TheNobleShade - I did. Are they implying we get rid of these things because they were originally racist (even if they're not anymore)? Because that's what it sounded like...
the thing is, now it is that it racism. but during that time, some people think it was just the norm like the cartoon. they were not as sensitive as they would be today and it is not entirely their fault because it was a different time then. It is good that we are moving forward and accepting the rights of other people but i believe it is wrong to say that all those people were racist because they have slaves, it was just the norm during that time and they did not know any better.
This is what I was thinking... Yeah, the music was used to make an extremely racist song. But can't we just know the song is actually Turkey in the Straw? Not the racist version?
Square dancing is a great, communal activity. It's also really popular in Japan and other countries. So, the fact that a racist guy promoted it doesn't make it a racist activity.
That's why Lavrentis wrote "change for the better". Also, nope. Democrats and Republicans both had their part in what has been "going downhill" in the US.
+Kekist I'm sorry you're confused. "Immigrants can and should settle here for a better life" and "There are anti-immigrant sentiments prevalent in our society" are not mutually exclusive truths. I subbed in "anti-immigrant" instead of "racist" because I think you were trying to say something along the lines of "If America is so bigoted, then why do you think undocumented immigrants should stay here and be victims of such bigotry?" and many of our immigrants are not black. Regardless, I think that we should create a more welcoming and tolerant society, not give up and say "well, there's racism, so oh well, I guess we have to let the racist ideas win". Would you care to explain specifically what you mean by "America is going down hill[sic]" and when exactly you consider the Democrats- who, reminder, are the minority in every branch of government at the federal level and in most states- "took over"?
For now, all I ask of Americans is to acknowledge this. Being not familiar with my own country's history (but it's current blatant racism), I think we all have plenty to reflect on and hopefully try to make things right and better.
This was without a doubt the funniest and most thought provoking segment Ive seen on any comedy show in recent history. Please do more of these I laughed so hard and was so horrified at the same time, good times.
Olga Pawlik and RESPECT MY AUTHORITY - The television show "The West Wing". The character CJ (played by Alison Janney) sits through a presentation about the design of the world map by a few "geography nerds". A point, if not the point, of the presentation is that the size of each country on global maps are not accurately proportional to actual geography (square mileage or acreage). Some global maps are designed to show certain countries larger than they actually are and other countries as smaller than their actual size. I imagine there is a clip of this episode online if you're curious to hear the actual exchange.
I had a two day course in high school a little more than ten years ago. I forgot to ask my friends kids if they had to do it. Oh! And I live in California. My teacher was a devout Christian, not sure if that had anything to do with it. After reading the comments above, I think I remember learning it in elementary too from my second grade Jewish teacher. I guess it's just ingrained in self so well into American culture that everyone us doing it.
Agreed. She should have her own 5 day a week show on prime time. Every time I watch these I get annoyed that there has never been a female late night talk show host. Instead they get 'The View' a bunch of chicks yelling at each other around a table.... kind of insulting to our intelligence.
A lot of cartoonists believe it was a method used to easily see hand movement and save time in drawing for cartoons at the time. It similar to why Goku super Saiyan hair was blonde because the manga artist was too lazy to color in Goku's hair in all the panels so he just left it white. If you follow the history of the cartoons Mickey was not wearing gloves in 1928 but in 1929 he starts wearing them. The ideas of the gloves do come from blackface minstrel shows but it not the reason they start using the gloves. To me, I happy that cartoons took something bad and made it good. Disney still used white gloves today because Disney took control and made white gloves represent cartoon shows not minstrel shows in today generation.
Jaison Abraham It was both from what I heard. And yeah. It just serves to show us how deeply racism is ingrained in our cultural history. If it is so omnipresent in all these utterly unexpected harmless ways then where else might it lie, especially in non harmless ways? Seemed to be the point.

Mazdak Mina How Square dancing wound up in schools was fueled by racism, however square-dancing itself is not a racist activity, and partly came out of black culture originally.
