    I think the TMT technology, when using these console plugins on every mix channel, definitely makes THE difference. Just running audio through them without touching a knob does “something” I like in comparison to anything else in my arsenal of plugins. I love what they do so much, I bought them ALL (as in all of them, including Lindell 80, 50 series, console N, Focusrite SC, Amek 9099). And I use them all. As in, all SSL 4000 Es in this session, and all 80s series in that session.
    Incorporating the limitations mix engineers had in strictly using analog gear with these console plugins has aided tremendously in getting the results I want. Of course there’s been console plugins before these. However, I’ve never thought to use them on every channel before TMT.
    And I’m just realizing this video is 4 yrs old, so I feel like I’ve been living under a rock this entire time in thinking this tech was new.

    I think it’s worth mentioning that with the E (the one I bought), you only get THD when the EQ or compressor is active.
    With the EQ engaged you get odd harmonics, the level of which can be adjusted by the THD knob.
    With the compressor engaged you get mostly second harmonic which ISN’T affected by the THD knob.
    If neither is active there are no harmonics generated.

    • @brandon_henry_222
      @brandon_henry_222 9 месяцев назад

      Makes sense, that it would generate harmonics from the sound being modified by the strip, considering it's not a saturator.
      Thanks that is good to know 🙂

    Thanks for the video Michael. Much appreciated, I just bought the SSL E-Channel from Waves for $29 bucks, and I am installing it as I type this message. From what I see with the TMT and the BX console, it seems this is a beast. I'm hoping that I will be ok with the SSL I just bought from Waves. I've seen the Waves SSL for years and it seems like this is the move they should of made in upgrading their SSL E and G channels. But maybe down the line I might buy this, $299 is where it's at now. Whew! Dam BX SSL E channel is a dam BEAST!

    Hey Mike, could you please explain, in layman's terms, how to use metering in these BX SSL channel strips? It's not explained in the manual where the "sweet spot" is for these plugins, I don't know much to drive the input to get the right amount of the signal for the best performance. Usually I calibrate my VU meters around -18 dbfs RMS, but I don't understand how to use these SSL VU & dBu meters properly without having to refer to external meters.

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  5 лет назад +8

      Hi D S,
      Sorry I missed what should have been something obvious to cover. In a nutshell, these meters emulate the plasma meters that were designed for the SSL consoles back then. They are not digital meters in the same way that you would use a dBFS meter in your DAW.
      Essentially, the left meter represents a VU and the Right side a PPM meter that represented the peak voltage levels of the console. I would not use either of them for calibrating your audio signal unless you are familiar with them.
      My best advice is calibrate the waveform audio to an average level of -18 as long as peaks go no higher than -6 using a meter on the first insert slot. As long as you maintain unity gain through each plugin, your analog emulations will work at their optimum.
      Hope this helps...
      Mike

    Hi Mike, your videos are an absolute gold mine, so thank you for doing this. I wanted to know your take on the VU meters issue, which has been reported by some users of the Bx_Console series. They are saying that the metering is broken on these plugins. Indeed the readings don't match other VU meters in my tests. Is it a bug or just something we don't know about the way these meters function?

  • @BojanBojovic
    @BojanBojovic 2 года назад +1

    This 4000 is a very strange plugin, the input level to the compressor is somewhat low so it does not react properly unless the input is 6db higher. Also the saturation works only if the EQ is turned on, which is strange as the THD is located in the preamp section. They say it uses some automatic oversampling spanning fro 2x to 4x so it does introduce aliasing however not audible most of the time. And finally E and G compressors work exactly the same, Plugin Doctor does not show any difference other than few db louder harmonics, which is inaudible really.

    • @BojanBojovic
      @BojanBojovic 10 месяцев назад

      @@lucaszecat I do not think I have one really. I get similar results with all of them, or with using separate plugins so I use what i like at that particular moment. But now I really like the Analog Obsession CHANNEV for vocals, incredible saturation and de-esser, the best thing about it is that it is free and very honest in what it is and how it works compared to this expensive and gimmicky TMT nonsense.

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  6 лет назад +2

      Nice catch!v That explains the comment I made that the compressor was different. There is still a low level sound that exhibits the differences. Point being, it's not an exact copy of the prior version. Multiply this by 40 instantiations and the difference gets bigger.

    Thanks for this, Michael. Wow, quite a difference between those channels. When you hit the G channel, man it suddenly made the song sound so much like the mid-late 90s alt rock stuff on the radio of my childhood. Cool stuff! Since I have console 1's SSL which sounds more like the E(I think it's the E they modeled) I would probably go G. Sounds great. Do you put the Bworx new E above the latest UAD strip? I do love the tone of the UAD strip... though TMT looks awesome.

    • @YEE941

      Achase4u yea at the end he says it is the best it stands up with the best(uad)

    • @Achase4u
      @Achase4u 6 лет назад

      I get that it stands up with the best, but he more explicitly states the G is hands down the best(due in part to less competition) but I was curious among the more flooded E series market where the new SSL E Bwx ranked in his mind. He did say stands with the best which you are stating is UAD, however he himself didn't say UAD. He did say it probably stands at the top of the list, due in part to the TMT tech. I know these things are vague and can't really be quantified but I was hoping for a little more clarification since he has so much experience with all the plugs as well as years on the hardware. However these videos are not comparisons really, so I can understand why he doesn't want to go into comparisons to other plugins. At the same time, I can't help but wonder these comparisons as a potential buyer in a market with many choices. Guess I just need to demo the Bwx.

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  6 лет назад +1

      Perfect, exactly what I was trying to demonstrate! Console 1 is E emulation so getting the G would be a good compliment. I also like the UAD E channelstrip but the TMT makes this a better choice. Also, the full UAD E channelstrip is real CPU hog on the UA processors.

    • @Achase4u
      @Achase4u 6 лет назад

      Great info! Thanks so much! Thanks for taking me back to my youth, too :-) TMT sounds like a winner. UAD really limits their plugs with the resources! Happy mixing and keep up the vids please, we so enjoy them!
