from school to sweep the heaps for planes that used a strip near home ... had Three James's Fletcher's going briefly one afternoon. One of them I believe was one of the old 310 hp Continental Mk1's? it had the most beautiful backfire as it throttled off on finals ... happy childhood days back in real NZ.

    • @johnkerr4645
      @johnkerr4645 Год назад +1

      Never heard of that happening here, but that is not to say it has never happened. They have had these style loaders in NZ for decades and they work well and are designed to be safe. I imagine the Auger trucks you guys use would be far too slow here when you take into account the average spreading time is 4 minutes or so.