You're correct in assuming that I believed the info in this segment, and I find your point of view interesting. Care to elaborate on the "none of these instances were as pervasive.." part?
When I was in 1st grade, I lived half-time in a neighborhood with what I now know is not only the least repetitive icecream truck, but also the most progressive. It did not play the minstrel song that is usually associated with icecream trucks at all. Instead, it played a series of three songs, with the lyrics sometimes being played with the tune (they had a decent audio system), and the songs were “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”, “Do Your Ears Hang Low” (with lyrics every time), and “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”.
Before anti-SJWs start Screaming ‘anti-white racism’... They are not saying everything you like is racist. Just that a few things people may like has some racism connected to it. Square Dancing isn’t racist by itself, but the reason it became so common is. The Ice Cream Truck Song is not racism, but there is a version of it with racist lyrics. And, yes cartoons used to do black face, but that was part of a by gone area. You do not have to like black face to find old cartoons funny.
Betty Boop was based on black performer Esther Jones, also known as Baby Esther. Despite this, a white performer named Helen Kane unsuccessfully tried to sue Max Fleisher, saying that Betty was actually based on her and stole her image. In other news, King Dice from "Cuphead" is based on Cab Calloway
Don't get me wrong, it's interesting and important to learn these things. But there's a difference between something having racism play a part in its origins and something being racist today. e.g. Just because the revival of square dance was engineered with a racist motive (and it's completely legitimate to point that out), that doesn't make square dancing itself racist. Distinctions are important. It's what seperates someone making valid points from a fanatic.
Yeah, I think the approach here is all wrong. I mean, the song Turkey in the Straw has a much longer history than one guy who wrote and sang racist lyrics to it one time, were the racist lyrics the reason the song was chosen for ice cream trucks? If so, why aren't you telling us, and if not, connecting ice cream trucks and racism just seems like the wrong place to focus on
A White Supremacist liking something doesn't automatically make that thing racist. For example, the tune to Turkey in the Straw already existed before the racist lyrics were added to it. So if the tune is played without lyrics, would it be considered a necessarily racist tune?
Some of this stuff is just historic context. You could just acknowledge the song, and move on or you could change the song. To be honest, my local ice cream truck doesn't play Turkey in the Straw.
A tune can't be racist, but it can be associated with racism. If Turkey in the Straw was super popular and that's what sprang to mind when people heard ice cream trucks, that's fine. If they heard the tune and thought of the racist remake, that would not be fine. That said, since no one today recalls the racism, it's probably fine. It's interesting to find out where this stuff originated but I'm not going to be offended next time I hear an ice cream truck.
666Tomato666 also a Native American symbol for the Four Directions/Winds. During WWII the U.S. government made the Native weavers sign an agreement not to use the symbol in there weavings anymore.
I was actually just recently wondering what that famous icecream van music peice ("do your ears hang low" etc etc) was originally called and about and where it was from and now I will literally never forget. Thanks for that!
Ummm, you got one wrong. I'm an animator and a animation historian as well. White gloves were used in old black and white days because when you had a character that was all black, when the hands went in front of the body, they disappeared. To remedy that, they gave them white gloves so you could always see them and it's important to see hands because they are very expressive. How did you come to your conclusion, because I had never heard that explanation before.
Yeah, I saw that too, and that was pretty accurate. Was talking to my friend on Skype right now about this, who is an artist and animation historian as well and she clued me in on a few things, that had more to do with the designs of the characters and now yes, that is something you can point at, but not the white gloves. Character designs like Bosko and Flip the Frog were modeled after the minstrel shows, so yes they do have that.
sprybug You don't think that it might be a shared reason for the white gloves, that it came from the minstrel shows, where they used the white gloves for much of the same reason (and to avoid having to blacken the hands)?
