During a live stream a couple of days ago, I decided to try a brand new plugin by Plugin Alliance; the Brainworx SSL 4000.
In today’s video I open up a session and mix with all 3 of these plugins!
The great thing about this is that Plugin Alliance + Brainworks are going to give away 3 copies of this plugin bundle!
    The bundle includes:
    • Brainworx bx_console SSL 4000 E
    • Brainworx bx_console SSL 4000 G
    • Brainworx bx_townhouse Buss Compressor
I’m really excited to try this out! The Townhouse made some of my favorite sounding records!
The Townhouse was a recording studio in West London, built by Richard Branson in 1978. Artists that recorded at Townhouse Studios included Elton John, Queen, Phil Collins, Asia, Coldplay, Muse, Duran Duran, XTC, Robbie Williams, Peter Gabriel, and many more!.
It was one of the greatest studios in the world, unfortunately it’s gone now!

Produce Like A Pro Warren thanks for everything, we are truly blessed to have you as our teacher and friend ..have a question tho..
When you get to master a song yourself which way is better ?
Master the song in the same session or render the mixdown and master in a completley new session??
Does it matter which way is better???
      Thank you ever so much

I've been looking for 'thst sound' for ages and bought the native Instruments ultimate bundle 1 because of the stuff you get in terms of sounds etc etc but because I read that the ssl emulations were decent, I read up on how to bus compress etc and was way closer than I'd ever been, then I bought the ssl native channel and holy fuck... I'm way closer to the pro sound in one swoop than ever. I'm no pro but I know what sounds good to my ears and with a few EQ tweeks and some glue compression I'm waaayyyy closer to where I want to be... I haven't tried the waves stuff etc, I jumped from NI solid mix to these... I EQ and level matched and attack and release matched as best I could and the difference is night and day to my ear. From now on it's going to be a touch of saturation on the tracks and then nothing but ssl EQ and compression on everything else unless I absolutely need to use something else. I've also been using k-20 and making sure none of my plugs are getting more than -18 and gain staging properly and I'm actually astonished at how much that can be achieved with just EQ and compression.

This was on sale a couple days ago for $50! I had to jump on it and....WOW! 100% better than the Waves SSL Channel.
For a real comparison, I took a previously completed mix and replaced all the Waves SSL with the BX SSL. Copied all the settings, just the different brand SSL. Same mix but I immediately heard extra depth, size in the low end a cleaner top end. The added features area a real beaut. I always wished I could just the SSL compression with a HP side chain, and here it is! Pumped to be exclusively using the BX SSL moving forward.

      @terrydoylemusic 6 лет назад +1

Be careful, you might find a reason to drop the SSL console! :-D I guess one question is do you put the plugin on every channel/group that you are sending out and duplicate the settings? (the plugin may not be exact) or do you try to get each channel/group to sound good with the plug-in and then compare? Either way it's not purely scientific which is why comparison threads on forums usually degenerate into big arguments. Maybe it's better to get the sound you want on the SSL and then for each channel/group try to match it with the plugins? Also, I would be very interested to hear your impression on stereo width and overall headroom and dynamics which is where I notice differences with my RND 5060 summing rig. There's a certain something about mixing voltage on copper wire, the summed effect of electronic component slew rates and subtle differences across channels that just sounds better to me.

Because I use reaper and there's no mono tracks, I noticed I actually prefer 'analog' mode over 'digital' even on low frequency sounds. Cool trick is put stereo version and mono sound, and unlink compressor and gate. Even HPF can add a little width to the sub bass.
If need to be mono, can put bx_solo after it or use monomaker plugin (but I like it be a little wider, prefer that sound in headphones)

Nice track Warren, one can always have two basses mixed in at various different levels, it works ?, a melodic and a slamming in your face only. People underestimate bass guitars, especially when they are played more like a guitar with lots of melodic content

That Townhouse sounds great. I admit, I like the sounds, you described as "crazy". Heck why not? Ok, your clients would mostly chuckle, but for me personally, I can imagine some overdose on quite some songs.
The only drawback is, I wanted to stop buying plugins for some time... I hope I'll keep it at least until Black Friday :)

The days of the true studios have left us - remember Strongroom, Church Studio, Master Room in Kilburn, Air-Edel, Nomis, Soho Recording, EMI, BBC Live Music, Polygram in Hammersmith, Eden Studios, Power Studios and of course, Metropolis! Those were ones just in London! It truly makes me rather sad.

Hey Warren. I just got the BX SSL plugins and starting to learn my way with it. I intend to use it on each track to emulate mixing with an analog console. Say i have 8 drum tracks and a mix buss for the drums, going to DRM mix buss, would you use the strip plugin on a buss as well? Or you'd prefer to use the townhouse plugin on the buss?
BTW, I learn so much from your videos, I admire your way of explaining and demonstrating.

I feel sort of stupid now. Thank you for mentioning (or implying) that the filters can double for high pass and LP. So accustomed to grabbing the built in Logic EQ to do that when I could have just used the SSL. Though, I guess they sound different and in some cases, one may want to do that. In any event, its another tool in the arsenal. Thank you.

how do you get the mouse adjustments on this thing to work high-up, like a normal plugin, instead of around the knob? love the channel, but that bi-dimensional mouse operation is killing me. and when i click on a knob it instantly snaps to the cursor position, which mucks up every setting i have dialed in, the moment i want to adjust it some more. how do you get rid of that? anybody know? thanks!

I’m from the new breed just learning audio engineering techniques and the channel strip plugins intimidate me! Why? Because I’ve never had to use the actual hardware, I’m used to Fabfilter style EQs, where the curves and audio are visualized. BUT, I want to learn. The good SSL plug-ins definitely have a specific character, and then there are plugins like the Lindell 80 that also impart a whole different flavor that seems difficult to achieve without learning this kind of interface. The slight variations between layouts with all these channel strips is also a pain point haha. Why can’t things just be in the same places?? 😂

Just picked up the SSL today because of an email from native instruments. Might be telling waves to move over soon... feel like I have a lot more control with the BW for some reason it kind of feels like I'm mixing on a desk especially the ability to choose different console channels and stuff. don't know what their differences are though. is there any way I could get it to act more like a desk in logic instead of closing the plugin window, moving on to another channel then re-inserting it on that second channel say if I have a 24 track session that I'm working in and I want to use 24 SSL channels? love ssl

Hey Warren, could you please explain, in layman's terms, how to use metering in these BX SSL channel strips? It's not explained in the manual where the "sweet spot" is for these plugins, I don't know much to drive the input to get the right amount of the signal for the best performance. Usually I calibrate my VU meters around -18 dbfs RMS, but I don't understand how to use these SSL VU & dBu meters properly without having to refer to external meters.