I thought the jingle for ice cream trucks was the one, "🎼Do your balls🎶 ⚾⚽🎱 hang low? 🎙 Do they swing 🎷 to and fro?"🎹 Lol. Don't remember how the rest goes 😂
Turkey in the Straw is a folk song whose music is used in a ton of different phrasings with different lyrics since its inception. Sort of the way Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star is also the ABCs, etc. Just because it was co-opted by a racist to make it into one racist song wouldn’t make the lyric-free song inherently racist on ice cream trucks simply by association. If Bee and Co’s claim here held true, it would make Wakko Warner a racist for the way he taught me the capitals in my youth. Racism is a pretty severe charge to hurl at someone or something. Use it deliberately and responsibly.
"Just because it was co-opted by a racist to make it into one racist song wouldn’t make the lyric-free song inherently racist on ice cream trucks simply by association" That struck me as an odd claim too. Did MAD TV get any credit for this skit? ruclips.net/video/3woyR18Kb04/видео.html
The Mercator Projection isn't racist, it was just designed for navigation while sailing. It may distort surface area, but it preserves angles perfectly, which equal-area maps like the Gall-Peters (that map from West Wing no one uses) don't. Equal area maps have their uses, but the Gall-Peters projection isn't even a good example of one. It twists everything into these distorted shapes. I personally prefer the Eckert IV projection, which I think does a great job preserving relative surface area while not looking like garbage.
I cannot spend my life apologizing for the sins of my predecessors. All I can do is try to live my life right and treat EVERYONE with the same respect as I would want to receive.
This was pretty cool. I learned a lot more about little boring cultural things than I thought I would. Seeing as though a lot of it's intentional racism is lost now, has racism been infused into contemporary objects? And what do we think of objects that have lost their racist intended influence?
Wow that ice cream truck song caught me off guard. Like wow . . . Now I never want to hear that song again and I'm legit telling the ice cream man about that
Just because you know this now doesn't mean that you should change the way you live. Some things are fueled by historical racism, but you really do have to look at things under their historical context. Sure the Ice Cream Truck jingle was originally a song that is blatantly racist, but does that mean if kids are excited to hear that tune today that they are racists? No, it's used because it's honestly a cheery melody and has a connection with sugar! I think one of the most important words Samantha Bee said is "holdover". Sure things may have been built with racist intent and have somehow survived the test of time, but that's fine as long as the general accepted view of them today is not racist. American culture and history should be respected and in many cases celebrated, while still noting that unfortunately that culture and history has racism.
The tune played by ice cream trucks actually is "Turkey In The Straw" and informing people that it comes from the "giNger" anagarm, makes people think it is the same tune, and makes people think there's some kind of insane conspiracy involving ice cream men.
i would love to see this become a recurring bit. i only knew about half of what y'all talked about, and i try my best to educate myself (from "Black Identity Extremists" blogs, lol)
See. In my middle school years I remember doing line dancing in PE. Like the electric slide and the everybody clap your hands one. It was actually really fun! But I’m sure it’s related to square dancing in some way 😟
Watch Bing Crosby in Holiday Inn. Bing does a number in black face and it's not just him. It's the band, the dancers, and the wait staff. Oh and listen to how he refers to his housekeeper/cook.
My (all-white) school did have square dancing units in PE. It never occurred to me that square dancing was meant to keep us away from jazz, but that’s exactly the kind of scheme my school’s administration would have gone for. Now I live in a town that is styled, bizarrely, as “the square dance capital of the world” by the local Chamber of Commerce. The population here is about 85% Latino, and I’ve never seen anyone square dance here, or even heard anyone here talk about square dancing. People are strange.
Not that anyone cares about facts here, but the ice cream truck song is based on "Turkey in the Straw". Citing article from San Diego Reader, 9/20/1988, avaiable online: > Once upon a time, Beals Music Inc. was the only manufacturer of loudspeaker systems for ice-cream trucks. For many years, if you wanted one, you had to buy theirs ... > Turkey in the Straw" et al. are in the public domain, so Beals didn't have to pay royalties every time a truck rolled down the street.
"It's the concept of the state of Oregon!"

I get the feeling a lot of people are going to miss the point of this.
TheNobleShade - I did. Are they implying we get rid of these things because they were originally racist (even if they're not anymore)? Because that's what it sounded like...
How did it sound like that to you? Are you one of those people that thinks pointing out racism is attacking white people?

Talk about it. Also well done incorporating an antique roadshow premise.
All black school and we had square dancing in P E wow!
I'm Canadian and we had square dancing in PE too. Why?
True. Also, why not jazz?
Square dancing is a great, communal activity. It's also really popular in Japan and other countries. So, the fact that a racist guy promoted it doesn't make it a racist activity.
But why isn't Jazz seen in the same way? It's also very communal and it's also quite popular worldwide.
In fact I can't remember a class on ANY other kind of organized dance.
America was built on racism. Everything in our culture is almost guaranteed to have some racist origin or past (or present) use.

Aidan, old cartoons were in black and white before the invention of color on film. They used black ink to draw the cartoons.

That music at the end is the same music used in the Quick & Fast sketches on All Dat from the 90's.
Irony. We JUST learned about J. Marion Sims today in class. And yes, he was a sadistic monster.
One of Sams best videos. Still waiting for her to get the recognition she deserves. #TimesUp
Wow that ice cream truck song caught me off guard. Like wow . . . Now I never want to hear that song again and I'm legit telling the ice cream man about that
We had a square dancing unit in elementary PE. We also had a Tinikling unit every year.
Square dancing is my ancester's dance. It's part of my ancestry. Hello durrr moment
"No, Google it." LOL. Good tip.
Wow, the ice cream truck thing is crazy!
Who else's jaw hit the floor at the lyrics for the icecream song?
Very informative. Thanks
We love all you guys!!!!!
'ask someone black.'
'no, google it!' xD
Clearly the FF staff have been watching a lot of Vox videos.
Dude behind them looks like Steve Urkele
Ya, I remember square dancing in school. It's great to call out racist roots in things we too easily let remain acceptable!
The tune played by ice cream trucks actually is "Turkey In The Straw" and informing people that it comes from the "giNger" anagarm, makes people think it is the same tune, and makes people think there's some kind of insane conspiracy involving ice cream men.
"...I lit up with sadness" 😂😢
i would love to see this become a recurring bit. i only knew about half of what y'all talked about, and i try my best to educate myself (from "Black Identity Extremists" blogs, lol)
I always hated square dancing, but now I have an actual reason
The Ice cream cone one did surprise me. Just wow...
See. In my middle school years I remember doing line dancing in PE. Like the electric slide and the everybody clap your hands one. It was actually really fun! But I’m sure it’s related to square dancing in some way 😟
I live in Australia and WE had square dancing in PE...the reach of racist American values went very far indeed!
Now I have a legit reason to hate square dancing.
YOUR TEAM IS HELLA FUEGO
Awesome work!
You forgot to add the custom of tipping which started as a way for restaurant owners not to pay freed slaves but still employ them as waiters.
Watch Bing Crosby in Holiday Inn. Bing does a number in black face and it's not just him. It's the band, the dancers, and the wait staff.
Oh and listen to how he refers to his housekeeper/cook.
1966 Orange County, California public high school: yep, Square Dancing in P.E.! (I thought it was fun; I didn't KNOW!)
I'm still gonna use some of these things
I am horribly offended by this! NCIS is a wonderful show that should go on forever in all versions!
I always wondered why I never heard the lyrics to the ice cream song, I had assumed that it was just a jingle without any words. Now I feel sad
Not that anyone cares about facts here, but the ice cream truck song is based on "Turkey in the Straw". Citing article from San Diego Reader, 9/20/1988, avaiable online:
> Once upon a time, Beals Music Inc. was the only manufacturer of loudspeaker systems for ice-cream trucks. For many years, if you wanted one, you had to buy theirs
...
> Turkey in the Straw" et al. are in the public domain, so Beals didn't have to pay royalties every time a truck rolled down the street.
You are my hero.
The Presidents Mansion-The White House. White paper. Blackmail. Blacklisted. It's in the air with breathe.
Damnation, you trying to tell me I can no longer eat an ice cream cone?
